The 90s had the fumes of the 80s when being a Property Tycoon curried some degree of awe and quasi respect. The lack of regulatory oversight and rampant Regan capitalism gave people like Trump the chance to make away like bandits. From there on in the noose kept tightening, the cultural landscape increasingly hostile to the shítheads who seemed less something to revere and instead something to mock or interrogate.

Then Obama came along, a black president and bring openly mocked by a ... well, peekaboo in public on TV broke something in his brain. I think that was the point Trump just lost the plot, to have a whole room of powerful people laugh at Donald Trump, former Titan. Egged on by an African American of all people. I mean, it was the Birther movement that seemed to be the first salvo of Trump's insanity.

It’s odd the way the World works sometimes. That we can actually attribute Trump’s 2016 presidential run to his reaction to Obama’s roast of him during his own term. For those who might not know, the image above was displayed during a 2011 White House event where Trump himself was a guest. It humorously illustrates how a Trump White House might appear, based on the gaudy stylings Trump had already become infamous for at that stage. The crowd enjoyed this rather blunt joke….with the exception of one member, who soon after built up a vendetta against Obama. He himself would run for president, and we all know what happened after.

Although the White House retained its normal paintjob under Trump, I do like to think that the Obama team did a decent job of illustrating the spirit of what we saw with Trump’s White House.

Seems increadible that one stupid joke was enough to put democracy in peril.

The bitterness comes from the system catching up to him. Decades of criminality coming home to roost.

Just imagine how much ketchup is thrown at the wall knowing Trump Org is in arrears and his only chance of getting any money recovered is after all its debts are paid - all those decades of stiffing contractors.

Trump was going to cause WW3 they said, during 4 years of peacetime. The imagination doesn't need to stretch that far to know all the chaos currently in the world would be blamed directly on Trump. Meanwhile the Biden thread practically lies dormant and he avoids criticism that would be heaped on Trump if he was still Potus.

You could always give a go at cogently offering any criticisms you think you have over in the thread instead of complaining about your own lack of bother to. When asked to actually drill into any of your empty rhetoric, and substantiate it with facts on policy, you disappear.

No, none of the money in escrow in Qatar was involved. That is fake news. I would be 'very leery of your foreign policy opinions in the future,' Burty330.

Thats entirely it Burty, Trump the madman would nuke the world they said, he couldnt be trusted to have his finger on the button, the Commander in chief.

Remind me again what global conflicts were there during his tenure ?

    Trump is right yet again

Trump was respected on the world stage. I wouldn't listen to anybody who disagrees. Walking over the DMZ with a tiny security detail says they would be wrong. . We know the $6million would not have been given to Iran under his watch. Whether that would have prevented the conflict is unknown. But you know they would be blaming it all on Trump if he was still Potus. Blood on his hands , he must stand down etc etc. . Meanwhile not a peep is said about Biden. Pure cultism.

    Respected on the world stage?

Like when the UN laughed at him?

    ”Pure cultism”

That page doesn't work for me but I think I remember that time when the tinpot tosser was laughed at at the UN.

Sadly he seems to represent a large segment of the population of the US ,so maybe they were also laughing at them?

    Ehh. No.

They were laughing at Trump and his pomposity.

President Donald Trump drew laughter from the group of world leaders gathered at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday after he boasted about his administration’s accomplishments.

“One year ago, I stood before you for the first time in this grand hall,” Trump, 72, said at the start of his speech. “I address the threats facing our world, and I presented a vision to achieve a brighter future for all of humanity. Today I stand before the United Nations general assembly to share the extraordinary progress we’ve made.”

He continued, “In less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country. … So true.”

After the crowd broke out into laughter, an apparently flustered Trump responded, “Didn’t expect that reaction, but that’s okay,” which earned him some applause.

What tightly wound, dark, little corner of one's ill mind do you have to permanently dwell in that you'd believe that Donald Trump was "respected on the world stage".

    Respected by whom?

One of Trump's last acts as President was to meet the Taliban, without the Afghan Government present, and basically start the wheel turning on the Taliban retuning to power in Afghanistan. Sure Biden was president when the troops left but the fingerprints were Trump's for screwing over the Afghan people.

And how's North Korea doing right now - a golden age of cross border cooperation right? A thawing of international relations thanks to Trump deal making prowess and getting a medal? Should I Google or will you? Thank god he wasn't president during the GFA.

Warmonger? He sure is no peace monger anyway. Don't oversell or exaggerate. Thank christ he didn't start a war cos the way he handles the peace of NK and Afghanistan Americans would have died for nothing.

If you're the type of person who likes to Both Sides the Ukraine war and try to pin the blame on the US/ NATO - and not the USSR nostalgic psychopath in the Kremlin. Then you can rhubarb rhubarb about Biden the warmonger, Trump the peace loving icon. Which, yeah, Trump would be considering he's a pal of Putins.

Eh....The rest of the world would like a word.

    No..

Not even remotely close to a vague relation of true.

    image.png

Singularly the most Internationally unpopular and least respected US President in living memory

And lets not forget, that impeached rapist would have gone to war given the chance. There was a genuine fear that he'd trigger an actual shooting conflict with Iran to deflect from his first impeachment. But thankfully neither the dimwit or his "Best People" had enough followthough to pull that off.

Biden is dealing with the fallout of the nonsense the fermented under Trump's tenure, much like Obama had to deal with what "Dubulya" managed in his 2 terms. Little of that is by choice. And let's not kid outselves, Trump would have delighted in being a "War President".

I also marvel at the notion of Trump being "respected" by anyone on the world stage beyond the typical MAGA sycofants. Trump in office was akin to a child in a creche. World leaders were likely engaged in trying to get things done and save up any useful business for when he was no longer POTUS. There was clearly little point in trying to actually talk to a man-child who gets pissy when you won't sell him Greenland (for example).

I think Trump ranked higher though in places like Africa and Asia though, right? I seem to remember that while the Developed World found Trump a horse's áss, he did seem to poll higher in the Developing World.

He was more popular in some African countries than he was elsewhere

    image.png

But - Even though those were he "best" scores , they were still worse that his predecessors

Kenya for example - 51% score for Trump but north of 80% for Obama.

    image.png

Bottom line - Trump was deeply unpopular globally as were his policies and even in places where he wasn't completely under water in terms of net approval levels , he was still well below other US Presidents.

Its interesting though that through 2017, 18 and 19 in most countries confidence in Trump increased as time went on. You would think that the longer he had to show how incompetent he was, the worse his score would be.

Interesting that his popularity was highest in the Philippines when Duterte was in charge while he remained low in Brazil even during Bolsonaro's spell.

It is interesting that his approval rating improved, though it was still very poor in most places. His popularity in Israel aside, I can't think of any particular reasons why he'd be popular in those places.

"I wouldn't listen to anybody who disagrees".....

Then accuses others of being in a cult.

    Not a hint of irony!

I think a lot of that was due to an ok economy. It's what I've always believed is Tiny's biggest actual achievement, he didn't **** up Obama's economy quite as quickly as we thought he would.

"Meanwhile the Biden thread practically lies dormant"

Let me join the dots for you.

There are bugger all scandals in Biden's tenure............. that's *why* the thread is quiet!

If you think there are, please feel free to scamper over to that thread. Bring your mates, let us know what they are and we can have a chat about it there.

Seems as if you saying that here, without any details, is a bit of a nonsense.

I'm sure if Biden was facing several state and federal indictments and trials the thread would be packed.

Hannibal Lecter is a Trump fan apparently.

According to Trump "Hannibal Lecter" told him he was great , so Trump loves him as well..

“Hannibal Lecter, how great an actor was he?” said Trump in a mix-up between the fictional character’s name and Anthony Hopkins, the actor who played the cannibal in the 1991 film.

“You know why I like him? Because he said on television on one of the – ‘I love Donald Trump.’ So I love him. I love him. I love him. He said that a long time ago and once he said that, he was in my camp, I was in his camp. I don’t care if he was the worst actor, I’d say he was great to me.”

So , In Trumps mind , a fictional homicidal maniac from a 30+ year old movie said he loved Trump so Trump loves him too.

But , something something "Joe Biden has dementia".....

Just on that awful picture in the headline: Trumpism must be the only political "movement" where the icon is always such a miserable, scowling looking man. Never looks inspiring or even attractive in any conventional sense - just cross or annoyed. Like the worst customer you ever served in any retail job.

Ah so there you go. Context is everything, I just had a memory of some countries swinging towards Trump but as you mark, he still polled unpopular compared with other presidents.

Of course you know this, I know this but whither the defence from those claiming Trump was respected? Or indeed a riposte about his giving of Afghanistan to the Taliban, or the NK talks that went precisely nowhere?
