    Which is the worse outcome?

Trump being president, or Trump getting a pardon in some of the cases which it's possible to get pardoned for?

Even Trump losing in the presidential election and screaming about it for another however many years would be bad and would be a close call as to if giving it pardon to shut him up would be better.

Trump should be held liable for the crimes he has committed, and if he is not, then it normalises that behaviour and that cannot be allowed to happen if the US is to remain a functional democracy.

The point about Haley winning is that it's not that much better of an outcome. Trump would be allowed to remain in public life and exert an undue amount of influence on US politics.

Trump running and losing would be the best outcome put of the choices as it would present the best opportunity to make him pay. He would rant and rave about that - probably to a new level, but that would have to be faced down. Sometimes bullies need to get their nose broken.

Trumps influence on the results of US politicians, their policies, not who they are, is minimal. He really couldn't care less about policy unless it benefits him - keeps him out of jail or lines his pockets.

He's denuded the GOP of any able people and they get nothing done. Him losing is an absolute must, he'll be even more uncontrolled if he wins, will tank the economy and foreign relations yet again and rape the treasury for his own and his crony's benefits. Imagine him as POTUS and Thomas and Alito retiring? Kari Lake on the SCOTUS? Andy Biggs?

Oh, and Covid hasn't gone away in the US. I read 1000+ week dying from it. Not enough vaccines getting into arms.

He can't hold office again, this would be a direct threat to all of us - imagine if he decides to lower the corporate income tax to keep $$ at home. Good by, Irish economy.

Haley's not proven to be insane yet. De Santis is probably gone by the middle of February.

This is why I would want him to stand rather than being taken off the ballot in a bunch of states. His toxicity to swing voters is of huge benefit to Biden.

That's the thing though, for all of the charges against him he has not once said "I didn't do it".

His entire defence is that he has "absolute immunity" or " if the president dors it, it's not illegal"

When both of those utterly stupid arguments are rejected it's game over as he has already confessed to everything.

Been a lot of cases in my social circle, and it has clearly not gone away. It's kinda weird how much the disease has persisted but the world almost willingly ignores this. I worry there'll be another mutation and we'll be right back to 2020 cos people decided it was "over".

He has never denied it, it's simply been that the "article 2" argument is used, or else it's a "who cares it's just documents" argument.

I agree with all views about Trump as a criminal, a danger, a total monster. But don't forget that for some strange reason, so many people in places like Iowa appear to think otherwise:

Of course if Trump wins in Iowa he will then be able to say 'we were winning, then it was all stolen from us' when he loses in any other states. If he loses then of course the whole thing is rigged before they start.

Watching politics in any other country is now so boring in comparison that no-one wants a solution in the US, there will be no entertainment value in that.

US politics is the best, most unbelievable soap opera around.

I read a piece somewhere the other day about how traditional evangelical leaders are losing their influence on their followers, because a lot of them now see Donald Trump as being their saviour. I don't know if there's any hope for these people at all.

If you put anyone half decent up against Trump in November then they win in a landslide. The fact he's doing so well in the polls speak to just how weak Biden is and deluded America has become on the whole.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,633 ✭✭✭✭Water John

You'd want to furnish some evidence for that. We've looked at possible options before. I haven't read Bernie Sanders take on it, yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 219 ✭✭Carlito Brigantes Tale

Evidence? How about Trump ahead in the polls, a convicted rapist and con man. If you are losing to that guy then there is a problem.

The warning signs are everywhere. Biden is a disaster and it's no good the democrats complaining when Biden loses in November they need to move him on now..

Clinton lead every single poll of note til election day; IIRC Romney lead many polls v. Obama and in the end the latter walked it.

Polls are inconsistent at best when it comes to US elections IMO, and would ascribe Trumps support more in tune with broad dissatisfaction with Biden while nothing's on the line.

A couple of years ago I was quite happy to see Trump running again as I figured he couldn't win and that would be the end of him on the big stage. Looks like I was off with that opinion .I also thought Joe might not run again letting a younger candidate go for it .Joe looks and sounds old and with his vice president having no traction at all Trump most definitely has a big chance of getting back in .I cannot understand why so many folk swallow every word Trump utters its crazy and would be funny if it wasn't so serious .

So, Biden again then? to repeat the previous landslide win?

Yes, a big problem - that you have at least half of America trusting anonymous, unvetted online sources living on Twitter, Telegram, Facebook, etc., enthusiastically swallowing bizarre disinformation they pump out like QAnon and everything which has spewed out of that like a big pressurised shít hose. Mass insanity. Evangelism, try-hard patriotism and the enshrinement of individuality, has ironically led to the MAGA faction putting Trump before God, celebrating an attack on the Capitol to stop the certification of an election that had no credible evidence of its fixing, and being easily led by a bunch of online trolls manipulating their prejudices.

Sky News live streaming his "speech" (toddler tantrum) from Iowa. Giving this oxygen thief air-time is exactly what him and his cultist want.

Current polling carries a large slice of "I'm not happy with the Government" .

In 6 months time when it's a simple binary choice of Biden ,who represents bland vanilla leadership vs. the horror show that would be a Trump presidency, I think you'll see quite different polling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,476 ✭✭✭PropJoe10

I think the main thing is that nothing Trump has done in the past two years (bitch, whine and be indicted countless times) is going to do anything to convince the swing voter, when it comes down to it. The Democrats really need to ramp up their campaign, though. And hammer Trump on his lack of accomplishments when he was in office, as well as his legal issues. I'm not too concerned by the polling at the moment in terms of the general election, outside of wondering how the hell anyone in their right mind would want another 4 years of the dumpster fire that is Donald Trump.

I heard some voter from Iowa earlier, saying how they liked Trump because he's a self-deprecating man of the people. I just cannot comprehend that sort of stupidity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 30,608 ✭✭✭✭looksee

Why would 6 months time reveal the horror show when its perfectly visible now and the followers don't care, even support it?

By that logic of course, Biden could empty an AK47 into Trump for reasons of his own amusement, and claim "absolute immunity" or "if the President does it, its not illegal"

    Absolute clowns the MAGA cult

So have ye heard of PROJECT 2025? ( I actually think it merits its own thread perhaps? )

Project 2025 is a plan to reshape the executive branch of the U.S. federal government in the event of a Republican victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Established in 2022, the project seeks to recruit tens of thousands of conservatives to Washington, D.C., to replace existing federal civil service workers it characterizes as the "deep state", to further the objectives of the next Republican president.

Project 2025: A Threat to Global Democracies (europeaninterest.eu)

With likes of this plan, whatever is left of it, surely this is US democracy dead and buried?
