Attic Header Tanks - Relocating /Renewing

I want to move the attic header tanks from their current location which is bang in the middle of the attic to a location less central within the attic as I wish to floor out and insulate the attic, the existing tanks are 25 plus years old, they look to be in good condition, would anyone have any idea as to how much a plumber might charge for such a job? Also would it be best to replace the existing tanks with new ones or just drain and re-use the existing ones........?

After 25 years and of moving them, I would suggest replace them also.

Hard to know the work effort involved without seeing it, but between pipes, fittings new tank and labour you wouldn’t see €1000

5 bed house with 6 people what size would you suggest is needed, not 100% sure of the existing ones dimensions but know for sure that the same size ones will not fit through the access hatch as its only 580mm wide.........?

One last question, is there a singular tank that could be used with the same capacity as the 'Double' you suggest.............i.e one with a 450 litre capacity or are the dimensions of 'singular' large ones not suitable for a hatch opening of 0.58m x 1.2m?

I’ve looked at a few vids about replacing the attic tank, I’d be fairly handy at plumbing so am considering doing the tank replacement as a diy project. Am I mad…..?

It’s doable but be very careful with your connections.

interlink tanks is common practice.

coffin tanks are handy for pushing in the eves of a roof.2x70s would be my choice.

is it just the cold water tank your moving or both cold water & header tank ?

No header tank being moved also……when you say 2 x 70’s what capacity litre wise are you talking……

I grew up being a ‘go for’ for a plumber during my teens and was very interested and still an in the ‘trade’ and have a lot of plumbing tools/materials…..local plumbing supplier I’m sure would advise me on what to install also. From memory it can be a bit tricky to get the seals correct on the fittings for the feeds leaving the tank ie those supplying the cold water to taps showers etc….am I over simplifying things/missing something…?

240 gallons in each.

will cover most fairly big sized houses.

re seals,I’d go with PTFE ring on the inside & tec 7 on the outside.clean cut using fresh hole saw bits.

2 x 240 gallons = almost 1100 liters or a metric tonne in weight/mass.........is this correct or do you mean 2 x 240 litres.......?

If gallons I better make sure I spread the load well and have a good quality wooden base for this kind of weight

Do modern plumbers still us 'Boss White' on compression fittings?

you would indeed need a good solid base evenly spread over the entire base of the tanks.

Two tanks would cover everything

hope to start on this job this weekend……once moved it will allow attic to be Floored / converted for storage and maybe some down the line a play room
