Does a head unit store your data?

My phone died so I took an old phone I have that belonged to a deceased relative.i plugged it into my car, set up android auto and launched Spotify. It started on the last podcast I had been listening to on the dead phone. I checked Recently Played and it had the last three podcasts I listened to. Just three. How did it know this?

Spotify or android auto had never been launched on this phone. The google account on the phone is the relatives. Looks like it wasn't phone settings.

It's Spotify premium.

The Spotify app in the head unit remembers the last thing it was playing.

No, I think your head unit connects to Spotify using details it gets from your phone, then your phone is then no better than a hotspot and remote control.

There's no Spotify app in the head unit, they're using Android Auto.

Did you sign in to the "new" phone using Google credentials at all?

Open Spotify on the phone and see what account is signed in there and also check the recently played etc. Android Auto is just a front onto your phone.

I checked Spotify on the phone and I'm logged in . Don't remember doing that. Must be getting doddery in my old age.
