Hi everyone, I'm trying to help a friend figure out her entitlements and a bit of information as we're not really sure having read through the online information.

She has been out of employment for personal reasons for a year but over the the past while has began looking for work to no avail. Throughout this time she lived off savings paying her own way but given that they are now she was made aware of eligibility for welfare support as she is seeking a job, especially that she has been in full time employment between 2016-2022.

Could someone please advise what eligibility there is for Jobseekers Allowance/Benefit and how to go about this in the right way? Furthermore is there scope for backdating the payment up to the point she began looking for work?

Thank you very much for the help!

Unfortunately the first error was your friend not signing on immediately, they've essentially lost out on contributions and will need to explain how they've survived.

I'd advise they apply for JSB as they appear to have enough contributions (applicable year is 2021) this payment is not means tested and might avoid questions about what they've been doing for 12 months

There is Zero chance of anything being Backdated. Payment will only be back dated from date of application.

    Applying.

I'm assuming your friend may not have a PSC or mywelfare account so they'll need to apply at a local Intero centre, bring ID, POA, bank statements etc. An appointment will be made to get a PSC which is needed to collect payment at local post office.

Apply ASAP as its nearing Christmas, a very busy period.

Hi thanks for your response it's very helpful.

Yes she was happy to support herself from savings for the time as was going through a tough time and not actively looking for work. Fairly noble I must say considering many people would be quick to claim but that's another matter.

She does have an account but thinks the car is expired if she can find it that is. Would it be possible to put claim in online? Or would you say best to go in in person. Hopefully will get something sorted as it's only fair to get something back when in need and actively applying for jobs after not having tried to game system.

If her PSC may be expired, I don't think so. She could try but she'll need a PSC regardless to collect payment if approved.

If she has a verified Mygovid account she could reniew the PSC online but if not she'll need a face to face appointment to renew it.

No harm trying to apply for JSB and see if they accept the application but if she can't, she'll need to go to her local Intero center to apply and renew her PSC

There are Two Distinct Onlne Accounts

Basic Mywelfare which allows for applications & Managing Claims.

Verified Mygovid Account which allows greater functionality, renewal of PSC, Drivers licence, Revenue etc.
