A first look at Magdalene Laundries thriller The Woman in the Wall staring Ruth Wilson and Daryl McCormack for BBC

Lorna Brady is a woman from the small, fictional Irish town of Kilkinure who wakes one morning to find a corpse in her house. Chillingly, Lorna has no idea who the dead woman is, or if she herself might be responsible for the apparent murder. That’s because Lorna has long suffered from extreme bouts of sleepwalking ever since she was ripped from her life at the age of 15 and incarcerated in a convent. There, Lorna gave birth to her daughter Agnes, who was cruelly taken from her and whose fate Lorna has never known

The Woman In The Wall is a six-part drama that launches in August 2023 on BBC1 and BBCiPlayer in the UK before being shown on Paramount Plus with Showtime in the US while it is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution in all other territories. It is a major drama for the BBC's Autumn TV season.

I thought maybe it was a joint production with RTE, given their current state would they have enough money to buy it

Sure we all have BBC now anyway via sattelite. There’s absolutely no practical reason for RTE to pay to show it.

The Woman in the Wall will premiere on BBC One and iPlayer at 9:05pm on Sunday 27th August 2023. The second episode will be broadcast just a day later at the slightly earlier time of 9pm.

Ruth Wilson feeling very different to her role in His Dark Materials so feels like she's putting the work in.

The dialogue like the garda "[dry dublin accent] I will not let this go" .. ehhh.. not sure about the writer(s).

I was intrigued by the prospect of a thriller set in Ireland, then I watched the trailer. And Ruth Wilson is an actor who should be in better stuff than she is.

And then I watched the trailer; hoo boy. Absolutely atrocious dialogue.

Only thing I didnt like is how it portrayed Ireland to be a bit backward and old fashioned. Every BBC drama set in Ireland seems to do this!

Yeah a few of the jokes etc felt like they where ripped from The Guard.

But overall better than a run of the mill tale based on the Magdalene Launderies

would have happened in the early 1990s. Was stuff like that still happening on a regular basis at that stage?

Couldn't get back the backwardness of it all, the ancient decor, the twee corner shop, a banger of a car and the stereotypical dumb culchie cops.

Honestly feels like a typical BBC or British drama portraying Ireland as a backwards place.

Could be a great story in there but was rolling my eyes too much!

I agree - they story is good but why portray Ireland like it was 50 years ago. Why have her living in a derelict house that looks like it hasnt been touched since the 1950's. Anyone living in the UK looking at this would get the opinion that we are a very poor, miserable, backward country. If its meant to be set in 2015 than the set is very poorly designed.

to be fair she works in a clothes shop or something she's hardly rich and seems pretty depressed. I wouldn't have thought someone like that would have the money to rent somewhere nice, there are still a lot of awfully old fashioned places out there that people are renting, I should know I've lived in a few.

Anyway I thought it was pretty good, a bit silly at times but better than most Irish based fare.

Where was it filmed?

The series was filmed on location in Northern Ireland.

The fictional village at the heart of the series, Kilkinure, is set in County Mayo, where filming took place.

The village looked to me like many villages in Ireland with the old buildings and houses, nosy neighbours etc., old fashioned Garda station

Yeah but surely most of the 'inmates' of laundries into the 1990s would have been there for decades. I can't believe pregnant teens were still being press-ganged into convents circa 1990 except in very extreme and exceptional circumstances.

This is heartbreaking. I bet they will put a twist in it and the detective was born in one of the laundries. The convent called them training centre so they did not have to pay compensation to those young girls. Awful thing to do.
