No, once you've made some effort to avoid the contact you're fine. The defender can tackle you side-on. Sanction is a free kick rather than a penalty, looking at it.

It makes a bit of sense at underage level, the idea being to force the early developers to expand their game beyond smashing through defenders and give the smaller ones more time and space to tackle.

Honestly bemused at how it might play out at adult level. If it does come to pass I'll keep you posted in September.

I'd love to see how this works out. Aiming towards a more open game may allay parental concerns.

More crazy stuff coming out of Wales today. Stories of 20 and 30 cap internationals, who are currently outside the NS38 (Welsh equivalent of central contracts) being offered £30k and £40k a year deals because there's no money left for the regions once the current national team players are paid (their wages now coming out of the regions' budgets).

Which means those lads will leave to be replaced by club players, the current internationals will remain restricted in terms of their game time for the regions and the four regions (or however many remain) will be absolute whipping boys in the URC, even moreso than they already are.

It is mad , but it's also worth noting that some of those guys are reportedly currently on £250k p.a. which is way over the odds for a player outside the top 38 players in the country.

This is part of the problem in Wales that they have been involved in silly contract bidding wars over players for years leading to lots of players on far too much money.

The whole system is massively broken , there's almost nothing there worth saving structurally speaking.

You could probably argue that the English clubs spending well beyond their means for years has hurt everyone else, making rugby salaries unsustainable across the UK. The other leagues had to increase offers to stop players going to England, which we know now was for completely unsustainable salaries.

Yea, the English really are the architects for a lot of the issues in the game. French have similar high salaries, but the Top 14 seems more stringent about enforcing salary cap adherence.

I find it a difficult situation, as I'm all for the players maximizing their earnings. They shouldn't be punished for the failings of management.

I wasn't sure where to put this but anyway

All games covered. Pity it wouldn't be in HD unless you pay.

Virgin Media are awful on Saorview - Picture quality is beyond terrible , I know it's not HD but somehow even their SD signal seems to be blurrier and lower quality than SD from other channels.

And that's before we get to their mediocre commentators.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,512 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

Digital TV stations can be SD or HD, but also vary in their bitrate. So two SD stations with different bitrates could look very different, and it's especially noticeable when the picture changes quickly, e.g. in sports matches.

However, the higher your bitrate, the more it costs to transmit via Saorview.

When Virgin want you to subscribe to their platform to get the channels, and it would cost them significantly more to provide HD or even better SD via Saorview, then you can see where they're coming from.

    But it's pretty grim alright.

Virgin Media are shite on Sky Glass too. Very average HD quality. Loads of stuff doesn't show in playlist for days after it. They also name sport poorly a lot, meaning they won't group together well.

So would the World Cup warm ups be classed as the beginning of the Northern Hempisphere International teams seasons or is it the 6 Nations to the end of the world cup for the season

could have put this in a few places... AIL thread/Ulster thread

Dundee university are in the BUCS final this week.. BUCs is british 3rd level competition covering all sports.

Dundee's 22 for the final has 10 players from Ulster schools https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/sport/rugby/ulster-core-at-the-heart-of-dundee-universitys-drive-for-national-trophy-final-glory/1352812221.html?fbclid=IwAR05ZBIjvew6_y0crtv78_vGT9jU_cIgckPvjkp_XhalyquFzHVdD9zQ8Uk

Shows some of the issues Ulster have with keeping players and what issues it can have for AIL, Junior rugby and the pro set up

World Cup warmup is the start of the season.

The players do preseason before it.

It will be a very short off-season for any players that get to the URC finals , which are mid June!!.

At most they'll have maybe 2/3 weeks off and then back into training again as they build up for the World Cup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,500 ✭✭✭OldRio

It seems those in charge of Rugby have decided that what Rugby nations need is more competitions. Not content with Six Nations and Rugby Championship and the World Cup we need another.

It seems more is better. Cash is king.

Happy with that. He has earned his shot. Though I wouldn't have minded Jamie Joseph. He's done great work with Japan.

There were rumours that Schmidt was considering it. Wonder if he applied.

Whilst I think he's the right choice, I think naming him now just further undermines the current coaching team.

I understand succession planning but still think this isn't the way to do it.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 8,796 ✭✭✭fitz

I read somewhere that Schmidt had ruled himself out.

Razor has more than earned his shot, will be interesting to see how he transitions to the international stage. I do think there's a danger that NZ fans will expect a magic turnaround that doesn't get delivered to the extent they want.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,188 ✭✭✭Yeah_Right

@Quin_Dub I have such little faith in the current coach that I don't care if it undermines him.

@fitz Agreed the expectations will be ridiculously high. Not sure who NZ have first up in 2024 but if the ABs don't blow them away and immediately look like they are back to their all-conquering best, people will be complaining.

  • There's a very similar incident here in the Saracens v Quins game to the Steward/Keenan incident, looks like they're going to play on.

  • I am not sure I've ever seen a free-for-all at the rucks being allowed like I have in this game. You can just do absolutely anything you like at the ruck.

The Rugby Football Union has been given assurances London Irish will meet this month’s payroll but would still have to approve a potential takeover by US investors amid fears the Exiles could be the next Premiership club plunged into financial crisis.

    £30,000,000 in debt,,,,,,,,,,

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 16,742 Mod ✭✭✭✭Quin_Dub

    That's a crazy figure for a business with a turn-over of probably a quarter of that...At best

Its especially bad as London Irish don't own any major assets. They rent their stadium and I believe they rent their training ground too. Theres no collateral.

I know their benefactor is funding things and theres a lot of debt due to their benefactor.

Wasps and Worcester at least owned stadiums which made their debts a smaller thing.

Not sure where you got £30,000,000 from. The last set of accounts had £32,000,000 in group debts alone.
