Better options these days. Have a habit of listening to the radio on the phone, generally just Newstalk, but it's a step down even from the old school radio. Bloody music centre right there and can't be bothered.

We have 3 of the 4 in the house. Not the exact ones above, but 3 of the 4 types. Don't have the DAB one. But also have a... "Hi-Fi Entertainment System", you know the big 5 disc, 2 tape, radio with 2 equally big speakers. But we don't listen to them much anymore, they were mainly used by dad and it just doesn't feel right yet using them now he's passed.

I still do like having a gander at the mad yokes you can get these days. I remember paying €500 for one of those 2 speaker systems years ago, back around 2002. It was very very loud, but amazingly crystal clear. I mentioned it to the shop I bought it from, and they asked me to bring it back in to check it out. Seems they sold the twice as powerful speakers/system for the wrong price. Didn't ask for it back, just called me lucky and said it should have been €850!

I have an oldish radio, big wooden frame, and the big cylindrical glass valves in the back of it that take ages to heat up.

It's fierce good for heatin' up the house. I don't actually listen to any of the oul eejits ranting on on it. I turn down the volume.

I have an ancient one that used to belong to my Great Uncle. I used to turn it on every morning before I would leave the house for work. I stopped using it early on during Covid because of the same Covid information ads being repeated every ten minutes on every radio station and I haven't used it since.

I have a tuner which is connected to my amplifier - along with turntable & CD player. Use it every day.

Radio on the telly is handy and if you have satellite you can get the BBC stations.

I do but I barely use them. The one in my bedroom is there mostly for the time and the one in my Kitchen for the odd time I feel like turning it on but that's only for listening to my favorite CDs, remember them?

I have a friend on the other hand who has two radios on all the time and both on the same station so anytime I am in her house I hear radio. She is more an acoustic person where as I am more a visual person.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

You are way too advanced. A crystal set tends to keep the volume down anyway and they used to have an automated form of censorship if the program got too outrageous. Banging One's fist down in the same room caused the cats whisker to drop from the active bit of the crystal leading to a long period of self reflection as another active spot was hunted for.

Valve radios are fine if you want to blast out the neighbours, but you are totally stuffed during power cuts. For this reason alonre I cannot see them ever catching on.

A radio app will get you practically any station under the sun.

I usually just ask my Google nest thingy to ‘play classic rock’ if I want music in the background. I bought one for my dad and he loves it, he just asks it to play RTÉ gold and it stays on all day. He’s a serious music fan, he has a sound system he spent €2k on last year and hundreds of vinyl albums and CDs. He listens to them in the evening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,913 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

I’ve a pretty basic one in the kitchen.

This in my bedroom ^^^ must have it about 15 years. The quality of sound is unreal.

Have a plain Panasonic radio in the kitchen. I have it on in the background at breakfast, having my dinner, washing dishes, etc. Nice to have the background noise.

I have a radio that I listen to during the day and listen to live football not on tv , Gaelic mostly

Have a battery one, rechargeable with solar power panel on the back, sits on the kitchen windowsill for lyric fm in the mornings.

I have a radio alarm clock like the second item in the picture in my bedroom. Can't remember the brand.

I don't use the radio function on it, but I'm a heavy sleeper and the alarm is much louder than the alarm on my phone which I can't rely on to wake me up.

I like being able to see what time it is at a glance if I wake during the night, without having to fumble around for my phone in the dark.

I won't be getting rid of the radio alarm clock anytime soon. The only place I listen to the radio is in the car.

I've got a Panasonic Power blaster, probably one of the last proper quality boom boxes, but now mostly just cast to the tv. I've been meaning to get a proper amp and speakers to go slightly more audiophile.

    🙈🙉🙊

I'm becoming an oldie, but have a radio in front of me that I use most days. Sometimes I even play CDs on it.

I'm looking to get a radio for the kitchen at the moment. None in the house at the moment. I'm not bothered about great sound quality, just want to listen to the basic Irish stations in the background. I've been surpised by how expensive radios are though!

Should I get a mains operated one? Battery ones are cheaper, but will it be a false economy in the long run?

Do I need DAB (not even sure what that is) or is FM OK?

DAB is dead and buried. FM is all you need (or an app).

I have an old Sony FM radio on in the kitchen all day when I'm at home - Lyric FM as I type. While I'm commuting on the bike I listen to radio on my phone.

  • I’ve a great simple Sony radio for decades, absolutely fantastic sound. Nothing to beat it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,636 ✭✭✭✭elperello

If it's just to be used in one location then go for mains.

You could get a dual power mains and battery one which can be handy in power cuts.

FM is all you need for basic Irish stations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,495 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

Have a couple of devices that can receive FM and one that can receive AM+FM.

Think they are important if there is a power and Internet access outrage.

Bought a DAB + FM radio in Lidl recently as a cheap kitchen radio + was wondering what DAB was all about. I returned it because there are no DAB broadcasts here. 😁

To answer the OP's question, I hate radio with a passion and never listen to it. We don't have any radios in the house, and I never listen to it in the car (I do listen to music all the time). My wife very occasionally puts on something via the Echo in the kitchen, and I can't be in the same room while it's on, no matter what the show is. Hardly ever watch broadcast TV either.

Have a radio but haven't used it in a while. Just use a smart speaker these days instead. Radio is handy to have if the internet is down though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,971 ✭✭✭✭banie01

I have a few radios, 1 built in on my AV amp and a couple of portables. Apart from time in the car tho? I cannot actually remember the last time I used one.

Most of my listening these days is Spotify or podcasts.

Have one of those retro looking Roberts internet radios in the kitchen. Used everyday - mostly tuned to FM, but also used for internet streaming and Spotify. Has incredible sound when used as a speaker. Quality brand.

I don't at the moment but I'd prefer one. OH is a big fan of 'just connect your phone to the bluetooth speaker and listen to whatever you want' but most of the time in the kitchen especially it's the radio I want to listen to. The radio was always on in the kitchen at home when I was growing up and a kitchen without a radio seems a bit too quiet to me sometimes!

yes, still have a radio in the house - an old radio but it works fine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,558 ✭✭✭brokenbad

Bluetooth speaker in the kitchen - can stream radio through that.

Have an old stereo in the shed just have the radio on in the background when doing a job .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,342 ✭✭✭✭Grayson

I have google devices scattered around the apartment. So I just ask it to play the radio. Or for some stations I just stream it from my phone to the speaker.

I do think I should get some kind of AM/FM/LW radio just to have knocking around in case of power/internet outages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,711 ✭✭✭Day Lewin

I have 3 of the 4 types too.

Very handy for just blearily turning on for the News in the morning.

and they don't need to be charged, extra bonus.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,595 ✭✭✭Mal-Adjusted

I have a cassette player that's also a radio and a cd player that's also a radio. I mostly pay radio off Alexa with the echo dot in the kitchen and the eco show in the bedroom though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,259 ✭✭✭Glaceon

I have one in the kitchen and two upstairs. The one in the kitchen still gets daily use.

Half a dozen at least radios around the house, of which three in daily use.

I have one in my bedroom and listen to RTE Radio 1 and Newstalk every night and some mornings when I'm in bed. I won it about 20 years as a prize in a golf competition and it does me fine.still working perfect.I wouldn't be without it.

I have a Roberts Stream 93i which has FM, DAB , Spotify and Internet Radio. I mostly listen to Boom Radio and Classic FM through the Internet radio bit of it!

Yes 4 in total but the main ones do streaming and internet radio too. And that what's mostly on. A lot of BBC internet radio. No ads, hard to beat.

There is an alarm-radio beside the bed. It's been demoted to a clock for years now. I listen to FM the odd time in the car. Lyric FM is nice for that.

DAB is only dead and buried in Ireland, because a couple of decision makers are adversely against it.

DAB and DAB+ is alive and well in a good number of other countries. The UK has a massive choice on DAB as well as DAB+, so does Switzerland, The Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Germany. There is also a massive roll out for DAB+ in France ( whilst at the same time in Ireland the position is "now it's too late"). Even Northern Ireland has DAB and DAB+.

In the Republic of Ireland there is fierce opposition towards DAB+ and the downward compatible older DAB technology due to stubborn thinking and fears of more competition on the radio market.

I checked and I have six radios in different rooms in regular use.

Also two old valve radios, a Sierra and a Mallard. Working but not picking up much these days.

Then there's two telly's with Saorview and one with Satellite which get radio.

In closet with extra water, food, battery base, etc. Only for emergency purposes. Has own batteries. Suggested for us living in California earthquake and Pacific coast tsunami zones. Gift from family after 6.4 earthquake.

I've a Pioneer tuner in my stack; but that's it. Listen to radio on smart speakers or the TVs primarily.

And from an older era, The Kennedys of Castleross.

I'd sit alone and watch your light

My only friend through teenage nights

And everything I had to know

I heard it on my radio

You gave them all those old time stars

Through wars of worlds invaded by Mars

You made 'em laugh, you made 'em cry

You made us feel like we could fly

So don't become some background noise

A backdrop for the girls and boys

Who just don't know, or just don't care

And just complain when you're not there

You had your time, you had the power

You've yet to have your finest hour

    Radio

How will ye hear the emergency public broadcasts in an apocalyptic event without a proper radio?

Yes I do as does every household in Switzerland, where I live. It is part of the civil defense survival kit - a transistor radio and an adequate supply of batteries and regularly tested.
