Gary Linekers opinions on the game are widely respected by millions of football fans. As are his views on politics which was on display in stadia around England today.

Just because you don't like him doesn't make that not true. I've learned not to bother arguing with anyone who spouts that thick "woke" shte though so I'll leave it there.

Clough was a moron up his own hole and proud of his ignorance.

You seem to be under the impression that MOTD is football, just like others think Lineker is football....

    They're not.

Both can be replaced, so long as that ball keeps being kicked around the stadiums and pitches of the UK.

Lineker, in particular, is highly expendable. He was useful because he was steady and reliable. Nothing spectacular or revolutionary about his talents.

That idea Lineker can be replaced easily is what BBC thought about 36 hours ago before they were shown how idiotic that idea was.

Lineker can be replaced. The fact that he didn't present motd2 shows that he can be replaced.

All these presenters/commentators aren't striking because of Lineker. They are striking because they don't agree with the BBC being able to tell someone to stop having an opinion.

It's a massive clusterfuck by the BBC, a case study in how not to do such things. As has been said, the downing of tools by other presenters/pundits is probably more a protest against censorship than a mark of support for Lineker.

Apparently the BBC doesn't have rights to world feed commentary, so it's a 20 minute show tonight devoid of punditry/commentary. Who knows, that might actually catch on. There is definitely a market out there for putting matches on TV without any commentary or punditry...

You can already get the highlights to whatever match you want on the internet so I would say it's a pretty small audience.

Where were all these boycotts for the world Cup in Qatar?

    It's all PR.

If Lineker can compare language used to 1930s Germany, then why couldn't people compare vaccine mandates to nazis? Yet anyone who did, got condemned for daring to compare anything to something as serious as the nazis treatment of Jews.

Clough was a known socialist that gave a lot to charity. One guy that clough met on an away trip (poor council estate lad that was selling items outside the teams hotel) ended up living with him and his wife Barbara for years. He may have been arrogant in relation to football but he was a very decent human by all accounts.

Look up Craig Bromfield on youtube he gives a great inteview.

Don't think I said match of the day is football, is this going to be an ongoing thing?

but they could. there are people in tinfoil hats all over the internet comparing vaccine mandates(?) to nazis and commies.

and they can do so thanks to the fact that they had mandatory vaccines and have access to 5g towers.

It's still one of the most popular shows on British TV:

Just how popular are the UK’s best loved TV shows? (equityreleasesupermarket.com)

Now, tv viewing figures would be down generally, but it's still one of the shows that commands a high % of the viewing audience with the BBC paying over £200M for the rights to air it.

Where were all these boycotts for the world Cup in Qatar?

Which BBC presenter was taken off air over their tweets about Qatar?

That's a rhetorical question by the way. Your question is pure whataboutism.

He's probably the biggest name on the BBC alongside Graham Norton : not just some random bloke that does a bit of football presenting.

I take it from your ignorance you think football was only invented in 1992.

Clough was a great player whose career was cut short by injury.

He was a brilliant manager and took Derby from the bottom of the 2nd Division to become First Division champions.

He also led unfashionable Nottm Forest to a League title and 2 European cups aided by his no.2 the equally brilliant Peter Taylor.

He was also a wonderful and entertaining analyst in the early days of TV in football.

Unfortunately in later life he succumbed to alcoholism and became a caricature of himself.

Regarding politics Clough was a lifelong socialist, often appearing on miners' picket lines, donating large sums to trade union causes, canvassing for his local MP and being the chairman of the Anti-Nazi League. On two occasions, he was approached by the Labour Party to stand as a parliamentary candidate in general elections, but he declined in order to continue his managerial career in football To accusations that he was a champagne socialist, Clough responded: "Of course I'm a champagne socialist. The difference between me and a good Tory is he keeps his money while I share mine."

Was Brian clough resurrected and have an opinion on Gary lineker's tweet?

If Brexit is a disaster, and it seems it certainly has been, then clamping down on illegal immigration is paramount for an economy that is in deep trouble and is experiencing food shortages, an energy crisis, a health system crisis and a housing crisis.

What kind of idiot would think otherwise??? Oh ya, an insufferable football pundit!!

When the original shock jock says Lineker was out of order then you know whats what.

“There is no doubt that the Tory Government are loathsome. They are right-wing s**gs and sleazeballs, but they cannot be compared to the Nazis,” Dunphy told the Irish Daily Star.

“It was stupid of Gary Lineker to make that comparison as it diminishes the real horror of what the Jewish people went through at the hands of the Nazis.“He has been outspoken on social media before but this time he has gone over the top. It was outrageous and provocative. I think it was attention seeking.”

“I’m all for free speech and I don’t like to see people being censored, but in this case what Lineker has posted was an insult to the Jewish people.”

You're completely right, they could clamp down on illegal immigration by restoring the funding to the immigration process so they could actually get the refugees processed in a timely manner and deport those who are there illegally as per their obligations to the human rights charter which the British helped draw up in response to the Nazis.

You know, rather than acting in similar ways to germany in the 30's.

But let's be clear, they were blaming immigrants before brexit and brexit was meant to "solve" all their problems in this area, but it has in fact got worse (because why would any other country bother cooperating with them anymore?).

As said, now they've decided to bring football into it because they are extremely dumb and stupid, a complete own-goal.

then clamping down on illegal immigration is paramount for an economy that is in deep trouble and is experiencing food shortages, an energy crisis, a health system crisis and a housing crisis.

The people they are clamping down on have not done anything illegal by arriving in a dinghy!

The Tories are just whipping up hatred to distract from them ballsing up everything else!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,521 ✭✭✭✭astrofool

It is funny to see Dunphy strawman the argument :) Lineker said none of that, he compared the british government rhetoric to the same the german government were shouting that ended up leading to the Nazi atrocities.

And rather than rebut that, they copied another playbook from 30's Germany by trying to politically influence the BBC. It was an absolutely braindead move from them, they have literally (notice the correct use of the term here) proven what Lineker tweeted about by their response to the tweet.

    Satire is dead.

In what sheltered and cocooned alt right bubble world is Eamon Dunphy "the original shock jock"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,446 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Exactly, it was the major reason that RTE stopped showing their highlights package of the English Premier League and that was a good few years ago now! RTE obviously did their market research looked at the viewing figures and how people consumed soccer through various sources. And concluded it was not worth the expense.

MOTD on the other hand is sort of a British Institution and I would say there would be uproar from certain circles if it was scrapped.

The 'British Institution' vibe from MOTD is major part of the reason of this whole Lineker story. It is the same when England pundits comment on English players they are very slow to criticise 'their own'. For Lineker working within this 'British Institution' is supposed to know his place and not criticise the sitting governments polices.

And I suspect because it is a Conservative government the 'know your place' issue is more stark. Because unlike Ireland where on the whole people of all backgrounds mix to an extent. Britain 'England' is very socially divided with a 'them' and 'us'. That is the undercurrent I am getting from this.

But after all that do the BBC really need a presenter or pundits? I would be happy if the highlights were just shown on their own much quicker!

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

All the polling shows that the Brits are majorly pissed off about these boats and want them stopped, zero to do with the Tories, Sunak would ignore this is he could.

Not suprising Joe Soap is pissed off when 100 per cent of these bucks are "seeking asylum" from the war torn human rights void, that is....France.

Arriving in a dingy is pretty much exactly how you'd expect illegal immigrants to arrive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,521 ✭✭✭✭astrofool

That is not what was said, would suggest you re-read carefully and read into the sources of my claims before accusing others of being "all over the place".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,536 ✭✭✭Silentcorner

I directly quoted your post. Everyone can read what you posted. What "sources" are you on about...do you even know what you said just a minute ago even!!

You should probably stop calling other people dumb, just saying!!

Re-read it again so, pay close attention to the details before accusing me of being all over the place, here it is:

The current tory government have been extremely dumb, I don't think even they would disagree with that assessment this evening, Sunak is attempting to distance himself from it entirely, which he should have done a few days ago (and either fired or demoted braverman, only the ERG is keeping her in position as she does more and more damage).
