Also - in fairness the priest wished her well at the end of his statement.

Finland, Latvia and Italy* all choose their entries this weekend.

*Sanremo isn't the Italian selection as such, it predated Eurovision and continued when Italy wasn't going to the contest. However, the winner of Sanremo has first refusal on the ticket to Eurovision.

Awful from Finland, but in a televote only semi final it will probably qualify.

It came last with the juries in their selection tonight, mad that it won.

And here's tonight's national final performance from Finland. Again note the production values for a European country with roughly the same population as Ireland

This is sailing into the final where it'll likely get a decent televote. Lots of people unhappy this won but I think the song itself is decent enough, despite how silly the live performance is. Think top ten in the final is achievable for Finland.

I am a bit concerned that dropping juries from the SF's means we're slightly heading back to the silliness and low quality of the early 2000's, but as long as they keep juries in the final then it'll probably be grand.

    Latvia also decided tonight

Nothing to get excited about here I think. His voice is good but that's about it. Don't think we'll be seeing Latvia back in the final this year.

    No, Dadi Freyr is talented.

I fear the 2000s are calling...

Not confirmed she's going yet, but seems this will be Italy's entry

Nothing special about this at all I think, but Italy often exceed expectations.

Must have been a poor lineup if this is the best of the bunch in Italy.

That Finnish entry is a real step backwards to the shíte Eurodance of yesteryear. I wonder though if it’ll be a banger on the night. Reminds me of hearing stuff like Scooter in the mid 90s. I wasn’t the target demographic back then despite being in the general age group but it just sounded pants to me.

It wasn't a bad lineup, there were a few songs I thought were better... Mahmood's track for one, but you never know what Italy will do. 60% of the televote went to one of the worst tracks.

It wasn't the best song, but it was an awful lot better than the song that came second (and won 60% of the televote.) I'm not a fan of Mahmood, but I thought his song was very good, and probably the one that would have done best at Eurovision. But then, Sanremo is all about finding a song to win Sanremo, not a song to win Eurovision, because it's not really a national final as such.

Finland is a horror show (and not in a Lordi way.) It's exactly the kind of thing that would have done very well around 2007, but I'd hoped the contest had moved on from that. Having a 75% televote/25% jury was a disaster, and it's just not right that the song that finished last with the juries was allowed to go to the top on televotes. The fans on social media who were screaming for the abolishment of the juries after their favourite Käärijä didn't win last year are very quiet today...

Unfortunately, Finland will easily qualify with this. They'll probably then end up with zero from the juries in the grand final, and a televote score of 298 points.

Latvia might actually be very clever with their choice. It's the sort of song that juries tend to go for, and with so many songs this year clearly aimed at televoters, the small number of songs that appeal to the juries could clean up with the grand final jury votes. The task for Latvia is making the final, but if they do just enough to appeal to the semi-final televoters, then they could do well in the final, similar to Estonia last year.

How do you get to watch the SanRemo contest here? I gues a vpn but you’d maybe need the RAI app? I heard Scott Mills talking about it during the week in the context of Eurovision and that it runs for 5 nights with a run time of 5 hours each night, which sounds kind of mad.

It's not geo blocked, we used the Raiplay app and the Rai website.

We watched some live, but a lot of it was watching the performances back the next day.

Finland is cheap and trashy but fun as well. I could see it get a Croatia 2023 type result, around 10th-12th or so.

You just know this will be the clip that the British media will use to take that tired ‘Oh, those crazy Europeans!’ angle.

Rest assured it will be viewed on both ‘Gogglebox’ and ‘Have I Got News For You’.

I'd take more quirky novelty entries over wall to wall dreary ballads.

I'm ok with novelty entries as long as they're done well. Finland's entry isn't.

Scott Mills spent a bit of time talking about Finland’s entry just now but didn’t play a a clip… which says a B lot really.

Moldova choosing their song tomorrow night.

Don’t let us down, Moldova! 😄

    Germany

Germany had a shot at top ten if they chose Ryk but messed up and sent this instead. I mean there's nothing wrong with it, but it's generic, uninspired and won't escape the bottom 5. Better luck in 2025!

Busy night tomorrow with Moldova, Estonia, Denmark and Lithuania all choosing their songs.

That's a nein from me, reminds me a bit of the English lad that got 0 a few years ago.

That Ryk song is pure jury bait, couldn't see it winning but finishing mid table at worst.

Last year they had a very undeserved last place, looks like this won't do much better.

Very generic. That’ll didsappear amidst the other lineup songs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 899 ✭✭✭supereurope

Yes, it wasn't exactly a stellar lineup of songs to begin with, but they had a shot at a top 10 finish with Ryk. With so few ballads this year and plenty of eccentric entries, Ryk could have cleaned up with the jury vote in the grand final. Instead, Germany is possibly looking at a double zero. This song will get completely lost.

It's been a bad NF season for returning artists so far, with Keiino, Max Mutzke and Mélovin all denied a second shot at Eurovision. I wonder how The Roop will do tonight - I haven't heard their song but the online fandom isn't too keen on it.

EDIT: forgot that Natalia Barbu (ESC 2007) is going in tonight's Moldova selection.

Lithuanian selection is currently ongoing for anyone that wants to watch…

    Moldova

Little to get excited about here I think. Unless they do something incredible staging wise I can't see this getting a lot of traction in Malmö

    Estonia

So Estonia have gone down the weird and wacky route this year. It'll probably qualify for the final but will get decimated by juries. It does feel like getting rid of the juries from the SF's means we're seeing more of these types of entries, and I'm not sure it's a good thing to be honest 😐

I know there's a long way to go yet, but it feels like there's a real lack of quality thus far.

Of all the Lithuanian songs tonight, I really like The Roop’s song…. They had a banger in 2020 and in 2021 had a not quite as good a banger….. but still a bit of a banger..
