Water stain

Called into the parents & the toilet cistern had over flowed the bathroom was a mess with water

I got it all cleaned up and dried out but some of the water had crept under the bath & stained the roof of the kitchen,

Its not cracked or broken just stained,What would i best off doing, Do i need to prime it before i paint it and would i need to paint the entire kitchen ceiling or just the patches 4 of them

Use gloss on it first then paint over using the ceiling paint or emulsion

Give it a good chance to dry out. BIN is probably one of the best for covering water stains. Give the whole ceiling two coats of that and put a coat of your normal ceiling paint over it should completely cover up the marks.

Or ask for a stain-blocker in a painting supply shop.

any oil based paint will cover it,Evan varnish,then paint as normal

The only problem with oil or gloss paints is that it doesn't provide a keyed surface to apply the coats of ceiling paint to, the roller slips all over the place and the paint sticks in lines or blobs. You can also tell that the ceiling was painted with a gloss as it shows through the paint. That's why I prefer stain blockers as it leaves a keyed surface.

Stain block, can get a spray can of it and then paint no problem afterwards, just make sure it is properly dried out first.

Zinnser also do a 5-in-1 ceiling paint that does stain-blocking amongst other things. I've never used it but Zinsser stuff is usually pretty good IME.

One question lads how long would you leave before putting the primer over it,

The water leak would have happened yesterday afternoon ?

A good 5 days to a week, to be honest. Moisture can get into the joists and other locations, takes quite a while to get back out.

How do u know if the plaster needs replacing or just painting,

It's not sagging or broke like ?

If it looks straight and takes paint then it's fine. Otherwise if it's mushy and drooping, replace it.

Shellac-based paints like BIN act as a primer, sealer and stain blocker. IMO they are about as good as you can get, and will cover anything and stick to most surfaces and materials. However, shellac-based paints are very tricky to use as they have the consistency of milk and dry very quickly. They are also near impossible to remove from anything they might drip onto. For these reasons I would be very wary about using them on a ceiling, unless you are very sure about what you are doing.

I had a similar issue with a leaking shower.

Zinsser BIN do a spray version, I just used that on the area.

I left the stain to dry for about 2 weeks, just to be absolutely sure.

If anyone uses the spray version, be exceptionally careful to cover down the area and do-so right out to around 5m away. Those aerosol paints do carry if there is a draft and it's a complete and utter pig to clean up.

Got my hands on the Spray version last night ,

Had a friend who is a plaster say it was dry enough to spray already as it was only minor leak & is completely dry to the touch ,

,The water looks like it ran off the side of a ceiling joist so its very narrow mark but 3 foot in length if you get me ,

I'm going to give it a few days anyway to be safe

Dont think that will stop it from coming through TBH.

Best is use Zinsser "Cover Stain" to seal and lock the stain down, then a good quality top coat of perhaps Zinsser "Perma White" top coat, which is designed for rooms with high humidity \ steam such as bathrooms, shower-rooms or kitchens.

Both Zinsser products are expensive but THEY WORK first and every time.
