Incorrect Name on Birth Certificate

Hi,

Bit of an odd one. Turns out when I was born, my mother brought my uncle to basically pretend to be my father as my actual father was uncontactable. They didn’t know my dad’s middle name, so they put a random one. So, in effect, the name of my father on my birth cert is wrong.

now, I doubt this will ever pose an issue in Ireland, but I wanted to claim British citizenship through my father, but I just know the name mismatch will block it.

any idea if corrections can be made after 30 years? ideally my mother won’t be arrested for falsifying docs either

Yes, they can be corrected in certain circumstances, but I believe your mother may have to make a statutory declaration that the person named as your father, is not your father. There will also be lots of form filling. (She won't get into trouble for anything.)

Contact the General Register Office for information on the process involved.

It used to be on their website, but the amount of info seems to be cut down a lot, now that its just part of www.gov.ie and not its own site.

OP, have you studied this website? If your mother was/is not a UK citizen and you are relying on your father's UK citizenship, your parents need to have been married at the time of your birth. It's not clear from your post if that was the case.

What are the benefits for an Irish citizen, assuming the OP is an Irish citizen, to get UK citizenship? Our passport is ranked higher than the UK and we already have near full rights in the UK with the CTA.

There’s actually a section on there in the event of non-marriage. Father was born in the UK and has no other (claimed) citizenship so it’s definitely possible.

I’ve heard it’s easier for getting long term visas for the commonwealth, especially Canada and Australia. Nothing thoroughly researched but I’ve heard a few anecdotes.

Only if, at the time of your birth, Father was working outside the UK as as a Crown servant (e.g. in the diplomatic service, overseas civil service or armed forces).

It does just say one of the following, and he was born in the UK so that meets that criterium. Anyways, passport aside, the name is just something I'd like cleared up regardless!

Depending on age, the ability to study at a UK university without paying international fees. That's why we are getting UK passports for our children.

I'm not sure that this is going to help. UK citizens don't automatically get the domestic fee; you have to have been living in the UK for three years before the beginning of your course. But an Irish citizen who has been living the UK for three years before the beginning of the course will also qualify for the domestic fee.
