I prefer even the traditional qualifier setup where teams got a second chance but you still had shocks. Small counties got home matches against big favourites and beat them. The good in that is gone now.

The only thing I like about the new setup is the likes of Galway having a big championship match against Tyrone in Salthill instead of Croke Park in hopefully good weather. That's a big thing.

Croke Park is drab unless it's at least 3/4 full. These home matches will be good days out.

When the problems are obvious what is wrong with pointing them out? How on earth is it better to wait until after they happen?

The negative effect on the provincials and the dead rubber group stages are already clear and obvious, the bloated and over complicated structure is already obvious, we don't need a crystal ball to predict these things.

Not to mention that opinions are worth less in hindsight.

No reason that a "small" county can't do the same over three games. Shouldn't be too difficult to finish third in a four team league. They should all be regarded as "big" counties, because the also rans are gone to the Tailteann.

Only the GAA could come up with a system where what is meant to be their premier championship competition is diluted to the extent that the vast majority of the product is shadow-boxing.

It is like sports in most other competitions and in other countries. Celtic, Rangers etc. In football Kerry have 38 titles and Dublin 30. Next best is Galway with 9. The championship format was flawed from the start, with such unequal provinces. They made an effort in the last 20 years or so, to give the majority of teams more than just one game per year. But it will never turn Wicklow or Fermanagh into All Ireland winners. Enjoy it for what it is.

Cold hard commercial reality will eventually (hopefully) force the change that's needed IMO. 2 so called provincial showpieces were on RTE Sunday played out in front of what looked liked on the telly virtually empty stadia. Have the viewing figures for those games come out yet I wonder? If they are really down, advertisers will be eventually saying to RTE we want a reduction in your advertising rates please. RTE in turn may say to the GAA, our income is down and we want to pay you less, or we only want to cover the championship from the quarter finals on. What does the GAA do then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,252 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Yeah exactly it doesn't draw the neutrals in. I don't know about anyone else but if my own team wasn't playing. And there were two teams who were well met in terms of standard, I would sit down and watch it. I didn't pay heed to a large chunk of 'championship' matches so far I didn't even switch the screen on.

It seems to me that the GAA have caught themselves between a rock and hard place. They want better quality games but they want to 'include' every county regardless of ability. But the latter part seems like that attitude of sports day in primary school IMO.

Surely a seeded weighting of teams based on performance in league and championship would be much better. They do it in soccer where teams have to earn the right to get that higher seeding. And the bigger teams suffer the consequences if standards slip. I know they are trying to tie in league and championship to some extent but to me it seems half assed.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I'm with you on that. Unless it is Cork v Kerry in the Munster final, they should not show it on TV. And the Connacht final should never be shown if Leitrim or Sligo are in it. I can't see how anyone would disgree with that. It should be written into the next contract.

There is more matches and mismatches will happen regardless of format. Cork in recent past brought Mayo to extra time, Louth held their own in Div 2 this year with Dublin and Derry. Sligo will aim to finish 3rd in that group. I'd expect Clare to finish 3rd with the shape Donegal are in this year.

Why Cork? they are currently no better than Clare matter of fact they lost to them in this years Munster quarter final and Cork's last Munster final v Kerry in 2021 was Kerry winning by 22 points.

That is a great bonus tbf, almost all county grounds will get a proper summer championship match. Great for the counties, towns and supporters

And in 2020 Cork beat Kerry in the SF. The point is that surprises do happen.

I actually meant to say small counties knocking out bigger counties/favourites. In a one off game it can be remembered for years. Not the same when it's part of a mini league. Not the same excitement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,119 ✭✭✭manofwisdom

Most important people who wants more games are the players. Ask any of them and they'll tell you more games and less training. I'd leave the league alone it's current format is the best the GAA have.

All players. 3 upcoming group games in 4 weeks will reduce training compared to waiting weeks between games.

Some teams in recent years only got two championship matches (1 provincial and 1 qualifier match) having three guaranteed matches is much better now for all that training counties do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,015 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

The suggestion that "more games is better" is total bullshit, and it is unfortunate that many in power don't seem to understand why.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,976 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

I have changed my mind. Provincial finals should always be shown Free to Air. I hope those who are moaning about Clare and Sligo being on the television at the weekend, have a change of heart as well.

Any chance we can put a ban on the constant regurgitating of the format arguments on the competition threads for football and hurling. It's so fuking tedious.

*I'm aware I'm guilty of it too.

So the guy who completely failed to mention Kerry as a contender back a few weeks ago has now woken up to their existence and thinks they are impressing the most, all after two hammerings of Tipp and Clare.

GAA journalism can be so lazy at times, well all of the time really.

Lee is probably a nice guy, but gives the impression of not going on between the ears from an analytical point of view - reminds me of Harry Enfield and his nice but dim 'character from years ago. Nice smile on him,the housewife's choice I'd imagine.

He's harmless enough though, in contrast to his team mate Alan Dillon who has joined the political ranks now off ld his mayo GAA fame. I heard him on the last few days about the GAA go - Jesus he's a right clown. Playing the populist gmse about ould lads not being able to work the internet and moaning about this and that gif course no solutions forthcoming, no brainwave as to how the GAA would finance anything, or why it's being held to different standards to other organizations, or how the GAA pay wall is different from the Sky pay wall.... Guy came across as a right idiot.

At least Leroy has no power and is unlikely to get any, Dillon is a different kettle of fish.

    😂

The bit that annoys me is when they say stuff for the sake of things - Joe Brolly/David Brady are the the main culprits.

Then backtrack and basically say 'Sure I was only having the craic!'

What sort of analysis is that?

David Brady is one I particularly remember all-Ireland semi final 2017 - Dublin v Tyrone.

Dvid Brady live on air - radio. In about a half hour period repeatedly says how he thought Con O'Callaghan could be 'got at'. Picked him out as the weakness. He said it so much that I was thinking 'Jayus, he must know something I don't'.

Match starts anyway. Con had scored 1-2 from play after about 15 mins - early goal.

Half time Brady instead of saying - 'I got that wrong etc' - said 'You have to have a bit of craic with these things'

    --

I was thinking maybe the some GAA Journalists think they have to show 'intensity' in their comments, and show 'they want it more' 😉

But these eejits are paid to give insight/analysis!

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Is it me or does Keegan talk way too fast at times? It's like several of his words blend into one when he gets a bit animated.

I wonder do RTE give these guys any media training at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,587 ✭✭✭DellyBelly

Will the news about Rory Gallagher affect Derry now. I think he'll need to step down

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,252 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

I often wondered that myself, Michael Duignan is a bit like that for the hurling, tries to say as much as he in one breath like he is running out of phone credit or something.

I wouldn't say most of the ex players are bothered with media training. The likes of Wooly Parkinson who went of and did media course are few and far between.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

@ShamoBuc @Hammer Archer, posting this as it's publicly available online but feel free to delete if it's not allowed:

Rory Gallagher: Domestic abuse allegations made against GAA manager | Impartial Reporter

From that, it doesn't sound like he's planning to step down

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,669 ✭✭✭✭charlie14

If he is on the line on Sunday I cannot see that as doing Derry any favors, but Gallagher being Gallagher I would not see him stepping down voluntarily.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 209 ✭✭Lionel Fusco

It doesn't look like he's going to and Derry don't appear like they are going to sack him.

However, the term ALLEGATIONS would need to be reinforced and remembered.

Most of ye will have seen his wifes post - some of ye may have seen the post that offers the other side of the story.

Either way, please post with the Bolded term above in mind.
