Was thinking the same, but it can be surprising how many of the LocalLink services can be delivered in a short time frame.

Not sure how the Bus Éireann services or the 139 work.

Some of the Q3 ones have launched but yes there’s a lot in the pipeline.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 910 ✭✭✭brianc89

Have they made the data on usage available? Is that something that can be requested I wonder?

Would be nice to see stats across different services, especially ones which are more frequent versus ones with only 3 or 4 services per day.

I hope they get rid of JJ Kavanaghs on the 139 route this year and get Dublin Bus or Go Ahead onto it along with integrated fares as this route stops at a number of North Kildare Train Stations. Sallins/Naas, Maynooth, Leixlip Louisa and Confey

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43 TravelCounty

That would be the best case. The cynic in me feels it will be like the 126 but just from Naas to Blanchardstown (regional fares, no proper Leap integration).

For some reason, while Naas is in North Kildare, it's given a bit of the more "rural" South Kildare treatment (no integrated and higher bus fares, etc.) with a bit of North Kildare Treatment (inclusion in SHZ).

The best case would be, like you said, basically like Dublin Bus style route with 90 min fare. South Kildare + Naas is very poorly connected to North Kildare so a much better 139 would allow a catchment of easily ~70k (including trips like quick train ride from Kildare Town to Sallins and Naas + connect with 139) to access this area without a car.

In the interim, if your destination is Maynooth, the train to Hazelhatch and then W61 is also a great alternative it seems. But I remain hopeful 🤞

On a bit of a sidenote, it would be nice for the 129 (Newbridge-Kilcullen) to be a bit more of a town-bus style arrangement (like a Carlow Town Bus-Lite). Could connect the very large new (+ planned) developments towards Athgarvan side of the town with the town center and train station.

Four new services launching on Monday August 28th:

    East Clare:

Three new TFI Local Link bus services will increase connectivity in East Clare

    18TH AUGUST 2023

TFI Local Link Limerick Clare is launching three new bus services, which will increase public transport connectivity in East Clare, from Monday 28th August 2023.

The three new Regular Rural Services (RRS) will all operate seven days a week in what is seen as a major boost in public transport for the people of Clare.

    Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan

This is part of the Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan which is a major national public transport initiative developed and funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA) as part of the Transport for Ireland (TFI) Network.

Route 318 Ennis to Limerick servicing Quin, Kilkishen, O’Callaghan’s Mills, Broadford and Ardnacrusha

Route 318 will be TFI Local Link’s first service operating from Ennis to Limerick. The route, which will significantly increase frequency, will take in towns and villages including Quin, Kilkishen, O’Callaghan’s Mills, Broadford and Ardnacrusha. The route will have three return journeys a day Monday to Sunday with the addition of an early morning connection from Quin to Limerick and a late evening return service from Limerick to Quin, an area which has seen a large population increase in recent years.

This service will be transformative for local people travelling to work, education, health or leisure appointments as the early morning service is due to arrive into Ennis before 9am, with a range of return journey options to cater for workers. The route also includes stops at Knappogue Castle and Quin Abbey, one of the most well preserved Franciscan Abbey’s in Ireland, which will give tourists the option to use public transport to visit the area.

Route 342 Flagmount to Ennis servicing Feakle, Scarriff and Tulla

Route 342 will run from Flagmount to Ennis servicing Feakle, Scarriff and Tulla along the way. This service will have three return journeys per day Monday to Sunday which will allow more people to travel using a sustainable mode of transport in their daily lives. While visitors can also see views of Lough Graney, one of the largest lakes in Clare and take in the Cahermurphy looped walk.

Route 344 Whitegate to Ennis, servicing Mountshannon

Route 344 will commence in Whitegate and travel to Ennis. It will run four return journeys Monday to Sunday. This new route will really benefit Whitegate and Mountshannon in particular and will enable better access for locals and tourists. The service will facilitate workers to get to Ennis for 8am with the option to connect with Irish Rail, Bus Éireann and other public transport services. Early evening and a night return journey will provide people with the freedom to work late and still have access to bus services to get them home.

The NTA and TFI Local Link, working in partnership, have designed the timetables and enhanced the services to meet the needs of local people, following a public consultation earlier this year.

Travel to work, college, sightseeing, or meeting family and friends

Speaking ahead of the launch, Anne Gaughan, General Manager of TFI Local Link Limerick Clare said: “We are delighted to announce this substantial expansion of services in Clare. These new high frequency routes provide a vital level of connectivity for passengers, which they can rely on to travel to work, college, training, sightseeing, or meeting family and friends.

“In partnership with the NTA, we support the Government’s Sustainable Mobility Policy and believe these new services complement this policy. The NTA is committed to the growth and development of local bus services, as we work together to deliver affordable, accessible public transport for our area.

“I’m delighted that, one of the services, includes our first Ennis to Limerick route which will provide new public transport opportunities for local people in towns and townslands along the way.”

TFI Local Link Longford Westmeath Roscommon launches new bus service between Athlone and Mullingar

    18TH AUGUST 2023

TFI Local Link Longford Westmeath Roscommon is launching a new bus route, Route 819, which will improve connectivity between Athlone and Mullingar, from Monday 28th of August 2023.

    Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan

This new route is part of the Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan which is a major national public transport initiative developed and funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA) as part of the Transport for Ireland (TFI) Network.

Route 819 connecting Athlone and Mullingar seven days a week

Route 819 which will operate five return trips seven days a week, is the second of two new rural regular routes which the NTA and TFI Local Link Longford Westmeath Roscommon launched this summer. The route will connect villages and areas such as Castletown Geoghegan, Loughnavalley, Ballymore, Drumraney, Mount Temple and Baylin.

The new route will offer a peak-time service for commuters as well as late evening services. It will also provide improved connectivity to regional bus services and the wider TFI Network with connections at Mullingar and Athlone Irish Rail station to facilitate onward travel to Dublin, Sligo and Galway. It will also serve the FÁS Centre in Garrycastle and the Fardrum stop will connect passengers to the Athlone campus of the Technological University of the Shannon.

Connecting Mullingar and Belvedere House Gardens and Park

Additionally, this route will also serve as a link between the town of Mullingar and Belvedere House Gardens and Park, with three services a day to the Westmeath County Council Parkland amenity.

A frequent bus service to rely on to travel to work, college, training, sightseeing, or meeting family and friends

Speaking ahead of the launch, TFI Local Link Longford Westmeath Roscommon General Manager, Damien O’Neill said: “We are delighted to launch this important link between the towns of Mullingar and Athlone. This route is a priority for our area and it will play an important part in developing reliable connections for our passengers. We all know the importance of using sustainable modes of public transport from an environmental point of view. It is also vital that passengers have a frequent bus service which they can rely on to travel to work, college, training, sightseeing, or meeting family and friends.

“In partnership with the NTA we are working to deliver affordable, accessible, appropriate public transport for our area. The NTA is committed to the growth and development of local bus services, which in this case, is a brand-new high frequency service linking two key rural towns that will provide opportunities for people to get where they need to go.

819 from Athlone to Mullingar, is there not already the 190 from Athlone to Drogheda via Mullingar?

It looks like the 819 Local Link will use the regional road through Ballymore.

Whereas the 190 uses the old N6?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,792 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

The 190 only serves Moate between Athlone and Mullingar, using the N6 as far as Moate, then the M6 and N52 to get to Mullingar.

The 819 will serve the local communities as you suggest.

I would suspect that the Bus Éireann route 70 will cease to operate at some point as a result of these changes.

Is there any sign of a timetable for the 819? I've dug around but haven't found anything yet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 181 ✭✭DUBLINBUSGUY

The Friday and Sunday only variation of the 70 has ceased operation when the new 190 was introduced. Bus Éireann just didn't bother taking it off the timetable.

It appears it is not publicly available yet. However, you should be able to access it on this page in the coming days; https://locallinklwr.ie/daily-services/

It was published below today. Have to say, its an exceedingly slow service. I was hoping to use it for a day out at Belvedere but a near 2 hr journey time each way just doesn't appeal

Well you could use the 190 between Athlone and Mullingar to connect into the 819. The 819 is about connecting rural communities, while the 190 is there for end-to-end trips.

Bus Éireann introducing the 170 between Cavan and Dundalk on Sunday next, 27th August. The replacement of the 166, or more specifically the current TuThO 166: Cavan - Stradone - Bailieboro - Kingscourt - Carrickmacross - Dundalk route (minus Inniskeen which is served by Local Link 171).

Six journeys in each direction daily - same timetable every day including weekends.

Disappointing that just four days before implementation there's neither publicity on the BÉ nor TFI site about it (timetable buried in "View Timetables" tab)

Somebody needs to make a map(s) of all these routes.

Another new route starting on 04 September, route 850 operating between Athlone and Roscrea (extended to Thurles on Sundays).

Presumably the Bernard Kavanagh operated commercial routes 395 and 812 are the reason it doesn't extend on Mondays to Saturdays, but you'd have to think there could be some services extended on weekdays.

It was notable driving through Donegal on Wednesday just how many different Locallink buses I passed in a relatively short period of time. Two different services in the Burtonport to Dungloe area and one in Frosses. Pre LL you would need to be lucky to see one of the rare BÉ services in the busier parts of those areas, though they were at least multiple times daily not once a week jobs.

Burtonport seems to have a minimum of 4 services on a Sunday up to 9 on Friday/Saturdays (including a night service that terminates there at 0100 on Friday/Saturday) now whereas I remember it having one minibus to Dungloe and one slow Swilly bus to Letterkenny a day. There was also a once a week Leabgarrow (Arranmore Island) - Burtonport - Letterkenny 'express' on the pilot Rural Transport Initiative back in the 00s.

Plenty of people living in places that are still on the rollout list are going to get one hell of a surprise with what level of service they get compared to days of old.

I travelled on the 166 from Cavan Bus Station to Dundalk which went via Stradone to drop an elderly lady off. Interestingly Stradone is not listed on the timetable but the bus served there and I asked a Broadstone driver who told me it is indeed supposed to service Stradone. Interestingly new Route 170 also does not list Stradone on the timetable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 319 ✭✭Geog1234

Stradone was always on the 166 routeing stretching back many decades (irrespective of passengers onboard for the village or not though usually there are). It is (was until this week) a fare stage on route 166. The Cavan - Dublin buses (stage carriage not Donegal Expresses) used to all serve the village till early Bus Éireann days around 1990.

There are hundred of locations across the country served regularly by Bus Éireann but not specifically mentioned in the timetables or journey planners. Drung and Tullyvin the other side of Cavan Town are served by the 175 but not specifically mentioned in the timetables.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 181 ✭✭DUBLINBUSGUY

Funny enough Drung and Tullyvin are served by the old 166 timetable but as you correctly state also by the 175 but not on timetable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,792 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

    Garbage in = Garbage out.

If there are stops like this BÉ should have been ensuring that they were on the timetable.

How is anyone outside of locally based passengers supposed to know these things?

A timetable should list every location served.

Bus Éireann 166 service replaced by TFI Local Link 171 and Bus Éireann 170

Route 170 is the second of two routes, in conjunction with the Local Link Route 171, in a planned phased roll out of new TFI Local Link and Bus Éireann bus services in Cavan, Monaghan and Louth.

The existing Bus Éireann 166 service was replaced by the new TFI Local Link 171 service and the new regional Bus Éireann 170 service. The new Local Link Route 171 will serve Shercock and Inishkeen, these stops are no longer served by Bus Éireann. Passengers travelling between Shercock and Cavan can transfer between Local Link Route 171 and Bus Éireann Route 170 at Carrickmacross.

Following the withdrawal of the existing 166 service, there will be no direct bus services between Shercock and Cavan on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. However, the NTA working with TFI Local Link Cavan Monaghan, are currently preparing plans to provide a new service between Virginia, Bailieboro, Shercock and Cootehill which will be implemented later this year.

Demand for our services in the East is higher now than pre-pandemic, passenger numbers nationally are 20-30% higher than they were in 2019. This enhanced service will enable us to connect our growing number of customers with who and what matters to them.”

These random cancellations and the apparent inability of BÉ/NTA to arrange replacements are undermining the ability to rely on public transport.

"Service disruption in the Southeast region on Monday 4th of September 2023

Please be advised of the following disruptions to services today Monday 4th of September 2023

    Route 370

0640 Rosslare to Waterford Hospital --- Cancelled

1000 Waterford to Rosslare --- Cancelled

Bus Éireann regrets any inconvenience this may cause our passengers.

    Sunday, 3rd September, 2023"

    From:

For the likes of Bridgetown and Baldwinstown the 06:40 Rosslare - Waterford is the ONLY bus of the entire day.

There really needs to be a strategy/policy to protect infrequent one bus a day routes from the effects of cancellations.
