window regulator gone bang

quite literally, just as the window finished winding down, there was a loud bang. i thought at first it might have been the window itself breaking, but it did come back up, but very grindy sounding and came up unevenly, so i guess that was a cable snapping i heard?

assuming it is, anyone know what a rough ballpark would be for replacement - 2012 octavia, front passenger side.

i rang my usual guy but he outsources these jobs to a lad who is on honeymoon at the moment; and mentioned that he thinks rivets may need to be drilled out so it's not a quick swap out.

That’s def the window regulator.

the reg is on a plate which is riveted to the door. Yeah, it’s a bit of drilling, maybe 8 rivets, but it’s not hugely more work than a newer model where it’s bolted in. They often come with the plate already attached so it’s easier in some ways.

you’d get the reg for under €70 in a lot of motor factors, even less online. and maybe an 40 mins for a mechanic to fit.

I fitted one myself on my last car, it wasn't that hard. Got it from a scapyard for €50. Remove the door card and unscrew the old one, it was a bit tricky to take the old one out through the existing holes but not too bad. All in all took about a hour. Just make sure you secure the window when you remove the old one as if it drops it will shatter. I stuck it up with duct tape.
