See you can’t accept that I’m just interested in the concept of how did Boris Johnson get to be one of the most famous people of the 21st century.

An overweight unattractive untrustworthy liar who has treated his children abominably.

But sure yes I’m “shilling” for him.

You aren’t interested in any discussion on where these people come from or why they rise to the top.

This is a thread for repeating the same thing over and over. I understand.

You’ve even taken personal offence at any attempt to explore the phenomena in a different direction. That’s a bit mad to be honest.

She didn't get a peerage, just an OBE - basically a medal and an honourific title after her name (JK Rowling, David Beckham loads of others have this too).

So just a reward for long standing service to the Parliament but no actual power to it.

The real appointment that is questionable and possibly very juicy is the appointment of Charlotte Owen - Johnson's 29 year old aide for 18 months to a lifetime peerage. There's a lot of online chatter and speculation that she is daughter to Allegra Mostyn-Owen, Johnson's 1st wife and possibly one of Johnson's own children that he never talks about

No, you're trying to shut down criticism. You're not the first person to try this and you won't be the last. If you wanted discussion, you'd have offered a real opinion instead of trying to derail the thread.

The gaslighting is just the cherry on the cake.

The whole entity of Boris is deplorable. What I’m interested in is how he’s become the most famous political person bar 1 of the 21st century. From nowhere. Trump had daddy’s money to get started on. Are you not interested yourself?

How am I trying to shut down criticism when I’m inviting you to discuss how you think this clearly despicable person went from nobody to being the second most famous recognisable person in the world?

What evidence do you have that he's "the second most famous recognisable person in the world?"

Ok. You’ve clearly taken personal umbrage at the concept that there could be any other discussion about Boris Johnson outside of repeating the same thing over and over again (293 pages).

You’ve been affected, offended and hurt deeply in so many ways by the decisions of the brief leader of a foreign country to the extent where anything other then repeating the same condemnation over and over ad nauseum is “shilling” and “gas lighting”.

    Please, continue….

Your argument is essentially that Johnson is more famous than every sportsperson, every musician, every artist and every scientist. You've not a shred of evidence for it and you come out with hysterical nonsense when questioned.

I'll just consider this debunked and leave it there.

The whole entity of Boris is deplorable

So the entity, not the man himself.

But if you could have a go at answering the question I asked without mentioning Trump or the fact that you think he is the second most famous politician.

I’m blessed in that I can observe him and read about him with no feelings one way or the other.

Hang one, I thought you absolutely detested adulterers?

Why is Bojo slipping under that rather fortified moral radar?

The argument I believe she's trying to make is that oftentimes political figures are more than 1-dimensional. There are many layers, and far more to understand and appreciate than resorting to variations of simple slogans like, "Boris is an evil man".

You can dislike Boris Johnson whilst also having an objective assessment of his time in office. I didn't agree with everything Boris did or said. Some things yes, other things no. That's the nature of it. To play devil's advocate for a second, it would be the equivalent of me entering the thread and saying, "Boris is a great man" over and over and over again. Clearly that would be absurd. First it's not my position, second it's false, and third it denies any kind of nuanced discussion over the man, his policies, and his time in office. As well as his ascendency to the highest office in the land. Not everyone can achieve that and it takes a certain kind of character to pull that unlikelihood out of the bag. These are legitimate questions to discuss about a prominent political leader.

But invariably what we see here is the abject defenestration of nuance. All that matters is the 4-word slogans about how he's a hateful person. It's almost as if praising Johnson to any degree is considered a loss of face.

The argument I believe he's trying to make

    She is trying to make.

She absolutely detests adultery, Boris is a a serial adultery.

    But.

I’m blessed in that I can observe him and read about him with no feelings one way or the other.

So the point I am trying to make is in assessing Bojo the usual iron clad morality meter has been set to off.

    Why is that?

I didn't agree with everything Boris did or said. Some things yes, other things no

Have you examples of your disagreement on this thread?

There was enough money at home to go to Eton, which considerable shortens your odds of becoming Prime Ministers as 20 of Britain's 55 prime ministers went there.

Yes but the implication was he went because he was from a money background. That’s just not true.

A kings scholar not necessarily a paid scholarship to Eton though is it

Historically a Foundation Scholarship used to provide full and unconditional waiver of all the school fees, but since the 1960s the scholarship has been increasingly subjected to means testing. As of 2021 a scholarship does not affect the size of fees. However part or all of the fees may be waived, dependent on financial circumstances.

"monied background" is a relative term, it's not as if he went from the local state primary school to Eton. Unlike 93% of school goers in the Uk he went to a private prep school, he was always on route to an independent secondary school. Going to Eton gave him considerable advantages.

You’ve read his Wikipedia page so you know the basics. The Johnson’s didn’t and still don’t have any money. Unless you can point it out to me.

At Eton he was as entitled as ever:

Martin Hammond, who was Johnson’s housemaster and taught him classics, spotted early on that the prime minister showcased a certain irresponsibility and inattention to facts.

Writing of him in a school report in April 1982, he said: “Boris really has adopted a disgracefully cavalier attitude to his classical studies . . . Boris sometimes seems affronted when criticised for what amounts to a gross failure of responsibility (and surprised at the same time that he was not appointed Captain of the School for next half): I think he honestly believes that it is churlish of us not to regard him as an exception, one who should be free of the network of obligation which binds everyone else.”

Apparently Johnson's supposed passion for the classics, literature and history, is largely put on, along with virtually everything else about the man, or at least heavily amped up for public consumption.

About a decade ago, Seldon, who is a governor of the Royal Shakespeare Company, began an informal programme with David Cameron’s government that sought to provide for the present incumbents of the highest office some history of No 10 itself and their predecessors there. He staged a series of talks from prominent historians, as well as performances of Shakespeare in the rose garden...

When Johnson came to power Seldon hoped the programme might continue – Johnson did after all have a lucrative contract to write a book about Shakespeare. There was no interest whatsoever. “Covid made things difficult obviously,” he says, “but we did come in. Johnson never once showed up. As [his school reports showed] he had no deep interest in any classical history, language or literature or Shakespeare. His examples were always for show. At his heart, he is extraordinarily empty....

Now I've read/watched a few of Johnson's books & documentaries and you'd have to say he's clever and eloquent enough to fake it pretty convincingly but still it's dispiriting that there's apparently nothing authentic about the man...

If Johnson was working class, he'd be homeless. He comes from privilege and that's the sole reason that he isn't.

Anthony Seldon sounds vengeful for what happened with Johnson more than anything else.

Johnson can speak fluent French and Italian, not something you can "fake" if you aren't interested in language. I've watched Johnson debate matters of the classics against learned opponents, and that's not something you can just pull off at a moment's notice. Johnson has written many successful and well written books on history - again, not something you can casually fake whenever it suits.

I could go on, but stretching back to school reports as a means of discrediting what Johnson has achieved in the real world is nothing short of desperate.

Exactly. It's a bit like The Big Bang Theory. There's a few references to this Greek tragedy or Cicero or whatever but ultimately, he's just another entitled Tory careerist.
