@Gregor Samsa I don't fully agree with you ... but no matter how you look at it Tubs has landed on his feet.

Everyone can put their conspiracy theory on his appointment to Virgin Radio in London, but even if those conspiracy theories prove to be true hasn't he landed on his feet regardless?

At the same time I have no problem being a begrudger when it comes to Tubs, or others begrudering Mr. Tubs. Only time will tell what happens. But Virgin Radio and most radio station take longer than TV to make a decision on presenters and schedules. Tubs is there for 2024 at least, unless the mid-year results are terrible.

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

Quite depressing to say Tubs is there to stay so hats off to Bobson Dugnutt and Gregor Samsa - you win!

I'm not trying to "win" anything, and the fact that you frame it in such a way speaks volumes.

I'm just trying to point out some objective facts, as it makes for better discussion. All nuance and objectivity is lost when imaginations run riot.

It's unfortunate that me doing so makes some people label me "Team Tubs" or or "Team NK" when actually I'm quite obviously a neutral observer: but that's what happens when someone comes from an extremist position: even the middle ground is so far away that it appears like the opposite extreme to them.

Virgin could be onto something offering rehab services for celebrities requiring a retreat

Fair enough Gregor - and I'd actually agree with you on being a sort of devil's advocate. Just awaiting the "success rating" by Bobson to tell us all Tubs owns several chateaus and half the Irish state as well as that being a mark of Tubs worth as a human on earth as a "man of the people" who is selfless and generous.

Currently hes listing listeners all over the world from the north pole to timbuktu. They do not count as Rajar ticks on the diary or increases in JNLR ratings for a floundering Dublin niche music station - meant to be "easy listening" with Tubs on air its about as easy as nails down a chalkboard to "listen" or rather "have foisted upon your senses".

The 50 page rule. - wow! Was he in remedial class for english or actually has reading difficulties? That may explain the Adderal references. Lord save us.

Far too early to make a judgement on Tubs success or failure outside RTE. The fact that NK landed "the Irish broadcasting legend" that little number is not as revealing as how long he will last at it, or indeed what his next gig will be after it.

I remain unconvinced that Tubs can adapt to a UK radio show and bring any sort of audience with him. If he could, he would have kept up his summer stints at the BBC. He didn't because he was found out and wasn't invited back.

Everything about this little London adventure points to temporary and an agenda to remain relevant in Ireland and to get back there ASAP. As for RTE never taking him back, I see that abit like Bertie and FF. In the right climate, at some point in the future, of course they'd take him back.

I hope he proves me wrong. For many years to come!

Well said on all points, I agree with you 100% - but his boss said and I quote: "he's such a good cook" and "he gets on with everyone"(for now!) so aren't those two important qualities for National UK radio success surely? Why are they now hiring an assistant producer to "work with the Oirish broadcasting legend Ryan Turdbuddy"?

JNLR + Rajar forecasts for his show please! WIll he be up or down?

If virgin doesn't work I'm sure radio Norwich will sell him a slot.

Tubs could get done for copyright infringement.

-Actually your friend (or client NK?) Tubs, did the Budweiser wassup the other day on the air.

Sorry for jumping in here without reading any posts but is RT airing on Q102 during the day (Via Virgin)?

If so, what happened to the presenter who actually hosting on Q102 during this timeslot?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 819 ✭✭✭alzer100

Enda, in your opinion what would be the thinking or reasoning for hiring an assistant producer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,439 ✭✭✭leath_dub

Except that they are still so valid. It's almost as if Steve Coogan stalked Tubs looking for material for his iconic character - or else people like Tubs are ten-a-penny and that it is only in RTE that someone with Tubs' talent 🙄 (and connections)!would become so revered and celebrated.

Best of luck to the chap - I'm just glad he's no longer financed by the licence fee

Well Partridge did make a TV come back of sorts on "This Time". So Tubridy's next move is surely the "One Show" on BBC. If Ronan Keating can make it there, Tubridy can.

Andy Preston has been moved from a 10am-3pm slot to a 1pm-6pm slot.

Nah they're funnier now because they are even more relevant now than they were when he was in RTÉ pulling massive wedges...

He's doing mid morning radio in the U.K., talking (repeatedly) about subject(s) that are about as interesting as a wasp sting on your nuts, making dad jokes and reading out celebrity birthdays, all while playing the likes of Ed Sheehan & Coldplay...

The comparisons with Partridge couldn't be more apt right now.

"Lol dunno why, plenty of people here." Comment from up the corridor in one of Virgin's sister stations today at the news.

One professional's theory is: "they've realised how awful he is and need more people working on the show to try and hide that"

I don't know? Maybe he needs a little help in the kitchen?

    Unreal and vomit inducing.

Like his last "link" today before 1pm and lunch - all about a new french police method of fining people for allowing dogs to litter in public. Ok content - but its the timing of it. 1pm when most of the uk and ireland breaks for lunch. 11.15 might have been a time to mention that kind of dog turd but he has no cop on or class or intelligence. No wonder BBC R2 didn't want him back, ever.

It's really difficult to see where the line between art and reality is when comparing Partridge and Tubridy.

I'll give one example on why the alan partridge references are relevant

    The par joke

Did somebody quote him saying "I had the last laugh" or similar in his Mail column?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,527 ✭✭✭tobefrank321

You forgot the constant name-dropping, licking up to people in authority, being authors of numerous books to keep themselves relevant. One of Partridges was pulped, I forget the reason why. One of Tubridy's by his own admission sold minimal copies, probably a lot of copies were also pulped. One lived for a time in a travel lodge, the other in a 1 bed apartment. Out-sized egos, etc I could go on.

Not exactly the same, but in many ways very similar. Although Partridge is a far more interesting and funny character of course, and easier to sympathize with.

    How is this show going?

I havent listened in. I do no care much for the Toyman.

Is it a magazine show, like his RTE one. Or is he just pushing the play button on the MP3 player.

Is he still refering to himself as the Toyman?

How about name dropping his cousins hotel in Connemara?

Still treating pulpy murder mysteries at high brow liteary ficton?

What about his friendship with Megan Markle?

If the same Tubs/NK fans complain each time Alan Partridge is referenced following Ryan's ignominious downfall from late night chat show presenter to mid-morning radio presenter at non-national station, then its as good a sign as any that the comparisons are apt. In fact, its likely they were not appropriate 10 years ago.

Amazing to think that Noel Kelly actually has fans. It’s like being a fan of Ryanair or the private company who run NCT centres.

Ryan more or less backed up the partridge comparison when interviewing Coogan

Tubridy is a fan of Dettol I believe.

It's a no nonsense disinfectant that gets the job done. Dettol
