    Kilkenny county final, O Loughlins 0 - 20 v 0-19 Ballyhale Shamrocks

    Leinster final, O Loughlins 0-22 v 1-18 Na Fianna

All Ire semi final, O Loughlins 1-17 v 1-16 Cushendall

Bit of a patern developing with the Kilkenny men keeping their heads coming down the stretch. Cool cats the kings of the one point win.

Hope they go on and win it out, they're some battlers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,994 ✭✭✭robbiezero

I guess the foundation of their wins are a really strong defence. I dont think they have the same scoring power as the likes of Ballyhale so probably wont score as much but also dont concede that much, so I guess a lot of their games are going down the the wire.

I see bookies have St Thomas slight favs. Should be a cracking final. Very hard to call.

They are, but St Thomas showed no shortage of that either last night. Great final in store.

I have always thought this about BG. This isn't the 1st time they have come acropper. They have 1 AI in the last 5 or 6 years and I believe it's due to their overuse of the short ball. Particularly on a day like Saturday against a team playing on the edge and getting away with it. Let's see if the final ref is as lenient. I hope so for Thomas's sake.

Like anything thrown at the GAA(like the mistake of switching 21s and u18) they probably wint bring it to the floor.

No doubt the Kilkenny lads will be falling to the ground at every opportunity…….

The ref for the final will be given the Boards.ie GAA Rulebooks. Two versions, Lenient or Hard. He will consult with the players which "option" to use. The players are always giving the ref "options".

Lenient. Soft / Borderline/ Just About frees will not be frees. Slightly High tackles, Playing on the Edge, and Lads Falling Down, no frees. Hard. They will all be frees.

The ref will check with HQ which team they want to win. And whether to make it a draw game with extra time.

Would it not be better to have Golden Score to decide it?

Pass a motion that if a game is level at the end of additional time of extra time, the ball has to go out of play over an end line for the the game to finish. If the teams are level, the referee blows his whistle and indicates with arm movement that the resulting puc-out/kick-out starts a period of Golden Score, whereby the next score wins the match.

Game finishes on the field, each team has an equal opportunity to win the game, no penalties, it's won in the contest.

And just in case, after 10 minutes of a Golden Score period, if there's no score, then you go to penalties.

Way too easy to score in hurling for next score. First to 5 or something like that would work though.

Maybe next score in football, first to three in hurling, given the difference in scoring potential?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,541 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Football would go on forever waiting for 1 score these days 🤣

Just stick with the penalties. It's the simplest way and it's the least likely to be affected by weather. It also gives each team an opportunity to affect the result of each penalty compared to a 45 or 65 competition. There's nothing wrong with using ideas from other sports.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 24,408 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Referees are in control of penalty competitions, and there should be no scope for them to get abuse about the results. They would be abused whenever a game would be settled by a "golden" point. I can't see them agreeing to that system. Probably not the majority of players either, via the GPA.

Why would 65s be better than penalties? Seems like the same thing but much, much more boring

As good an idea on offer as any I suppose.

I have to say, I love the drama of penos. I think it adds to the game. Like, is there any good way to lose? I think there's a lot of skill and a temperament test to penos too.

That said, I'm not training all year. I do think the club players should vote on it. I'll be interested to know if there's any desire to change at congress.

Penalties are a fair enough way to decide games if replays are off the table, i know its a tough way to lose but a bad wide at the death like Cushendall on Sunday for example is just as heartbreaking.

The Toomevara motion does not offer any alternative, just do away with penalties, and let someone else work out what happens next. Hanley thinks that the scoring of points or goals should decide games, but the club did not put that in the motion.

"The motion reads as follows, “That the GAA should discontinue the rule that presently exists whereby the result is decided in a penalty shootout if both teams are on level terms after extra time has been played. Relevant rules to be amended as required.

Speaking on behalf of the motion, Toomevara GAA Secretary Patsy Hanley highlighted that penalties were an “unfair” way to decide games and stated that it would be fairer and more in the spirit of fairness for the game to be decided by “the scoring of points or goals.”

I think penalties are fine when we have tight timelines and need to finish on the day. The likes of last weekend could easily have had a replay this coming weekend.

Id like to see different players for sudden death is only change id make.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,448 ✭✭✭✭Realt Dearg Sec

No solutions as usual then, just cribbing and sh1tetalk. Why are penalties unfair? Both teams have the same opportunity, it seems as fair as any other method anyone can come up with other than going back to replays, which is basically not an option, or at least shouldn't be one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,309 ✭✭✭evolvingtipperary101

They've a lot of work to do so. Doesn't sound ready at all.

Have one big ruck where the ball is tossed in by the reff between the 30 players, the first team to get possession of the ball into their hand wins. Fairest option I think, all teams well versed in it as it is one of the most common sights in the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 42,506 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Would a golden score thing work if it remains level after ET (throw in the ball and first time score wins)

Mind you it would be as tense as ****

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,514 ✭✭✭Billy Ocean

If there's a strong wind I think it would be deeply unfair.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,316 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

No. Who gets the wind - that’s too big an advantage

Also with the amount of frees these days it would be too easy to score for a nothing foul

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,399 ✭✭✭FullBack Jam

Just imagine how defensive it would be if playing on a golden score basis. It's bad enough as it is. But the golden score period could go on forever, as neither team will take any chances of losing possession of the ball. Just playing it around hoping to tire the opposition out to lose concentration.

I think a shot clock (like in basketball) could be the answer to that 'keep ball' problem. 1/2 minute limit? Have a separate ref for it in the stands.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I think Glen will have too much for Crokes this weekend. No additional motivation needed in an All-Ireland semi final but they underperformed against Crokes in the final last year and will want right that this time round. Match being in Ulster Im sure will help too.
