I think for me as soon as I found out she was born in Tallaght her colour meant nothing to me as she is born and bred in Ireland. Other than the fact that I honestly believe black people have better genes for athletics. So I think the genes do a play a role in the same way that although Hassan runs for the NL she has those great African genes. She is getting more notoriety because shes running for Texas and getting her training there too. Any international interviews I've seen, Texas tries to claim her and then they talk about her Irish/Nigerian background.

It is a possibility that she is getting noticed more due to her colour in Ireland as well. We cant hide the fact that it is common place now to ensure that we are inclusive of everyone and you can see it in advertising and the media as a whole.

But its her talent that is being noticed the most, as someone said earlier, we have never had a sprinter of her calibre before.

What are the "great African genes". A person of east African descent such as Hassan is likely closer genetically to a Western European than they are to someone of West African descent African such as Adeleke. Only when we focus on the genes that cover skin tone can we class Adeleke and Hassan as being genetically similar

The only drawback to if and when Rhasidat starts winning medals in future, she is clearly going to come under attack from our far right friends claiming she is "not Irish".

These racists are very, very vocal on social media but I suspect they are small in number, perhaps only 1% or 2% of the population but with their hateful presence and non stop posting and retweeting, anyone would think they represent 20% or 30%. Rhasidat seems well grounded though and hopefully she knows full well that they are a very small number of loud and angry morons.

The genes cover more than skin colour, you have body composition as well.

You may as well tell us how Mageean is actually a Norwegian viking.

AS a retired member of Tallaght AC I am super proud that a Tallaght AC member is in the the 400m Final tonight, if she runs to her ability she will definitely medal 🤞🤞🤞🤞.

She also won an NCAA title in a sprint crazy market that is the US so that draws massive attention too. And lets face it, more casual fans are interested in the sprints anyway.

There's a reason she's got a big deal with Nike and its not because they want to market her to a little Island in the Atlantic, she's a potential World star in a Marquee event who is prodigously talented and young. She's the second fastest NCAA athlete of all-time, a system that has had some of the greatest sprinter ever pass through it. The only athlete faster than her at 20 that wasn't Eastern block or a doped up Salwa Eid Naser is Sanya Richards-Ross

100% and I think they are well aware they might be looking at a future Olympic and World Champion rather than a journeywoman sprinter who makes the occasional final.

She's a tall and striking young woman too, which has to work in her favour.

Ian O Riordan put up a tweet earlier with his article about Rhasidat. The amount of racist scum on the comments section would make you sick, the only positive was that it highlighted the scum and I could just block them.

I've known Rhasidat from her early days in Tallaght AC, she's always been talented, friendly and dedicated with a very supportive family network around her.

I hope she smashes it tonight, her future is bright and she's going to be a global super star!

As I said, I think it's a small number of racist creeps and ghouls posting anonymously but they are very active.

Fingers crossed Rhasidat can get onto that podium this evening. If she could medal at 20, you would think the sky would be the limit for her.

Yes, tonight should be fantastic. Jakob has been beatable in big finals before but I just can't see it this time. Not when he's in the kind of form he's been in this year. I think it's possible we could see a surprise medalist or two, I'm looking at Nordas or maybe even Laros. Although Nordas probably wouldn't be that much of a surprise, he is a 3:29 runner. There's the added interest of him being coached by Jakob's dad too, imagine if he actually finished ahead of Jakob?! Anyway, my prediction is Ingebrigtsen, Nuguse and Nordas for gold, silver and bronze.

The hurdles should be a great race too, I think it's probably still too soon for Dos Santos to challenge Warholm and Benjamin but he'll probably still get on the podium. Both Warholm and Benjamin are both obviously in great form, I wonder could we get close to sub 46 again? I think it'll be Warholm, Benjamin and Dos Santos in that order.

Tonight is obviously a huge night for Irish athletics, with the very real prospect of our first medal at Worlds for a very long time. I think the medals will come from Paulino, Adeleke, Williams, Kaczmarek or Klaver. Adeleke is the second fastest in the field but she did look like she worked quite hard to make the final. I thought Kaczmarek looked unbelievably good, would be surprised if she missed the podium. Keeping everything crossed for Rhasidat, but right now I'm thinking she'll just miss the podium. Will take a stab at Paulino, Kaczmarek and Williams for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

I think Rhasidat may have to go under her own PB in order to medal (but she's more than capable of it). Paulino looks like she might go under 49s and one or two of the others might not be too far off it either. I've a feeling she can sneak her way onto the podium.

I think Klaver can do it. Hope she does. She’s the prettiest

Adeleke, Paulino and Williams for the medals, with Kaczmarek just missing out.

400 hurdles seems intriguing, with Benjamin in such great form. Sub 46 seems possible for himself and the mad Viking.

In the 1500m, Ingebrigtsen will make it double joy for Norway, with the minor medals going to Nuguse and Kerr.

Here's hoping Lavin makes the hurdles final, too. And Murto to Finnish best in the Pole Vault.

Think youre grossly over-estimating at 1-2%, thats like nearly 100k people. The tools that swarm on fb and journal comments are in the low hundreda, and are nowhere near indicative of the general public

Looking at this recent interview with Rhasidat she comes across as a very intelligent, articulate and down to earth young lady.

She cleverly dodges getting drawn into questions around racing tactics.

Excited about this now this evening. It’s all great telly.

Yes, it's just that they are very vocal. Also, it may be that because their comments are so extreme and hate filled, they stand out from normal people, thus drawing more attention to themselves.

Like this is a bit dumb but fair play to Caune for giving it a shot. I really hope it works, but doubt it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,074 ✭✭✭✭titan18

She did it. Finished 4th I think. Fair play, that was a great watch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 208 ✭✭SuspectZero

That's some running from Caune! PB in that heat and completely solo to make the final. It always struck me as strange that other longshots don't try the same tactic in the heats, there was no way she was going through if she stayed with the pack. They have a way better shot running their own race evenly than trying to run a cutdown burnup

Hassan frontrunning this time in a heat 🤯

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,143 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

I missed most of the first 5k heat, saw Caune in front of Tsegay and assumed she was about to be lapped. Fair play to her!

Hassan ran that heat about twenty second faster than she needed to. I know it's not happening, but I'd love her to walk away from Budapest with a gold. Will be rooting for her in the final.

New PB for Lavin I think?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,143 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

National Record for Sarah Lavin. 5th, so won't make the final, but she couldn't do any more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,807 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

    New NR isn't it?

12.62 is magnificent. Especially after the tough personal year she's had. What a pro.

    Well done our kid.
