Hopefully it goes that easily and they move me to the fixed D/N rate.

This seems absolutely nuts to me, that the meter has to be physically swapped out to enable day/night billing.

Surely ESBN could just supply the smartmeter readings for the appropriate day/night times to the suppliers, isn't that what smart meters are all about? I'm currently on day/night meter, and had assumed this is what would happen when ESBN get round to changing out my meter. Plus the householder should be given access to the raw data so they can make informed choices about which tariffs would be best for them.

Yes. Insanity. Insane the smart meters aren't actually that smart so need swapping.

Also odd that situation allows consumers to dictate/demand swaps (good but odd)

One swap, after that the consumer pays whatever their provider dictates.

    24hr

    All times: 29.99c

    Standing Charge: €302.92

    Nightsaver

    Day: 33.38c

    Night: 14.75c

    Standing Charge: €302.92

    Smart Meter

    Day: 33.74

    Peak: 38.15

    Night: 23.11

    Standing Charge: €302.92

I see no benefit to the smart plan. Even the day rate on the smart meter is higher than the day rate on the nightsaver meter for some bizarre reason

Many thanks for that summary, hopefully they'll get me a D/N meter and I'll be motoring for buttons ☺️

There's a procedure change starting this august to fit custiomers that are currently on MCC02 with new RM107 smart meters that can do Day Night or Smart tariffs but not 24hr.. and the RM106 smart meters can do MCC01 24hr and smart tariffs but not day night. See the common denominator? Eventually MCC01 and MCC02 will be discontinued for new signups - similar to MCC03 and other legacy MCC that are still available for customers on those tariffs but not for new connections.

Kind of grandfathered in, if you have it you have it but you can't switch to it, scenario

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,024 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Is MCC02 the present day D/N meter? If so the intention is to replace it with a smart meter(RM107), leave you on D/N with your only other option in the future being a smart plan. Am I reading that correctly? Will people still be able to order the new RM107 forfeiting their right to ever getting a 24hr plan in future?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,101 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

    Yes you are correct.

There will be 2 different forms of smart meter, RM106 and RM107. If you're on MCC02 day night meter, you will have an RM107 fitted which means you remain on D/N unless you move to smart.

Sounds like a lot of effort and expense. Would they not be better off all around making the smart plans better value? My understanding is the stupid prices on the smart plans come from the CRU so I wouldn't bother getting them involved

Or better again, install a smart meter that can be configured to provide all three tariffs and the customer can decide which tariff they want.

I have a RM107 but still on a 24hr plan, do I have the option to move to a D/N plan? I always thought I could only move to a smart plan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,711 ✭✭✭Gooser14

I currently have an RM258 electronic D/N meter. Will that eventually be replaced with a RM107 meter?

Looking good, I got a reply from Flogas I need to ring them to agree to unit rates and then they'll submit my request ☺️

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,235 ✭✭✭Paul Kiernan

Are those rates for real? Who are they with? They're better than any I've been able to find!

    an opinion;

the sooner everyone is on a smart plan and ideally the same meter the sooner the providers are forced to compete on comparable plans.

Right now the cat and mouse games, refusal to allow access to meters or stalling for changes etc serves a few customers who get lucky or time a change or delay a change, but broadly speaking for the majors the plans are complex due to volume of options and variables. This allows the providers to avoid being accountable (through easy comparisons). We shouldn't have to generate excel sheets to know who best suits our needs....

    Yes

Thats ultimately the plan. Everyone will be on either their legacy MCC or a smart plan, and no switching to a legacy plan will be allowed

Smart meters are required for a smart grid. That's why they are being installed. Combined with PV and V2G, V2H etc they will be needed. It's inevitable.

Just called Flogas to get Smart meter BWG deal and was told it's no longer available. As it's listed on their website and it's active aren't they supposed to offer this tariff to me?

Btw. no one cares about smart grid, if paying more for same electricity usage is called <smart> I don't want anything smart. And just to note, competition never brought prices down in Ireland. You can see it even now.

If they want people to be more interested to switch to smart meters then they should bring the prices down to 24 hours or D/N tariffs.

Right now it looks like a big rip off for normal home users (meaning they don't have electric car to charge etc).

RM107 smart meters are not fitted yet, the rollout hasnt begun. Perhaps someone mislabeled your meter. RM107 smart meters cannot offer 24hr plans so it is definitely not an RM107 anyway thats for sure. All smart meters to date are RM106.

RM107 are still 24HR. RM108 are the new D/N ones which haven't been rolled out yet

    What the engineers saw:

This can enable customers to access time of use tariffs that suit their usage patterns and shift consumption away from peak time when the grid is most polluting

    What the execs saw:

    Moneeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyyy€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€

I think you can guess who won that discussion 😕

Ah that make sense. Thanks. What are the chances we're going to be allowed switch from a RM107 to a RM108?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 195 ✭✭Jackben75

so what are decent rates to sign up for, first time ev owner , we have a smart meter, its difficult to know, is dual fuel agreements better? any information appreciated

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,995 ✭✭✭✭the_amazing_raisin

If you scroll back a bit there's a summary of the Flogas offer which are probably the best going at the moment

They're supposed to be for BWG employees only but a lot of us managed to sign up anyway

You may want to crunch the numbers on switching to a night meter, CoBo55 had some success doing it a few days ago. The night rate on that meter is considerably cheaper than the smart meter rate (makes for cheap driving)

You'll need to get an idea of what the impact to your electricity bill will be from getting an EV. There's a few ways to do this but probably the best is to work it out from the average annual consumption and mileage

So my ID.4 for example gets around 19kWh/100km, or 190Wh/km average for the year

If I drive 15,000km in a year then it works out like so

    (190Wh/km * 15,000km)*110%)/1000 = 3,135kWh

The 110% figure is to include charging losses. Multiply this by the night rate and that gives you your expected bill

    3,135kWh * €0.1475/kWh = €462.42

How does that compare to petrol? Let's try the same calculation for petrol at €1.60/l and consumption of 6l/100km or 0.06l/km

    (0.06l/km * 15,000km) = 900l * €1.60/l = €1,440

So a grand saved, not bad 😁

Plug your own real world numbers in to see how it compares

You can also potentially lower your costs further by getting solar panels down the road and charging the car from solar. Last month I paid a total of €0 for the electricity for my car

Great post. I'm not quite there with the meter as I couldn't get through on the phone on Friday, they don't work the weekends so I'll be on for as long as it takes tomorrow. I'll be be making sure they give me the bwg D/N rate, I have everything written down☺️

    who are BWG?
