Identify this insect?

Hi, just wondering if someone could identify the flying insect in the photo. Landed next to me on the bench beside our pond and it's

not something I am familiar with so just curious. It's about 1.5 inches long, (the plank it's resting on is 9 inches wide for reference).

thanks - interesting that there are fewer than 100 records for ireland according to the biodiversity data centre. i must get the finger out and sign up so i can upload that.

what caught my eye about it was that it was the size of a fly but had a very 'flappy' flying style.
