Solar PV battery options

    Good afternoon,

I'm adding a battery to my solar PV system and would like to confirm this setup is compliant with the national rules.

    I have a Solis hybrid inverter S5-EH1P6K-L: https://www.ginlong.com/energy_storage_inverter5/3_6k_s5_l_en.html

    I'm adding the following:

And between the battery and inverter:

I'll use the EPS/back-up port of the inverter in the future, but for now I only want to connect the battery.

Am I missing something? Any recommendation?

    Thanks!

If anyone is changing the CALB 200Ah cells for the EVE 280Ah / 300Ah cells, I may be interested in the CALB's

Me too. I only have a few of them so far, honest! 😂

I have 36 (4 spare) CALB 200Ah cells if interested. Bought from PWOD and in use 12 months. Capacity is around 15kWh.

Eyeing up 300ah cells as don’t have room to expand.

Just to nail my colours to the mast, I'm not desperate for another set, it's just I'll add if a sensible opportunity presents itself. I'm willing to spend €500 for a set of 16

    Same here. I recently got 20 * CALB 200Ah from a boardsie for €500

Pricing has to be sensible as the recent CALBs can vary wildly in capacity from about 120Ah to a bit over 150Ah. It makes a lot of sense for people who have only 16 or even 32 of them to upgrade to EVEs that have nearly guaranteed capacity. Go from 200Ah CALB to 300Ah EVE and you will double, maybe nearly triple your capacity

Also willing to pay €500 per 16. Between myself and @championc we can take 32, 36, 40 or any number like that to upgrade both our systems. We don't mind the variability in the CALB capacity as when you put many of them in parallel, the law of averages will just give you a big capacity battery

Also NaFePO4 is around the corner, expected to cost roughly half of what LiFePO4 costs now. Anyone paying over the odds for LiFePO4 now, will suffer strong depreciation

    This is very interesting,

When will NaFePO4 come to the market? and what should we be paying for EVE 280K grade A batteries? I want to purchase another 160 cells?

    Thank you

    Clever play. 😂

I heard that EV's are going to suffer depreciation as there's going to be more of them made. 😆

@jumpin jack - "When will NaFePO4 come to the market? "

I don't know but I am following this with interest. I'd expect it to be at least 2 years away before we can get them for half price of what we are paying now for LiFePO4. But don't quote me on that 😂

Looks good except one thing. Avoid Pylontech if possible .

For the folks with the Huawei Sun/Luna system, how do you find the efficiency of the unit?

I see a review here on YT saying that it is losing out on output on the Huawei compared to Solis (and another brand) which is can add up.

I'm about to pull the trigger this week, so I'm curious to get your feedback to see how it is performing

@HotSwap , I see you mentioned "So because I’m on the night boost where I get cheep rate between 2-4 am; at 3kwh charge rate the most I can get into the battery is 5kWh 1kwh of lost energy in the conversions from AC to DC."

Is that amount of loss considered normal do you know? Effectively losing maybe around 1.5-2 kWh for a 10kWh battery per night if you discharge them all daily. That kinda adds up over the course of a year (548kWh pa). I wonder if other inverter like Solis would be similar during conversion

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,162 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Yep it would be close enough to 20% total losses converting from AC to DC and then from DC to AC again.

When going from AC to DC and back yeah this is normal. However sometimes you’ll be charging your battery directly from DC so you will only have the loss on the way out.

I understand the higher the load; the better the efficiency; so while my inverter is capped to only charge at 3kwh it can discharge at 6kwh; which would be operating more efficiently.

I’ve seen that video before; it would be very hard to make these comparisons unless you split your array 50/50 and sent one half to one inverter and the other half to another. Very few of these kind of comparisons exist. I’ll rewatch that video later and let you know what I think.

@HotSwap - "I understand the higher the load; the better the efficiency"

Isn't that mostly a thing of the past? Most modern inverters reach 90% or so efficiency even when only on a tiny fraction of their max output.

Yeah. But I spend a lot of time down at the 5-10% load range.

here is the curve for my inverter:

    IMG_6324.jpeg

But you’re right to point that out; I’m atcually most efficient at 3kwh and drop off slightly as I get up to 6kwh. I didn’t expect that.

That's my point! Thanks for showing the graph. At its most optimal it has 98% efficiency but even at just a 5% load, it's already 92% efficient. 10-15 years ago that was very different, inverters had terrible effiency unless at least 80-90% loaded and people were told to oversize their strings otherwise the inverter output would be poor. Thankfully these have now become old wives' tales. Mostly 😁

    Hi folks,

Thanks to @graememk for mentioning fogstar.co.uk, I'm ready to place an order for Seplos Mason kit and 16 Grade B LF280K EVE giving me 14.3kWh, so before I place the order, I wanted to get anyone's thoughts/advice.

My inverter is solis 6kw 5g model so I'm pretty much ready to go with batteries.

I'm going for the horizontal box so that I can stack a second box and I might even get a second kit if fogstar do a deal, I'd then have 28.3kWh and the job would then be done for quite some time.

do you mean cables from the inverter to the battery?

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 7,305 Mod ✭✭✭✭graememk

Yeah them boxes seem to have the fancy connectors not just bare bolt on terminals

    I could be wrong tho.

Ahh I just checked and its a screw down terminal which is handy 👍️ but I'll wait and see what actually arrives.

Also They're telling me the BMS is bluetooth but the batteries will be in my garage so well out of range of BT -- has anyone changed/upgraded this to wifi?

I'll be monitoring things through the solis & myenergi apps but would like to monitor the BMS via my phone as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,162 ✭✭✭✭unkel

The BMS is bluetooth but your inverter likely has wifi so can be monitored worldwide. Also you could have an old laptop with bluetooth near the battery or even cable connection directly to the battery, so you can monitor the system via remote access to the laptop

already have 18 panels; 6kwinverter and 10kwh battery huawei.

Let’s say I had 2k to play with for a DIY setup; what can I expect to get out of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,729 ✭✭✭bullit_dodger

Your talking about Battery (this thread) or more in general (panels etc)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,162 ✭✭✭✭unkel

@graememk has posted a link a few times about a Seplos kit with 280Ah grade B cells, available in Northern Ireland for a bit over £2k. That's 14kWh. Would be a massive upgrade of your system for relatively little money. It is a kit though, you have to build it up yourself. But it's pretty straight forward and there are vids on YouTube about it
