Tried to sign up with Yuno today but couldn't, as we have set up for storage meter which is incompatible with them apparently. Contract up today so back to the drawing board quickly I guess. Might be useful to know for anyone with the same setup however.

You got a lucky escape. Who are you with now and what unit rate and standing charge are you going to be paying from tomorrow? Have you had any offers from your provider?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,849 ✭✭✭Bawnmore

Currently with Electric Ireland. They've offered the same rate as is published on their website - 14% discount so 33.49 c/kWh up until March and 30.81 c/kWh from then onwards.

If not signing up for that (e.g. if it rolls past today without signing up) then it's back to their base rates of 38.95 c/kWh until end March and 35.83 c/kWh after.

I've done some calling around and I think I'm going to go with either:

    • Flogas who are 29.03c/kWh and €313 standing charge.
    • BGE who are 31.86c/kWh and €298.19 SC until beginning March and then 28.67c/kWh and 274.34 SC after that. This one is probably best.

I thought Flogas standing charge was lower than that?

We're rural - are you thinking of urban SC maybe?

Sorry, so many subsets. Making out a table of rates here, to make a choice for my situation. Urban, dual standing charge with a good night rate looks best. We have a small solar array and no battery, 2 EVs using about 800 units/month. Charge EVs by night, and FIT will be fairly near night rate. Have dinner cooked by 5 o'clock if we're getting really miserable. Looks the best option for us.

Just a quickie response on this - it could very simply be a case that previous bills were calculated based on meter estimates rather than actual meter readings. The large recent bill might now be a correction of several underpayments, based on a recent meter reading where the reader got access to the meter. Have a good look at the latest and previous bills, where all the relevant info would be given.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,221 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

With a properly working smart meter that shouldn't be the case, maybe the meter doesn't have a good connection to the mobile network and isn't providing figures, who knows? If the poster has a look at the bill next time they're home they might find the answer.

Just a word of warning for others. I got an email in December from Flogas telling me that my contract was up ‘in the new year’ and offering to put me on some tariff or other.

Decided to shop around and signed up for Energia on 10th January.

Turns out my expiry date was 26th and have been hit with contract cancellation penalties of €240. €150 cashback clawed back and €50 for electricity and €40 for gas.

So you didn’t check your contract end date ? Or did flo gas tell you lies ?

It was naivety on my part. I thought that penalties were for breaking contracts mid way through, and not with literally days to go. It seems a bit much for only 16 days left and when I did the switcher thing on line I had assumed it would take a week or two before everything would be in place anyway. I had always used bonkers.ie when switching previously and that allowed me to put the exact expiry date in. There might be others that would be caught like this, hence my warning post.

Never mind. I’ll cost Flogas more than that by the time I’m finished.

Did you go with the Energia ev plan? How long do you wait before the 2 to 6 cheap rate kicks in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,035 ✭✭✭Panrich

I did. Here’s more potential naivety coming now. I thought that you got that rate from day 1 or at least I never saw anything different. I have solar panels and a battery. I’ve been charging the battery up between 2 and 6 for the past week in the belief that it was at 8c 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,221 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Have you not been getting the EV rate since you switched?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,654 ✭✭✭bren2001

How will you cost Flogas anything? You broke the contract early and they’re entitled to charge you the breakage fee. It doesn’t matter if it’s one day left.

I am assuming the €150 was from a deal they offered? They’re entitled to claw it back. If it’s government energy credits, you’re entitled to keep it.

If you’re within the 14 days, you could cancel and revert to flogas and see if that would reset what you lost.

This too? If one switches to this plan, is there some kind of delay before the EV rate becomes available?

With your current meter, you can opt for a Standard 24 hour rate (assuming its unactivated which that appears to be the case), a Smart 24 hour rate or a Time of Use tariff which would be similar to D/N but with a higher unit rate between 5-7. Both "smart" plans activate the meter meaning you cannot switch back to a standard tariff.

You would need to get a different smart meter installed to get a D/N rate. It appears that no company will facilitate that.

You're not "banned" but it would be pretty difficult to switch across to a standard D/N plan.

Not quite true, Flogas requested a meter change for me it wasn't their fault esbn took 6 months to arrive with the meter.

I think so, from the traditional D/N anyway.

I'm on the old D/N and they recently replaced my old meter with a special smart meter. I'm out of contract with EI at the end of March and it will be interesting to see what happens when I go to renew!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,841 ✭✭✭Cape Clear

Sorry to hear this. It is worth noting that suppliers are contacting customers up to 6 weeks in advance of contracts expiring advising them about renewal deals etc. A lot of commentators in the media are making a lot of noise and imploring people to switch providers annually which is great in one way. What they don't appear to be telling people as loudly is that most providers will impose penalties for leaving early and will attempt to claw back welcome credit on top of breakage fees.

The wording is quite weak on the CRU website when it mentions breaking a contract.

    • if you are on a fixed-term contract, find out when the contract ends. There are no charges when switching to a new supplier. But there may be a charge if you break a fixed-term contract.

It was the old type digital meter he was going to install, I refused it as I didn't know what tariff I'd be put on with Flogas as the BWG deal was long gone at this stage. I'm still on the list to contact esbn for the meter change but I'll hold off until renewal time and see what's available.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,654 ✭✭✭bren2001

I think there is a difference. You were going from old style 24 hour meter to old style D/N meter.

The poster asking wants to go from Smart 24 hour meter to Smart D/N meter. I have not seen anyone successfully make that switch. Ultimately, I don't know tho, its a guess you wouldn't be allowed change that type.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,221 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

No I wasn't. I have an unactivated smart meter since 22 I was getting it swapped out for a D/N meter.

Hi. Currently Energia out of contract, unactivated smart meter. 5500 electric kw pa and 15500 gas. Looking for 24 hr dual.

    Energia

Electric 0.3047inc VAT, SC 236 inc VAT

Gas 0.1007 inc VAT, SC 141 inc VAT

    Bord Gais

Electric 0.3176 inc VAT, SC 237 inc VAT

Gas 0.1038 inc VAT, SC 143 inc VAT

    SSE

Electric 0.2962 inc VAT, SC 240 inc VAT

Gas 0.0916 inc VAT, SC 152 inc VAT

So SSE cheapest but not by enough to make me move. Energia offer is for a 24 hour smart which is cheaper than their standard 24 hour so surely a no brainer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 898 ✭✭✭autumnalcore

I wouldn't say it's a no brainer since there's no going back once activated and it costs nothing to move to SSE and keeps your options open should the smart rate revert to being a total ripoff as they have been.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,226 ✭✭✭BlazingSaddler

Thank you for the reply. SSE told me there 24hr rate was the same whether smart activated or not. Unsure what to do now tbh!
