That's Yuno, Airtricty and electric Ireland who've cut prices around/since Christmas.

Hopefully Flo Gas, Bord Gais and Energia follow suit quickly now.

This is why I won't be locking in to any fixed rate.

I don't see flogas making any big announcements, they've been creeping down their fixed rate (nearly as low as the 14.75c night rate of the community offer.

With the reduction from EI, what would it bring the rates to?

30.81c (inc VAT) and inclusive of the standard 14% discount.

Just taking the current price of 33.49c and multiplying it by 0.92.

Its corporate chess. They are not obliged to reduce rates, but they likely will in their own time.

Wow... full scale energy price war reported by the independent this morning

Electric ireland dropping rates by 3c/unit

    They are killing themselves 🙄

Govt need to push those 1.1m households to switch! Prices are still too high. Mary Harney was right 20 years ago: consumers only have themselves to blame for not "shopping around". Harney called on consumers to "take an active role" claiming many were "insensitive to the prices being charged".

The problem is electric Ireland are an arm of the government.

What clown created all these middlemen electricity companies with call centres, advertising campaigns, corporate boxes in Croke park etc.

All any of them have achieved is an extra 5 or 10c on every unit of electricity.

Electric Ireland announced a 10% price cut in November and an 8% price cut from March. In 4 months, prices have fallen by 17.2%. What exactly are you expecting here? Gas is still really expensive.

I changed to Yuno on the 5th Jan. My smart meter was installed on the 14th Dec . I contacted Yuno this morning by chat as my usage was still not appearing on their app. Consequently I found as a result

Below are quotes from the chat

" it looks like you have a day/night smart meter, currently configured to work like a standard day/night meter. It's configured that way to keep you on standard day/night rates, but of course has the side effect of that daily usage data not being visible.

"because there's currently no "smart" day/night configuration available from the ESB. The only configurations that provide us with that data are day/night/peak and 24-hour setups."

"However, we expect a day/night smart configuration to launch at some point during this year."

I am a bit disappointed this was not fully explained to me at time of signing up. Basically app is no good to me. Im still within cooling off period. Yuno prices are still better than SSE & Electric Ireland including their price drops but it is fixed. Not sure what I will do?

Parity with the rest of Europe would be great

My beef is more with the media & the dramatic headlines "price war"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,986 ✭✭✭bren2001

We have no interconnector with that grid. We cannot buy electricity from that grid. We are decoupled from that grid. We are a small island off the coast of Europe. Generating electricity here is going to be more expensive.

~17% in 4 months is pretty massive whether you term it a price war or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭waterwelly

Why would electricity be more expensive?

We are interconnected to the gas grid, so gas input prices should be same.

We also a lot of wind generation, often supplying a lot of the country.

Interesting that when prices come down they put the % reduction in unit rates

But on the rise it's % rise in the EAB.

Or is there a change in policy?

    Still only 16.22 night rate.

That's a pretty fair summary of things. My beef would be how long it took prices to start falling.

As regards a price war. I don't think we've ever had an aggressive enough one in the energy industry to make a difference.

I'd also wonder how many of the 1.1M EI customers have ever changed providers.

have you a link to their day/night rate plan by any chance - no mention of it in their online price plan pages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,986 ✭✭✭bren2001

Electricity works off marginal pricing. We cannot buy electricity from the grid. Our grid is decoupled from the European grid. We cannot benefit from Frances very cheap nuclear energy for example.

Why are EI deemed uncompetitive? From 1st Feb SSE is 29.61c (including 20% discount) per unit for electricity. EI's rate will be 30.83 (including 14% discount available to new and existing customers who renew their contract) from 1st March. Is that not competitive or am I missing something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 412 ✭✭Reversal

Any thing I should be aware of switching to SSE? I'm coming out of contract with EI. It seems that even with the announced price cuts, I'll be nearly 100 euro better off switching.

I saw some reference on this thread to SSE being sneaky with their standing charge, and it being very high. When I look on bonkers they seems to have lowest standing charge of €231 for a standard urban 24 hour meter.

    Many thanks,

Their non-24 hr rate for D/N or smart meters doesn’t compare favourably with Energia, SSE or Yuno

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,880 ✭✭✭✭zell12

Because EI have ~50% of the electricity market

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,986 ✭✭✭bren2001

Awful customer service imo and very strict about charging the exit fee (most are). If they're cheapest, I'd go with them. I assume you're opting for the 20% deal as they can claw back the welcome credit if you break contract early. I've heard it happening to some but not others.

Am I right in saying that of the main providers, BGE is currently the best variable value on electricity with the 22% discount?

    31.86 p for 24 hour rural with a 298e standing charge..

Nice one. Are these rates on their website yet or are you applying a discount that's been announced in the media but not on their website yet?

I was on the BWG smart plan with FloGas and I notice that their new smart rates are cheaper along with a much lower standing charge, I contacted them this morning and they have moved me to the new fixed plan with a new contract without and exit charge. They did mention that if rates drop further I may have to pay a €50 exit fee to avail of those. The way I see it is I would have to be paying that anyway if I was to move to another provider.

    My previous rates were

    Day: 33.73

    Peak: 38.15

    Night: 23.1

    SC: €302

    New rates are

    Day: 29.27

    Peak:34.62

    Night:22.82

    SC: €237.22

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,986 ✭✭✭bren2001

Applying the announcement in the media, new rate is 29.6c for 24hr meter (I think). Theres a 12.8% reduction on February 1st.

Of course, BGE could drop their rates too and I would expect them too but who knows when?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,570 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

I'm strongly considering that plan, I'm already on the BWG 24hr 30c rate I'm just uneasy about activating the smart meter, as everyone here knows once it's done it's done.. I think I'll brazen it out until April and see what's available then. Another contender are South east energy brokers, they're 20.04c plus vat on their 24hr plan with 237 standing charge, it's 60c per day plus Vat. They don't do smart plans, they're a similar outfit to waterpower.

20.04 is great. Is it a variable rate? Are there any risks associated with using these brokers over the main providers?
