After doing my Medical and Line Manager interview in June, I just got an email from Irish Rail telling me I was deemed medically unfit for the role.

I do have a history of some medical issues, and I had to send in some notes/reports from my GP to the Occupational Health team. They've been silent until this email. Nonetheless, the email from Recruitment just says medical info is confidential and they only received a note that I was unfit from the Medical.

I might call the Occupational Health unit and ask can I get a reason why I was deemed unfit. But yeah, I'm gutted after waiting so long and getting so far to be told this.

That's poor form. Sorry to hear that, I hope you can get some answers from the Occupational health team. Did they say anything to you about applying again or did they just close the door on you over the medical issue?

Thanks buddy, yeah poor form to leave me so long for an answer like this. The email doesn't really say I can't apply again, just thanks for applying and best of luck in the future.

I did call the CIE Medical Department, I was asked to send an email in to them and they'll get back on Monday or Tuesday. I hope they reply telling me it's something I can change, as I would like to try applying again.

What kind of issues? I totally understand if you don't want to elaborate.

Does anyone know why they are looking for so many station operatives. Apparently around 50 and mostly around Dublin. Is there a lot of retirements coming down the line or are they looking at staffing various staitons more often than currently.

I have sleep apnea, but I use a CPAP machine and it treats it without any issue. I also wear glasses but I'm not colour blind, just astigmatic in both my eyes.

I also lost my Dad about a year ago, I got into a depressive episode afterwards. It wasn't my first time being depressed and my GP advised me to go back onto antidepressants for a while. I'm still on them, but I could probably come off them.

I'm beginning to think it's the antidepressants. I switched them twice over the previous 6 months due to side effects. The Doctor who did the medical discussed why the switches, explaining she'd prefer for me to have been on the same for at least 6 months. She also asked did I ever think of harming myself or ending my life. I've never been suicidal thankfully, and I said as such to her. Nonetheless, she wanted a note from my doctor detailing the history of my prescriptions since my Dad passed away.

I'll see what they come back with, and if it is the anti depressants I'll chase it up. I don't necessarily think I need to be on them for much longer as I'm in a better place about my Dad.

Sorry bout your dad’s passing. Hard luck on getting so far in the recruitment process and falling at the final hurdle.

I would say(not to be unkind to you) that the medical department wouldn’t take a risk on recruiting a new driver currently on antidepressants. It would be different if you were already a driver who subsequently went on antidepressants. There’s plenty of potential recruits that are not taking antidepressants.

Remember the doctor has to sign his/her name to your driving cert that clears u to drive. If anything were to happen that doctor is facing serious questions regarding their medical judgment never mind any potential legal consequences.

I am in no way suggesting that you are in anyway a danger to yourself or anyone else.

The railway is the most risk adverse environment you’ve ever been in.

Again I don’t mean to be unkind to you.

Well said and I can't echo these words enough. I know of a driver who went out and was on antidepressants and he couldn't come back till he was off them for I think it was 3 months so hopefully that sheds some light on that for you.

Any current CIE employees on here able to help me with a question I have…. So I currently work for bus eireann and applied for Irish rail as an internal candidate , have done my medical , final interview and all just waiting to hear back but I’ve been told by other employees that I could be waiting over a year possibly . Can’t stick driving buses any longer so wondering if it would affect my application if I left bus eireann and went to another job with another company in the mean time , considering it’s an internal application what do you think? If anyone would know

I would hold out with Bus Eireann if at all possible. If you started pre 2018 with BE it could have pension implications if u break your service with CIE. PM me if u wish and I will go into more specifics.

Congrats! What depot did you apply for, if you don’t mind me asking. I had 16pf interview at end of August and the waiting to hear back is tough!

Just got an invite for my line manager interview in two weeks time. Delighted cos I didn't think my 16pf went great. Any tips or advice from those that have already done the LM interview please.

Hi slowcap, I’m in for cork. I didn’t think my 16pf went well at all but got through to my line manager interview somehow, i feel this could be the end of my journey tho. My 16pf was back in august 14th so was waiting a good bit to hear back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,333 ✭✭✭Citizen Six

They wouldn't have called you for LM interview if you didn't pass the 16pf interview.

To get to the line manager interview is quite an achievement so this could be only the start of your train driving journey literally!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 210 ✭✭romaderwdcsax

    I hope so.

3 involved in the interview according to the email so I’m just hoping to put myself across well on the day and you never know.

Worse case scenario is I’m out after line manager interview stage, been a good experience tho.

It’ll probably be the local District Traction Executive which is the person who monitors the drivers in the depot you have chosen. Also will probably be the overall manager in charge of the drivers in your area and a HR representative. Safety, Safety is the key.

Dont knock yourself down. You didn’t get this far on pure luck.

Just go over any practice material they emailed you , it does help

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,333 ✭✭✭Citizen Six

You can buy a couple of extra tests to practice on the OPC website. But just do a lot of practice with the materials they send you.

Can't fully remember but I think I was a few weeks waiting

Six months for me! I did the online assessments in January and was only invited to the next assessments in June. I think I may have received an email with some feedback before then but I’m pretty sure that it didn’t actually say if I was successful or not, just how I compared to other candidates as below average, average or above average, and that my application was with IR.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60 ✭✭jumpinjohnny85

I applied in January, completed my line manager interview and medical over 5 weeks ago and I haven't heard anything back. I'm in for Dublin, they said I would hear in 2-3 weeks at my line manager interview. I emailed them last week but I haven't had a response. I wish I would hear one way or another, I don't mind waiting for a slot in training I just wish they would let us know. Hopefully we'll all hear something back soon. 🤞
