I got a 2006 1.4 petrol VW Golf, and I'm going to do the next oil change myself. It has 200,000 km on the clock.
I called a couple of motor factors for prices, and the first one recommended 10W40 because of the car's age. He said I could also use 5w30, but if the previous owner or owners used 10w40 for years, then using 5w30 might cause problems. So 10w40 would be a safer bet.
The second recommended 5w30, and when I suggested 10w40, he balked at the idea of it.
I was wondering what people on here thought. Given the mileage of the car, which would be the best option?

Personally if it's not burning oil I'd continue with 5w30 until there was evidence it was.

Basically 10w40 is thicker than 5w30 so it will burn less quickly. Those older Golfs tend to burn a bit of oil, but either oil will work perfectly fine.
