Shimano rear derailleur barrell adjusters

What is it with Shimano and their "over engineered" barrell adjusters? the same applies to their deraillers in general

They always get clogged up with dirt over time, sieze up etc. the one on the Ulterga R8000 in particular is a very poor design IMO as the outside ring is made of plastic, so it expands when you try to turn it, which results in the metal "key" that is supposed to slot into the main body/ head on the adjuster doesn't do so and simply moves around.

lube/move them occasionally and they'll last a good while.

if using your bike in everything the Irish climate can throw at us, when you're doing your 6 monthly strip down/regrease/rebuild is an ideal time to do it.

you ARE doing six monthly stripdown/regrease/rebuilds, aren't you....?

I found a possible issue with the new cable I installed. Its a Jagwire outer cable that has an end cap pre installed on the cable. It’s a very snug fit, when it’s pushed into the barrel adjuster. I removed it and refitted it and it’s a lot better.

I still maintain that the Shimano barrel adjusters are over engineered! Totally unnecessary to have 3 separate components!
