  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,790 ✭✭✭2011abc

Got two packs a while ago .Not blown away to be honest especially at price point .The Lidl Wicklow blue green bag is unbeatable bang for buck I reckon .

I got a kg of Dragon and kg of Lost Highway. Really good, better as filter. I bought them when I was over last week but you do have to pay customs when ordering online which makes it kind of expensive unfortunately, worth it though IMO as it's likely the best I've had so far.

As I said before, I'd be back for more Natural LATAM coffees, well I saw this on sale at the Honest 2 Goodness Market in Glasnevin at the weekend so didn't hesitate in picking it up, a natural Peruvian from Cloudpicker - big full mouthfeel made on the Clever (Hoffman method) - lovely cocoa flavours and bitter cherry in the finish, all backed up with a great sweetness that I suppose could be construed as golden syrup if you want to take the tasting notes seriously.

Definitely recommend anyone to try natural american coffees if you see them

Kenya Zawadi Peaberry from Wogan in Bristol

This is a lovely cup, very dry finish and tart, tangy. I love these types of flavour profiles, almost like strong tea

Hacienda Sonora L9 Costa Rica Espresso

Roasted by 19Grams, bought from Kali in Galway. Delicious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,818 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

took a visit to The Old Barracks in Birdhill last week while I was on my way to Kerry. Bought 2 coffees

a natural Ethiopian that isn't on the website any more, and a honey process Costa Rican

They also have me sample bags of a washed Kenyan and a washed Bolivian

The Costa Rica was 29 quid for 250g, pricey, but it's the best coffee I've had in a while

I've also got a Columbian from Upside on the go at the moment.

So……I bought a hand grinder for work, 1Zpresso JX-PRO, nice unit, pour over Kalita Wave etc etc and walked over to 3fe, about 5 minutes away, to get a bag of something to put through and get used to the grinder. Never bought it before but bought a bag of their Malarkey blend. OMG….. never again, it’s going in the bin!!!! Zero flavour!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,818 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

did you check the roast date?

    did you grind fine enough?

I mean writing a coffee off after one cup, using a new blend and new equipment seems a bit mad.

bring it back to them and ask what they recommend you do with it

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 4,195 Mod ✭✭✭✭Planet X

    Checked roast date.

    Dialled in correctly, pour over.

    About 4 cups in.

    It’s just a grinder………”new equipment”…..

Have been using my Kalita W for a few years now, at work, and I know how to do a pour over.

    Thanks.

Just got an organic peruvian (my fave!) from the WCC sub this week - lovely mouthfeel, no bitterness and a nuttiness that comes through at the end. Would recommend!

Lovely costa rican from Full circle coffee

    https://fullcircleroasters.ie/products/la-paila-costa-rica?variant=40796560392303

If you are looking for a nice honey processed coffee would recommend - free shipping over 20 euro so decent price for the 1kg bag all in

Maybe just me, but €45 doesn't seem good value for a kg of coffee. Am I in the minority?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,818 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

you are not in the minority!

however, I'll say this - for Ireland, that price is what I'd expect to pay for a single origin, honey process coffee - in fact it's about half the price of this Honey Processed coffee from Costa Rica that I got a couple of months ago

Would I buy it all the time? No I would not - but I love trying new things and I'm willing to pay a premium the odd time to satisfy that curiosity in me. It's expensive and poor value if you look at it as the same type of purchase as a bag of lavazza from tesco. But I don't see it as similar to that at all.

That one I bought was the first time I had a Honey Process coffee, and honestly I was reminded of the first time I drank a natural process Yirgacheffe six or seven years ago. It was just so different to anything I'd drank before, complex and strange flavour combinations, the aroma, everything. I'm glad I bought it, and I'll buy it again - but it won't be my daily cup of joe

I mean in Irish terms! Also a fiver of that is essentially covering the next day courier delivery (implicitly) as that's not "free" for the company

Anyone any recommendations from Mahers Coffee in Cork, usually go for Italian blend from them but might try something different..

Was down in Sydney for work a few weeks ago. Brought back a 250g bag from Ona Coffee. Ethiopian, Aricha region.

    Washed, Heirloom variety.

Sensational, fruity, delicious. Why didn't I bring back more!!

Bought a few bags from B&D the other day, arrived this morning. I got 2 Latin American washed coffees, which is way out of my wheelhouse, I'm usually all about natural african or honey latin coffees.

Made a Hoffman Clever Method with this one

Really nice cup, and not at all what I expected from a washed coffee. I usually find the flavours muted or a bit bland with washed, but this is great, bright and acidic with a sweetness.

    Very good.

    Region: Marcala

    Altitude: 1600 – 20000 m.a.s.l

    Varieties: Catuai

    Farm: El Campo

    Process: Washed

Drying: Dried on patio, raised beds in the sun or shade for 11-20 days

Cupping notes: Simple Syrup, Black Cherry, Marshmallow

Picked up a bag of Teamwork from Calendar coffee. I know it's delicious as my favourite cafes all use it when it's in season, but I can't seem to get the same results from my setup at home. Will keep tweaking.

Since Xmas I've bought a couple of bags of Upside coffee from Driftwood in Finglas, have been very impressed by a Kenyan and Ethiopian I got from them, the Ethiopian especially which was roasted just a week before I picked it up is very nice.

    Tasting Notes

Fruity, sweet and boozy, tasting like mango & vanilla

    Details

    Roast Style | Light

    Varieties | JARC Varieties

    Growing altitude | 1925-1945 MASL

    Process | Anaerobic natural

    More Upside from Driftwood,

This Colombian Natural is really fruity and a nice light acidic finish like tropical fruit

Have enjoyed a lot of LATAM naturals over the last year or so, they are beating the East African coffees on flavour for me recently.

    Tasting Notes

Tasting like wine gums & nectarine, super sweet & juicy.

    Details

    Roast Style | Light

    Varieties | Castillo & Colombia

    Growing altitude | 2000 MASL

    Process | Natural

I, by chance, discovered a guy who owns a roastery living near me. Picked up a couple of bags from him, including this beaut

    https://blindmonkeycoffee.com/products/ch53-typica

I love these alternative processes, and this one is a Double Fermentation Thermo Shock process, and holy moly the flavours are incredible.

I don't mind paying a bit extra for coffee like this, it's totally different to most of what else is available, and super interesting, and I don't see it as even the same sort of drink to an everyday cup of Joe. More like the difference between a bottle of Jameson, and an aged single malt - you get a different experience and flavour profiles and pay for that quality difference.

It's not for everyone, I know, but anyone into this side of coffee tasting, I really recommend picking up a bag.
