Birds Directive - Derogation…not yet signed

EU Derogation directive for birds expires on Sunday 30th April 2023.

This allows the shooting / trapping of greycrows and magpies.

Minister Noonan has not signed the directive yet for 2023 - 2024 season.

Hunters need to be aware that this new document needs to be signed into law before they continue hunting/ trapping in May 2023 and onwards.

EU Birds Directive Article 9 Derogations will lapse this evening 30th April 2023.

As you are aware the control of avian bird species is carried out under a State-wide Declaration to allow the control of certain wild bird species that are causing damage to crops, livestock and fauna or represent a threat to public health and safety.

Due to the failure of the Department of Housing, Heritage and Local Government to sign the renewal of the Derogation all nest protection of our game birds and vulnerable species like the Curlew, Native Grey Partridge and Grouse from Avian predation like the Magpie, Hooded Crow etc has to stop. We are advising all of our clubs and members to cease all controls on these species from today and until further notice.

Despite an abundance of science linking the control of these Bird species listed on the derogation to improved survivability of our songbirds and ground nesting birds the powers to be don't seem to care. Our members need to be careful and don't fall victim to one of the new Rangers employed by NPWS looking to boost their "Wildlife Crime " stats by catching an unsuspecting person trying to preserve wildlife and their young.

Funny that, I hatched brahma eggs for 3 weeks, had them on heat for 7 weeks, and on saturday put them outside in a pen for the first time.

An hour later, 3 grey crows had killed 3 of them and were eating them....

These hens produce eggs. Livestock. And there is nothing I can do about it...

The Minister for Housing, Local Government & Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD has decided to extend the existing General and Air Safety Wild Bird Declarations by a period of 8 months each i.e. up to 31 December 2023 bringing them in line with EU reporting period requirements i.e. 1 January to 31 December each year. In the coming months a new S.I. to replace S.I. No. 254 of 1986 will be finalised and at that stage the Minister will maintain the option to revoke these Declarations and sign new versions of the Declarations.

In addition the public consultation carried out in January & February this year received an unanticipated response with in excess of 700 individual responses. The results of this survey are currently being collated and, along with other internal discussions in relation to the species on the Declaration, will feed in to any future Declarations to be signed on the publication of the new S.I.
