I'm on the Flogas 33.38/14.75 rates and have been submitting a reading every month so far. I prefer to get more regular than larger bills.

I can hold on until mid-Feb (current tariff expires on the 17th).

I'm not mad on fixing (especially when the market is falling), but that plan is the best for us by a good margin - being rural, the standing charge is higher, and a lower SC make more of a difference than in urban areas.

Good point about the €50 exit fee - if something better comes up, it's ok to move once we'll save more than €50.

Never heard of a day/night smart meter - are we talking a different bit of hardware than a regular smart meter, or just about getting a smart meter, but going on a day/night tariff (is that possible?).

Different meter model number, a RM108

I dont know if anyone has ever moved from an non activated standard smart meter(rm107) to a RM108 though

the RM108 is the replacement for the old DayNight meters, that can measure export

It's a different meter than the other smart meter. I had one fitted last year, on same day/night plan still.

Give them a ring they'll issue a bill or at least tell you when you are due to get one. Submitting a meter reading didn't work for me, maybe it's was because I have a smart meter that is submitting readings to esbn.

I did last September, went non-activated smart meter to a "dumb" day night meter. They then put in the rm108 in November. Not sure if the rules have changed but I always thought once you weren't activated you could switch to a day night meter

It's an activated smart meter. They get the readings automatically. I already know what the bill will be, just surprised they haven't issued one yet.

Did you ring them? What smart meter plan are you on? I thought they were very expensive, nobody was going for them.

I haven't as I'm in London at the moment.

I'm on the Flogas Community fixed Plan for 1 year.

    Standing charge (rural): .9563

    Off peak day: .3033

    Peak: .3404

    Off peak night: .2087

When I signed up last summer the off peak night was 14 cents but the house had yet to be connected to the grid by ESBN. By the time it was the prices changed. I argued I should have been given the rates at time of sign-up but flogas call centre had a computer says no attitude. I didn't push it as the off peak night was still competitive versus other tariffs.

Once my PV comes online I'll do the maths and may look to break the contract and go with the Energia EV tariff.

Would you mind letting me know your setup, house size etc? I'm looking to install a possible ducted A2A system to heat a 200m2 bungalow and finding it very difficult to get any information on this.

    Thanks

The enrgia fair usage on their Ev smart plan. Is that 1000 total units per 2 months total or just in the 2-6 window?

Hi Guys, leaning into you experts on this one, Currently with Energia for dual fuel, have a smart meter installed and just got a PHEV that i want to charge over night. looking around i see prices are falling recently so any thoughts on a decent deal to hop into as i am at a change over time in any case. Thanks in advance

New Urban Fixed rates with Yuno:

Energia must be under pressure to reduce, as i think everyone else except Flogas has announced reductions in recent weeks

Why is the standing charge so much more on the D/N meter vs the 24hr meter, can anyone explain?

Is it as simple as price-balancing, making you think you're getting a better deal?

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 7,064 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

With the higher day rate, and higher standing charge, you needed to be about 60-70% night rate for it to balance out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,524 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Yep, but why is the standing charge different?

I understand urban vs rural, there are logistical considerations.

So urban 24hr vs urban D/N - why do they have different standing charges?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,488 ✭✭✭...Ghost...

The daily rate is almost the same on both tariffs though. Depending on usage, it could be a significant saving.

I used 15k units last year. 65% was night rate. I’m on Electric Ireland with a measly 10% off standard rates, so I’ll be switching soon. Think my contract expires in March.

    Stay Free

    Not really,

it depends on your overall usage and your household day/night usage mix, and the day/night prices per unit.

a difference of €65 or so, in the yuno example above on the standing charge, can be very quickly recouped.

Bear in mind also, the d/n standing charges vary from supplier, i am with Energia and the d/n standing charge is €296.40 inc vat. Some are higher, some are lower. I don’t have smart meter yet, but Energia smart meter plans are about the lowest i’ve seen for standing charges €236.62 inc vat.

in the yuno example above, 650 units with 10cent lower per unit on the night rate, and the standing charge difference is fully recouped, i used around 3,500 units on night rate last year, just under 50 % d/n mix, so difference was recouped within 2 months on average. But that assumes the correct tarriff is picked which suits your needs and d/n mix.

People with higher annual household consumption, will recoup the higher standing charge much quicker.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 7,064 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

Because ESBN charge more for DN Meters. Why? No clue. but they do, and that is just passed on.

You could also ask why the difference between urban and rural standing charges.

I should have said traditionally, it took about 60-70% to balance out, on average..

When energia's EV rate first came in, it worked out to be nearly 80% night rate was needed to be better off. As that time the Day rate was a lot higher than the 24hr rate.

Knowing your use is key, and having a car charging makes getting that balance a lot easier.

I just got my bi-monthly bill from Energia on their EV tariff,

Just over € 315 for December- January, that's all my home usage and driving 2 EVs! All covered by the government credits.

I do have a small 2kW pv system which gave about 150 units and €10 Euro credit for the FIT.

I had 1000 units @~ 8c and 150 units @~ 10c with the rest at the regular day rate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,050 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

How many units in total? Hopefully they'll drop the day unit price a bit, I'm very tempted tbh.

So I have a total usage of 1605 units , Ev rate 1178, day rate 427 with approximately another 150 provided by PV.

Hot water is from oil and diverted PV
