Speeding ticket in Spain

I have definitely had to hand over my license and my passport for inspection and taking both ID numbers when renting a car in Germany. I can’t remember if I did the same with passport in Spain as I only rented there twice.

Given that you often hand over your passport when renting a car it would be very effective. Both also have your name, DOB, and nationality, which when combined is a very effective identifier.

I think sometimes people forget that other countries take their law quite a bit more seriously than Ireland.

Very Lucky on the 2nd one. If it was 101 in an 80 zone the fine would have been €300.

If you went 111 (30km over the limit) the fine would have been €600.

Strict is not the right word to use - they are fastidious in their application and collection. If its a rental car you have zero chance of avoiding it as they'll provide all your details including passport details to Guardia Civila and that's where it can start causing a problem if you ignore it.

A lot of this is only since 2019, and with 2 years of covid, not many will have experienced it, but if they have your passport details (full hire contract has to be provided by the hire company), expect issues. In terms of point, Spain don't issue points, so no points will apply.

This is, obviously, on a Spanish licence. They don't (can't yet) put points on foreign licences.

Can anyone advise further on this,, if an Irish reg car gets a spainish fine in the post box for speeding ? Is it a case of eventually the Spanish authorities may get sick of chasing up on it or are u just as well take the hit.. Now I do feel its a pure tourist trap,,, easy money for them
