Sad but not a surprise tbh.

Just went on both GS & Smyths checked price of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, PS5 & Xbox.

    GS: €79.99 w/ online delivery €83.49

    Smyths: €74.99 free delivery

Why would you buy from GameStop to pay an extra €8.50?

Because up to last month I could have traded Hogwarts Legacy against it and paid €35 in Gamestop.

Are you telling me then GameStop is good value if you’re willing to give away your games for a new game?

    I still rather smyths.

Gamestop did amazing value with trade ins if you knew how to play the game with the trade in boost list, loyalty card and other offers. I compare them to Ryanair in a way, some ridiculous extra fees but once you know how they work and avoid said fees you get some real bargains. With GS it was how I could justify buying new games on release, paying less than half price, sometimes i might trade in two games for a new one and they owed me money! That's gone completely now unfortunately bar the much lesser Cex option.

He means if he cleared say a new game and wasn't playing it ever again and traded it against a pre release etc. Once the game was on the list if the game was 70 he would get it for 35.it was good value that way

I know what he means. But it’s a ridiculous rebuttal imo

gamestop charge more for the game. Sure, you’ll pay a bit less if you trade in and have the level X or Y card and the pre order bonuses etc etc but if you’re just walking in off the street or grabbing the new release after work on Friday then you’re paying more it’s that simple.

GameStop failed for this reason imo. It became a system to beat almost a game in itself to buy a new game for a fair price. Do I think €75 is a fair price? No, but smyths don’t set the RRP, however GameStop made a conscious choice to charge €80.

It wasn’t always the way but for years now they’ve always and consistently been €5-10 over the price of their direct competition.

I think it was easier to get away with 20 years ago when parents, looking for a medium they knew nothing about, would go into "that gaming store" and just pay whatever to get the game their kids were asking for. My mate who's handy says I fall for this with Woodies DIY myself :D

But we've now got a new generation of parents, a huge amount of which were gamers and they are savvy enough to know they are being screwed by Gamestop prices. Especially considering the cost of kids, saving 10/20 quid on a game for them is a no-brainer.

Don't think Gamestop were even here 20 years ago. Or at least only set up a year or two.

Bring back electric boutique......games felt special back then ...... so special.....very special

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,329 ✭✭✭RGARDINR

Yeah your right they are more pricey but was food say if you got a game in say smyths a new release and you clear it and then go to gamestop and if you can trade it in and get a pre release at 35 then it's good then and just rinse and repeat. The initial 1st time get game somewhere cheaper tho. But if walking in off the St go to smyths as they are cheaper.

Sale on in store now 10% off almost everything

excluding new hardware and point of sale cards not sure what else is excluded as it's Gamestop they'll make it up as they go on.

Woodies and Halfords get away with their prices because they are the only place you can buy that kind of product on a Sunday or at 8 on Friday evening.

How GameStop thought they could keep that model up with Smyths, Tesco Curry’s et al selling the same stuff for less is a bit boggling alright.

If you know anyone with GameStop gift cards tell them to spend them soon as I'm guessing sooner or later they will stop excepting them

Yeah, that's how trading works... I kept all my PS1 games back in the day, easily done seeing as I didn't buy most of them. And while it was great, and hurt me greatly to trade them all in against a PS2, it makes sense. I was never going to play them again, so why hold onto them? If I can get a new release for €35, even at an inflated full price, it's still cheaper than Smyths €60-75. I'm a one and done gamer, I dont do second or subsequent playthroughs unless it would have a completely different story.

And I still reckon if Smyths don't get some Gamestop like competition once GS leaves, they won't keep the prices down. Time will tell I suppose. Plus most the staff manning the game section in the Smyths near me have faces like wet teabags and have zero interest in that section, and it shows. Puts me off. GS staff, for the most part, were nice, usually gamers themselves and mostly knew their stuff. Last time I was in Smyths, I was asking if they had One Piece Odyssey, and she kept going on about Mario Odyssey...

Each to their own and all that. Most people complaining about the €10 price difference between GS/Smyths usually pished plenty down a publicans jacks every weekend.

    I understand how it works.

No I definitely agree the staff are in my experience also very knowledgeable and passionate about games & pop culture! I really hope they’re not leaving, I don’t buy much from them (usually just hardware cos it’s convenient) but even that’s more expensive than smyths by a bit :’)

like I bought the TOTK switch Friday €379 in GameStop & I think €359 in smyths. It’s about a tenner or so cheaper, just seems pointless. Whatever about trading a game for a game but trading hardware usually leads to getting ripped off in any of these places

I would usually agree, but then I traded my PS4 Pro + second controller and some recentish game, and got a brand new XSX+3 months Gamepass for €110. The XSX was still €500 at that time, so trading in definitely works. Now, we have nothing to replace it. Just a low cash offer from Cex, which I assume will get lower once GS are gone because no competition.

I can see adverts/donedeal getting busy.

Smyths are competing online against Amazon etc. So they'll keep the prices down. Competition between two bricks and mortar stores is a thing of the past when you can whip your phone out and go online.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,391 ✭✭✭✭RobbingBandit

Huge banner on GameStop site everything must go.

Not going anywhere unless you cut those prices

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,329 ✭✭✭RGARDINR

I know when Henry St store closed a few mths back a lot of things went 70% off. I got hero quest for 50 euro. Not games but more or less everything else. Might end up been same.

only roughly 10% off some items, its hardly a clearance sale

Wondering what will happen with the hardware? I presume whatever isn’t sold just goes back to the supplier so I can’t see it going on sale unfortunately

my local store has a Pokémon limited ed switch and I’m tempted to ask them if they can do a price reduction to get rid of it 😂

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 18,856 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kimbot

Hardware probably wont be reduced unless they have a huge amount of stock, all the second hand consoles etc should drop in price however as they wont be able to send them back anywhere really.

There won't be any physical shops I can walk into to look for games now. Sad state of affairs really. I live down the midlands. There's zero hope of HMV or whatever opening down here. CEX sell second hand games and consoles so it's not the same. I generally don't buy games on the PS store as unless it's an older game on special offer they're generally overpriced. I prefer physical games anyway. Tesco don't even sell videogames where I am as far as I know and when they did they were always old games overpriced. I have a PS5 and was considering getting an Xbox series X at some stage but not enough good exclusives have come out for it yet to justify buying one. It's a shame really. It was a good reliable place to buy new consoles. I don't really know much about buying used consoles and what condition they're in.

HMV have been gone for yonks! They came back sort of as part of Xtra Vision, but they’re gone years themselves

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,611 ✭✭✭Padre_Pio

I popped into the shop in Cork.

True enough, 10% off everything apart from new hardware.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,670 ✭✭✭✭rob316

Its like the rest of physical media its old tech. Few years there won;t be any physical media of any platform.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 182 ✭✭jimjangles

You really should be not hoping for the end of physical media. There are plenty of gamers who still want it. You'll be completely ripped off with massive prices for digital games with a monopoly and no competition. Of course Sony and Microsoft would love that but it would be dire for consumers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,670 ✭✭✭✭rob316

Not what I'm hoping for its just what happens. CD's first, DVD's, games, cash etc

HMV are opening back up here. No idea to what capacity or if they're going to be another Golden Discs. They're advertising jobs online already.
