There are definitely similarities there in how we look to attack outside the 15's. I'd say the main difference is that we are using a lot more inside tip on passes when we go to our forward pods. That's leading to opposition defence's tightening up in midfield and giving us more space out wide. Under Penney we seemed to go from touchline to touchline without committing defenders in the same way. Saying that I do think Penney was shipped on too early and it's difficult to judge how effective he might have been when he wasn't given enough time to fully implement his gameplan.

Admitted I've only seen him play for Munster. But so far the only thing missing is size. He'd be a world class 12 if he had any kind of direct ball carrying threat. But every other facet of his game is very impressive. I wonder if the Ahern move to 6 was partially motivated by the midfield now (Nank and Frisch) not really having much punch.

Watched that game back and (like every Munster game I’ve watched recently) came away very impressed by Jack Crowley again.

The thoughts of him starting in Marseille in Feb would have been scary a while ago, but he increasingly looks ready for it.

I absolutely love the look of Ahern at 6. Freakish athlete, who’s going to be so difficult to stop in those wide channels. If he stays healthy the sky is the limit for him.

From an Irish team perspective, it’s great to see these young lads coming through and shining.

Penney left after being offered a contract extension

He had one poor kick to touch into their 22 that was missed (but worked out alright because the winger's chase was good and we got possession back between 22 and 10m... but what I like about him is he doesn't seem phased if he makes a mistake. I've yet to see a game where he goes into his shell or seems rattled.

His passing is a joy, he has a lovely ability to take it to the line, keep the defence honest with his footwork and pass very close to contact.

Aherne has been injured on and off, now he's getting a run he's showing what the promise was about. I wasn't expecting the move to 6 but one of him and Edogbo (who looks to the manor born also) are going to miss out completely if Beirne/Kleyn are both fit... this is a workaround while POM/JOD are injured that appears to be really paying dividends, he's looked at home at 6 but it's still early days. If he keeps this up I'd be keeping him at 6 or on the bench ahead of JOD. POM still starts every day of the week but Aherne coming on would give more impact than JOD you'd think.

It's been a long time since I posted on the Munster thread. But I must say Casey and Crowley were amazing last night. I wouldn't have been a huge fan of Casey but his distribution was a joy to watch and Crowley's kicking was bang on.

Of course Beirne is ridiculously good, but Munster for the first time in an awful long time look like they really have a team that can go major damage. And I am delighted for Munster on that basis. Carbury just didn't work. But Crowley is amazing.

So go you Munster and your Munster fans. You deserve this

Ahern at blindside is paying dividends. Scary pack with him there.

Loughman to me is playing quite well. He's become a late bloomer

It's mentioned in the Indo, the bastion of truth.

RG to Bath was mentioned in L'Equipe as well. Wouldn't be surprised to see Knox go, he hasn't had a look in at all in the last two years.

Is Knox always injured or just no use? I've literally never seen him and the competition at TH are hardly world beaters.

Neither. He isn't always injured. Has been playing regularly with cookies

    Cookies?

Seems to play slightly more minutes than Snyman but I've genuinely never seen the chap even though he started against Leinster last year apparently.

I generally check AIL teamsheets every week after results and yea he’s been playing for young munster pretty much all year including yesterday.

Young munster. One of their nicknames is cookies.

As a Leinster fan, I have to give credit to Rowntree. This Munster side is unrecognizable from the dross served up by VG. The youth movement is really stepping up and its hard not to see a couple of them getting international call ups.

RG Snyman was at the junior supporters Christmas party yesterday. I thought he looked in good health although I do accept there's a difference in physicality between signing autographs for kids and playing professional rugby

He might make an early return

I'm inclined to think that Penney just came too soon for Munster. There had been too many wins in recent memory playing "the Munster way", and it prevented guys from fully buying in.

The other example would be Pat Lam at Connacht. He came in with an idea that might have looked like "width for widths sake", but because there wasn't much in terms of historical success, they had an easier time letting go of their current philosophy and adapting to it.

For Munster it took a real drought before it was accepted that they'd have to adapt, and then it took time to actually make that change happen.

When you apply all the context, (and perhaps a tiny bit of hindsight!) it's 100% the correct decision for Ahern to get gametime at 6 right now.

It's too simplistic to say "he's 6"9, he should be a lock". Not all locks are created equal. He does not have the anatomy of a Henderson, a McCarthy, a Kleyn, etc.

He has an anatomy much closer to an Itoje or a Lawes. Rangy, mobile, lighter on their feet. Add that to the extremely rare combination of his size and the skills he has, coming fist from a GAA background, and then mostly playing fullback in schools rugby.

Also, in recent years, any time a promising lock comes through, my first instinct is "don't do to this guy what Schmidt did to James Ryan", i.e., flogging a young man still developing physically to pieces in the tight, and all the injuries and issues that led to. I share that concern with Edogo, tbf, and with Joe McCarthy.

Agreed about Ryan. He was flogged. In the case of Ahern, a fantastic athlete and he affects the l/o. On top of that, Ahern has the hands of a backline player.

Jean Kleyn will be unavailable until the New Year due to an eye injury suffered in the Leinster match. He attended for a specialist review last Tuesday and Wednesday and will have further follow-up before Christmas.

Jack Daly (ankle) and Liam Coombes (shoulder) both underwent surgery last week and will begin rehabilitation under the medical department. There is good news for Patrick Campbell (ankle) as he has returned to team training.

Jack O’Donoghue (ankle) will also return to training this week.

Simon Zebo (knee) will continue to rehabilitate early this week.

The availability of Campbell, O’Donoghue and Zebo will be determined later in the week.

Peter O’Mahony (shoulder) is improving but will remain unavailable for the Bayonne clash.

Continuing to rehab: Jack Daly (ankle), Peter O’Mahony (shoulder), Liam Coombes (shoulder), RG Snyman (chest/shoulder), Joey Carbery (wrist), Roman Salanoa (knee), Mike Haley (hip), Cian Hurley (ankle/achilles), Niall Scannell (groin).

Even Henderson himself, a heavier set lock, has had plenty of time at 6 in his career. When you add Ahern's agility and pace and ability to make a break to the picture, in retrospect it makes an awful lot of sense tbh.

Argh. Terrible for Kleyn, hope it's not serious.

In the space of about a month we've gone from joking about needing to go 7-1 to potentially benching Wycherley in a 5-3.

Kleyn's absence will be a big loss for the European matches and Leinster, obviously especially in light of our maul d at the moment.

It's an area JOD is particularly strong in so I wouldn't be hugely surprised to see him involved if he's back (maybe ahead of guys he might otherwise be behind). Doubly so with POM missing too.
