'You're Grand'?

Jesus christ, dude, have you *ever* had a social interaction you didn't forensically interrogate to death (and still manage to come away from with the entirely wrong conclusion)???

I've read your message and still don't fully understand the point or issue but I'd say have a grand day.

You're completely wrong and it sounds like you've maybe only just paid attention to the use of a phrase now and it's sticking out in your head.

I've been saying 'you're grand' for a lot longer than 20 years and have been hearing people saying it for just as long.

It can signify a bit of annoyance. Someone could be fussing over giving something back to you and you could say something like the following in a half annoyed way:

'ah would you ever stop, you're grand'

I tend to use it in such a way. Or if I'm in a bit of a rush and someone is fussing over something that seems trivial.

'you're grand, it doesn't matter, we have to go'

I think the OP is on to something. And I suspect that George Soros is behind it all. It sounds like one of his gigs.

It's an interesting question and we're all glad you have brought it up. However the interaction you use as an example is difficult to visualise. Tell the story again but give us all the necessary details.

How far apart were you standing? Describe the body language of both parties in detail. Were there any micro-expressions? What were you both doing with your hands before, during and after the interaction? What were you wearing? Specifically, give details about the number and location of any pockets on your clothes. Which of you was wearing brighter colours? Who is taller, and by how much?

What is the nature of your relationship to this person? Who had the upper hand in the circumstances in which the interaction took place? Is the other person your social equal? If not, describe in minute detail the factors that give rise to the perceived inequality. Which of you is better looking? Wealthier? More successful with sexual partners?

What exactly was the setting for this interaction? Indoors or outdoors? What sort of building? Where precisely in or outside the building were you? Were you entering or leaving and at what sort of pace? What time of day was it? When had you last eaten? Were you in natural light or artificial light?

I'm fascinated that you have the perspicacity to distinguish between "you're grand" and "it's grand" and to question its real meaning in human interaction. You must be a very perceptive and sensitive person. Unfortunately, without knowing absolutely everything about the circumstances of the repayment of the tenner it's impossible to offer any real insight. Please, let us know what really happened.
