Remember that transport ship that caught fire and everyone blamed BEVs for starting the fire?

Turns out it wasn't the electric cars after all, and the media just jumped to conclusions

The electric cars are all fine and weren't even smoke damaged

There is just as much of a chance that the underwater infrastructure required for OSW installations will improve marine biodiversity as harm it.

Artificial reefs are like underwater oasis that allow for communities of life to establish themselves in the deep sea. Once the water depths go below 200 or so metres, there's not enough light to support much life.

Even Oil platforms have benefits in providing anchor points for coral and if it wasn't for the pollution risks from these platforms, they would be net benefits to marine biology.

It was a record July for wind generation, because July was a shite month and must be one of the worst Julys weather wise in manys a year. It's not something to be jumping around the place saying how great wind is, when the months previously they were shockers for wind generation due to the fine spell.

I can't believe data centres have been blamed again though. There's a myriad of things being rolled out demanding more power, data centers being one. Others include new heating solutions for homes, more EVs on the roads, more houses, more people, electrification of trains. Plus more.

I'm all for more renewable solutions. I'm also for more backups to support it. Has the renewable rollout matched what was lost when the peat burning stations were brought offline?

I think you are referring to me there and I'd like to say I didn't specify the % of power generated from wind remained static. The amount, in Gwh remained static. As a % of overall demand, then yes wind lost ground over the years.

I'd agree. Oil industry very clever to use gullible fools to paint everything other than fossil fuels as the problem.

The Greens see any upheaval, disturbance, grid and other energy issues, potential blackouts, economic and political flux and of course the weather as signs of human caused climate change. Ie, all the bad stuff is because humans have been bad for the planet. So, anything goes. Put it all in the big pot. They actually welcome human hardship and suffering. It is payback time to 'balance' nature..

What have data centres got to do with the government, Eirgrid, and the ESB being asleep at the wheel? They don't dictate public policy so why are they to blame?

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

It was 33 degrees on the 10th August. I was here. Still here.

    You're all blatant liers.

An interesting approach, one I haven't seen previously. Wonder will Coillte or the govt make any significant changes to better align that org's goals with the Climate Action Plan. I don't hold much hope where Coillte is concerned, but maybe the reform of the 1988 Forestry Act will happen which will force them to change

Would you say pulling up newly planted trees and blocking drains is the way to go about it? Wouldn't it be wiser to stop further planting of sitka than ripping up what's growing, which will be replanted and result in a further release of carbon from the soil as it's disturbed again

Green zealots lost all credibility for me now.

Imagine someone in Ireland trying to convince someone in Valencia that the weather/temperature there is wildly different to what they are actually experiencing and can see with their own eyes??

    It's mad!!

I think rewetting has to be managed properly and done carefully to ensure it achieves the best results.

I agree, stopping further Stika plantations is a smart move.

I do understand why these locals took matters into their own hands, decades of being ignored led to it. Maybe now Coillte and the govt will actually listen

    You're the liar

How sad that you think we'd believe you, despite your changing story, over the official Spanish Meteorological service.

Net Zero means we are paying for the destruction of our economy and society in pursuit of an unachievable and pointless policy.

Imagine someone trying to convince people on the internet that they can record the temperature better than the official meteorlogical service, and that all of the video interviews of people actually experiencing the stifling heat and describing it as extremely unusual are some kind of fabrication and calling all of the scientists, and all of the residents of Valencia who also reported those temperatures liars

I'd agree on all that, bar the last point. These are climate warriors of some description who felt that pulling up newly planted trees and blocking drains was a smart move. Much like the clowns letting air out of SUVs in Dublin a few weeks back.

It's the shifting of the bell curve

'Sceptics' love to talk about how these are weather events, not climate events. But the 'climate' for any region is the 'typical' weather range for each season

Extreme weather for any given region, is where the conditions are on the leading edges of the bell curve of weather for a region based on the time of the year.

Climate change shifts the bell curve. It means weather that used to be extreme, is now more common, while weather that was never even possible now becomes the new extreme edge of the curve

I googled his name and now I have to clear my search history, thanks for that

What does John Gibbons have to do with that website?

In other news, impressive figures for last week for renewables. This will increase more in years to come as solar rapidly grows and towards the end of the decade when we see offshore wind come onstream

Yeah, but Gibbons is not even a regular contributor to that site and had absolutely zero connection to anything related to that Ben Pile fellah

Is this something to do with Kevin Bacon?

The German lads have just signed off on a massive fund, the climate and transformation fund, to accelerate the green transition by providing €212 billion to various projects in building renovation, decarbonisation and the industry. Its for 2024-2027

The fund particularly aims to finance the energy-efficient renovation of buildings, the decarbonisation of industry and the expansion of renewable energies, electromobility and charging infrastructure.

Usually I would be against such action but planting of Sitka spruce in such locations may not quite be criminal damage but is at least vandalism.

The govt just released the National Sustainable Mobility progress report

There's a load of actions, some are completed, in works or delayed. This is just a selection, see the pdf on the link above for the full list

    • Demand management now has its own unit within the Transport Dept. Expect to see more test projects coming from this in the years to come. The scheme for the Greater Dublin Area is currently in progress, due Q3 2024.
    • The Walking & Cycling Index is to be expanded to cover multiple cities (Galway, Cork, Limerick & Waterford). See previous reports here
    • All transport providers are now contractually obliged to have set procedures in place to be able to deal with any passengers with mobility difficulties
    • Active Travel units in all local councils
    • Audit team established, to review completed works to ensure compliance and value for money
    • "Opportunities for transport led development" will feature more and more into the future as new planning applications will be assessed for increased access to PT/AT infrastructure. It will also see higher density developments at hubs/close to hubs
    • Roads Traffic Act update to prioritise the safety of walking & cycling
    • Transition of city bus fleets (Cork, Limerick, Galway, Dublin) to low/zero emission. Same for Local Link buses
    • Pedestrian enhancement plans being developed for the 5 cities, regional growth centres and key towns
    • Greater expansion of bike share schemes around the country
    • Currently 1,200 cycle schemes being designed/implemented around the country
    • Rail fleet expansion, 40+ new carriages placed into service already. 95 Dart+ carriages due 2025
    • Bus connects corridors progressing
    • Greenways to beat the band
    • LocalLink to be potentially expanded as a health transport service i.e. take you to and from hospital/doctor etc
    • Roll out/expand town bus services (Carlow, Ennis, Letterkenny, Mullingar, Portlaoise)
    • Hundreds of new bus shelters done and more to be done
    • BRUCE study ongoing looking at different road user charging options (congestion charges, tolls, etc)
    • Access for all - bridges/lifts at railway stations, wheelchair accessible buses and bus stations/platforms, Wheelchair Accessible Services (WAV taxi's) expanded
    • More equitable fares coming through the National Fares Strategy
    • Local Transport Plans (similar to the LSMATS, CMATS etc) are coming for nearly 20 towns around the country
    • Expand the likes of GoCar etc around the country, especially at transport hubs
    • Delayed - camera enforcement (buses, bikes & dashcams)
    • DMURS, National Cycle Manual, etc all getting updated to prioritise sustainable & accessible mobility
    • Delayed - turn left on red for cyclists, requires legislation update
    • Delayed - PPT's (e-bikes, scooters etc) to be legislated for
    • NTA to take over transport planning for the 5 cities (cue the howls of local councillors)
    • Delayed - Next generation ticketing

My personal favorite will be boring to most but which could potentially have the greatest impact

    • Review, develop and update guidelines, standards and supporting legislation to allow for a range of solutions to be developed for road space reallocation/ redesign to repurpose existing legacy car-based road design.

There's loads more in it, thats just the bits that popped out to me as I went through it

Shame we can't benefit from "zero marginal cost generation" but are stuck paying full marginal price to these companies
