Old sash window

Whats the standard size of a old sash window , 32 or 36 inchs.eg wooden window 40 years old. could i get a 36 or a 39 inch piece of wood thru a sash window 32 inchs wide if i put it at an angle .lets say the height is 36 inchs, width 32 inch.
