    JOHN HODNETT

TAKE 'EM TO THE MATTHEWS BRIDGE

(few will get the reference, but those that do will never not be able to hear this)

If Kleyn becomes NIQ which could be the case in the WC warm ups, who would everyone prefer to hold onto going forward, RG or Kleyn?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,342 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Jesus, that’s a great question. Snyman’s been great since he came back but his injury record is obvious. Whereas Kleyn has been unbelievably durable.

    It’s a tough one.

Can we not keep both. What difference is it to Ireland with Munster having an IQ Kleyn to a NIQ Kleyn.

It’s a fair point seeing as he wasn’t picked for Ireland whilst IQ over the past 3 years but this is how Irish rugby has been run over the last 10-15 years. They’re not going to have two NIQ players blocking Ahern and Edogbo from coming through.

Pienaar not being allowed to renew in Ulster is an example of how it applies to all provinces. Didn’t work out bad as Cooney came through.

I suspect RG would be the one to be moved on due to a mixture of higher wage, injury profile and optics of the situation if push came to shove. When does his contract end?

Pretty sure RG’s is up end of next season, so Kleyn has an extra year on him.

I understand the rule but I really can't see how this is an issue for the IRFU, they had no problem with Kleyn (IQ) playing ahead of homegrown players, why all of a sudden would they have an issue with Kleyn playing for Munster if he becomes NIQ.

The Pienaar situation was slightly different in that the scrumhalf situation in Ireland at the time was a bit more of a concern than the lock situation is now for Ireland. Just take a look in the Ireland thread about all the players that are ahead of Kleyn.

Presumably cos he could (in theory) have played himself into contention when IQ? Whereas now he won't be able to play himself in, regardless of how well he plays.

Mind you, there isn't much more he could've done to be deserving of a chance this season and it didn't materialise.

3 big reasons why the IRFU would prefer that Kleyn was IQ.

Sometimes locks keep improving into their 30s (Toner and Donnacha Ryan were older locks before they established themselves as first choice).

    Sometimes there's an injury crisis.

A possible future Irish coach might be a fan of a more powerbased playstyle than Kleyn would suit more.

He gets a proper summer rest rather than being involved in rugby championship which could effect his form for Munster.

I had always resigned myself to the idea that Snyman would he leaving after his second contract regardless of the Kleyn situation. Can you recall a scenario where any NIQ has ever signed three consecutive contracts in Ireland? At least since Nucifora's role emerged.

So if that's the case, Kleyn could likely stay on as our single NIQ lock, and possibly get two consecutive contracts out of the IRFU. It's annoying because that might still only take him to ~33 years of age, when locks still have a lot left in the tank.

Ahern needs to show he can get through a season relatively injury free, which he hasnt. Edogbo looks to have a sizeable ceiling but will need game time and a run without injury aswell...

Day 15 as the best club across 4 countries and two hemispheres.

    UK, SA, Ireland and Italy.

    Scotland and Wales are nations.

Although I guess it gets a bit tricky since not all the UK are represented in the URC...

OK, best in 5 nations, probably easiest way to summarise.

    ALTHOUGH.

Does England still have rugby clubs....?

    (sorry, I'll stop).

Rewatched the 3 knockout games again over the weekend, went onto YouTube searching for DIY tips and saw the Glasgow game and that started it all off 🤣

After the dodgy start we never looked like losing it, throughout the Leinster game I always felt it was one we could win, despite not taking the points but it seemed that it was something they had agreed before the game as they felt Leinster would score tries. Thankfully it worked out.

The final was the surprise for me, I didn't think we'd win it but again we looked the more comfortable team and we're just unlucky not to have more scores on the board.

    How about this:

Day 16 as the best club

...in some nations / countries / other.

Re-watched the final maybe a week ago, and one thing that jump out to me, Fekitoa was absolutely unbelievable. He had 1 or 2 high-profile tackles, but some of his ruck work as well was incredibly good.

He'll be a loss next season, and you'd have to say credit to him to delivering even tho he's off. Same goes for Ben Healy. And same goes for the management who got buy-in from them. Other playerrs would've been on the beach already.

In this week's Access Munster Rowntree said he left the team selection until another day to give them time to consider all players, they really are picking the best team for the particular game.

At a Q&A recently one of Leamy, Prendergast or Kyriacou said that usually they leave the team selection until Thursday, I think it used to be Tuesdays and Wednesday a rest day but now they leave it as late as possible.

Yup, I head Leamy say that in the recent interview on OTB.

could not be more different to how farrell is picking his panel

Such great little nuggets of info in the Access Munster videos:

    image.png

So I reckon (left to right) that's:

Murray, Crowley, Casey, Healy, Fekitoa, Earls, Haley, Barron, Scannell, Beirne, RG and POM.

Interesting omissions for me: Kleyn, Kendellen, Hodnett, Frisch, Daly, Nash and Coombes.

The very surprising omission there, for me though, is Kendellen.

Yeah but you’ve also got Fekitoa and Haley in there (assuming Earls is in the senior leader category).

    It’s a bigger group than I expected.

Agreed though with the general point - it’s extremely interesting access to get. I would love if something like this was available for Leinster. Have been tempted a few times to subscribe to the Munster one.

It suggests to me that Fekitoa was leading the backline more than Frisch, which surprises me. As I thought on the pitch it looked that Frisch was more the leader. Very interesting insight.

I guess the 15 and the 12 are integral to defensive plans? I agree it does seem pretty cool.
