Good effort by Westmeath, led at half time and were three points in front with 10 minutes to play.

Westmeath should have got at least a draw out of that game, will be kicking themselves that they didn't. The OP of this thread reckoned Armagh would reach the last 4, I've seen nothing from them in the league and championship this year to suggest they'll do that this summer. They play a rested Tyrone away next weekend and lose that and it will likely finish 3rd at best in the group and then could end up playing Kerry away in the play off. They'll do well to reach another Quarter final.

Only a little over 2k in Navan today, would Ardee have held that crowd?

Monaghan have used their break wisely.

Half time Derry 0-6 Monaghan 0-7. A month ago it was 1-12 to 1-5 in favour of Derry.

0-14 each it finish. 6th minute of injury time Monaghan levelled it up and draw was the least they deserved. Debatable black probably cost them a win.

A draw 14 points each. Donegal are top of the group. Derry drew with Donegal in the Ulster Final 2022, won it in extra time. Drew with Armagh this year and won it on penalties. And another draw today.

Three top tier games today. A draw, a one point win and a two point win. An absense of drab turkey shoots. Close fought encounters between evenly matched teams. A very competetive days football. The Saturday Game is on soon.

McGeeney is Armagh's problem - until they get rid of him Armagh football won't progress. The problem for them is how do you sack a manager who was an icon as a player?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

It's a bit mad how long he has been around at this stage with a fairly average record.

Exactly. I can’t think of any period of teams he has managed where they punched above their weight in big games, or even pushed teams they weren’t supposed to beat.

McGeeney is just living on his playing reputation, plus some in the media implying he is some sort of guru.

He did look like he was gonna be a good manager early on but has had more than enough time at Armagh.

I said it to a Kildare supporter before- when McGeeney was with the lillywhites. Asking McGeeney what has he done? Surprisingly he agreed and said he just does basic instruction and gets fellas fit. That’s all.

he took the best part of that team from division 3 to division 1 lost on penalties to the all Ireland runners up , he reintroduced Ethan Rafferty as a sweeper keeper and one of the best in the country but bar jarly og and Rian its quiet the run of the mill team

they were so unlucky in both the derry game this year and the galway game last year

It's a stretch to say they were unlucky in the Galway game last year. Galway were coasting 6 points up in injury time before having an absolute brain malfunction, especially from the goalkeeper, handing Armagh an undeserved lifeline.

Armagh were exceptionally lucky yesterday, with both the goal and some dodgy referee decisions. Feel bad for Westmeath who were probably 2-3 points the better team. Ronan O'Toole must be a nightmare to play against, it's impossible to get close to him to disposses

He is supposed to pay for his and backroom team bill by the amount of sponsorship he generates so they wont get rid of him anytime soon also his wife is the physio for the team so its a family affair.... i think thats part of the reason he has lasted in the position for so long with a average amount of success...

Ah that explains it so - GAA politics at its best.

Lack of any recent success at underage level even in Ulster is Armagh's biggest issue. I see them falling back further once McGeeney departs.

McGeeney improves every team he manages, but just not enough to bring them all the way. The question then becomes whether anybody could have taken those teams to success or was just being competitive actually their natural upper limit.

Kildare were competing under McGeeney and disappeared when he left. Armagh were nowhere before McGeeney and are now close to the top.

Perhaps Armagh would do better with another manager, but I can see why they would look at Kildare and think long and hard before rolling that dice and changing things.

Armagh benefitted massively from Tyrone stinking the place out last year.

Armagh beat them in the qualifiers which made them stand out. Then they played Galway in the quarters and thanks to collapse from Galway it gave armagh a TV moment with the late equaliser.

They're a second tier side. A side that people pick as wild cards to win outrigh as they're relatively new on the scene.

I view armagh as the monaghan of a few years ago.

Commentators still don't know the black card rules in the Dublin v Roscommon game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,306 ✭✭✭✭Drumpot

Dublin starting poor, some bad decisions/mistakes and now down to 14 for 10 mins.

Clare gave us a tough game in the league and should of beaten us, I would be worried in this game

Roscommon up by 4 at HT and choking Dublin. Dublin agains the wind in second half

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,100 ✭✭✭Barlett

Well based on that first round , Mayo & Galway look to be the two strong teams

Draw game but Roscommon really should’ve won that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,147 ✭✭✭blowitupref

Most open All Ireland championship since 2010.

Roscommon at the very least deserved a draw today yet when they watch back on that game they'll know it was a win they left behind them with poor errors 2nd half especially the soft goal conceded.

A bit daft that they were 7/1 to win when you consider they finished 3rd in Div 1, beat Mayo in Castlebar and ran Galway close. Did the bookies and their punters think Dublin was playing Laois or Louth again today?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭Jock_Ewing

When was the last time, if ever, Dublin's senior footballers and hurlers drew on the same day in the championship? Probably a first since 1884.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 354 ✭✭rodmn2377

agree they will look back as one left behind but id say they will be happy enough that they didnt collapse when Dublin got the purple patch and went 2 up... i think Roscommon management might be happy enough with that result.... if they won...there would have been massive hype around them but as it is..they can pull a lot more positives out of the game then negatives...

I thought it was funny when some Dublin fans complaining about Roscommon keeping the ball for several minutes towards the end of the first half. Just like Dublin did under Gavin towards the end of the game. Roscommon could easily have won today but lost it also.
