How Long Does It Take Before You Earn A Decent Salary In The Public Sector?

I've applied for a Temp Clerical Role with my local Co Co. Did well on the tests and have been placed on a panel. Hoping to get an interview soon.

The only problem is that the salary is abysmal. Ideally I'd hope to be made permanent. I've heard it doesn't take long to work up to a decent income in the public sector, but with the current cost of living etc, I'd like a rough idea of how long I'll be living on own brand beans on toast.

Anyone have any experience with or advice on this?

Completely depends on ability, work ethic, how much you challenge yourself to take on extra responsibility to get experience to help you progress etc

Also depends on whether you are willing to relocate / work in Dublin

I think most TCO roles are as stated, temporary.

The Public Service is large: education, healthcare, civil service, local authorities, Gardai, etc.

There is a wide range of roles, so this is an impossible question to answer.

I saw an email last year they have started interviewing TCOs for permanent roles which I think is brilliant. I was a TCO 2 years before I got a permanent position from the panel. I’m 8 years in the civil service as CO and I’m at 35k. If you go for EO obviously the scale is higher.

I know a few people who came in as TCOs or COs and are now at HEO level, within 5-8 years. I know of two people who came in at CO level and are now at Asst Sec level, over a longer time period. They would generally be the exceptions to the rule, and would require a fair degree of smarts and a commitment to personal development.
