Started watching the Arnie documentary last night, pleasantly surprised so far.

Started watching Season 2 of Lincoln Lawyer , very meh adored first season maybe it will improve or maybe they should have left it at 1 season.

Same. Really enjoyed season 1. Gave up after 4 eps of season 2. His love interest / client character is really unbelievable and annoying.

Ah no don't say that! I was hoping it would improve. In 1st season I really liked his charisma but this season it's turned into him been full of himself and annoying.

It was better when he was a struggling nobody.

It might improve. Watch to the end and let me know 😆

Extraction 2 is a solid action movie. Much better than the first one, not remotely original but the action is fantastic, I would say it outwicked John Wick, especially because the action doesn't outstay its welcome.

I watched a slightly rough around the edges German sci-fi film called Paradise. Its about some near future time, where science has advanced to allow people to sell years of their life to wealthy buyers for cash. Its not clear why de-aging would work this way, but if you're willing to just go along with it, the film does a good job of teasing out the various societal implications that might come with this, while remaining fairly engaging throughout.

Interesting, sounds a bit like that ‘In Time’ Justin Timberlake movie from years ago - really interesting idea, but they didn’t explore it as well as they could’ve.

Watch the episodes in reverse order: the first episode is the best, and then they get progresively worse.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Finished this and loved it, excellent last episode. Terrific music as well.

Duncan Jones is Zowie Bowie as in David Bowies son different for other filmmakers but I think he'll get by without every working again let alone big gaps between projects.

I knew he is Bowie’s kid, but it didn’t occur to me that he’d have an inheritance.

Still though, there other directors who have years between projects, like Edwards.

Writers are the same but many work on scripts that they don’t get credit for because another writer does a later rewrite, etc.

I assume they get paid regardless.

Directors can make a lot of money from directing commercials and music videos. In many cases it's how they got into the directing films and it remains their main job/source of income long afterwards.

Yup, for the majority of working directors, features are the passion projects with commercials being the day job. For all but the top handful, putting a feature together takes years and years - Jones has been packaging 'Rogue Trooper' for an age. But he's over at RSA (and Wild Gift in the US) in the meantime doing commercials, which he's been doing for ~15 years. I see Gareth Edwards is with RSA in the UK too. Lads at Jones level would be making around 50k+ per shoot-day on set.

My Sailor, my Love. Really liked this. Sentimental in a simple way but looking at real human relationships, idea, or otherwise. well acted with a cameo by Finbar Furey.

Quarterback is excellent. I don’t watch NFL at all but I watch lots of documentaries ((Last Chance, QB1, 30for30). I’ve two episodes left and it’s been a great watch, really interesting

If you like nfl stuff I would reckoned the untold latest episode. In fact the whole series is great.

With you on this, I haven't followed it since the 90's and it's changed so much and remained the same too. Well produced imho too

Quarterback is decent enough. A bit too much mahomes family reality tv for me though.

As already stated above today's johnny football untold episode is excellent. Really gripping stuff. I also recommend all untold episodes. I never skip the intro - fits perfectly.

A Man Called Otto - remake of a Swedish movie which I've yet to see - enjoyable story driven comedy-drama I really enjoyed this evening.

(Edit - apparently not in Ireland - sorry....)

Netflix's latest attempt to make a big budget franchise Heart of Stone starring Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan is surprise surprise not getting good reviewws.

Trailer looks like a fur coat no knickers effort. Also 1 of those trailers that just shows you the whole movie. Dont think I'll bother.

Fearless is a good series. The whole sport is nuts but pro bull riders definitely aren't paid enough.

Probably said this when that project was announced but I couldn't think of two less talented, less charismatic people to lead a film. No harm to Jamie, he seems like a nice guy, and well done for making a career out of being really very handsome.

The DC thread had only just been chatting about Gal Gadot and her "star power", such as it is (WRT to her apparent claims Wonder Woman 3 was still happening). Not like actors with notable physical appearances, but an absence of actual acting talent, haven't done well in the past but Gadot has seemed like an especially empty void. I had watched Heart of Stone's trailer, I think, but am not sure 'cos those Netflix "films" all bleed into each other after a while.

Dornan I think is a different matter: I think the problem is he's suffering from that "problem" where he's not a leading man but all he's getting offered are Leading Man roles 'cos of his conventionally handsome face & casting departments believing that'll suffice. Perhaps once Hollywood stops trying to Make Dornan Happen he'll get more interesting roles again.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 24,023 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

That's probably a fair assessment of Dornan. I wouldn't avoid something just because he's in it, but neither would I be rushing out to see something just because he was. Gadot's presence on the other hand is a complete red flag to me.

Weirdly enough I actually enjoyed her in the first Wonder Woman film, but that was probably because her lack of talent and charisma oddly suited the character in that initial outing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Yup that's about the size of it: Gadot's leaden energy worked with the first WW film precisely because she was meant to be a naif, utterly bewildered by the 20th Century world & the cruelty within it. Plus don't forget the secret ingredient of that film was Chris Pine, who perhaps works as a counter-point to the Jamie Dornan question; that while Pine is a conventionally handsome man, he has exactly the kind of ineffable Leading Man charisma Dornan doesn't have.

It also helped that of all the DCEU flicks, it had the strongest script (til the inevitable falling apart in the CGI driven Last Act) for everyone to work off, not least the romance between WW & Steve Trevor, and Trevor's own arc (the less said about the contrivance to bring him back in the sequel, better)

Jamie should have stuck with playing introvertive serial killers.

I'm going to throw Heart of Stone on tonight, with a couple of beers. Sounds like that kind of a movie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,272 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

They are both very pretty however neither of them actually ooze real on screen charismatic sex appeal that makes want to watch them.

Doren will find his niche on TV and he actually seem to act better with the beard.

Gadot is just an on screen charisma vacuum that actually takes away from the decent actors who share the screen with her.

Some of Dornan's Graham Norton interviews are hilarious. Maybe he should do comedy.
