That last line is bonkers stuff. Of course seeing women play sport matters to girls.

Nobody is saying you need to give a flying sh1t about women's sport but let women watch and enjoy it.

The amount of coverage to women's sport is miniscule compared to men's. I don't understand why you'd get annoyed at 10 minutes coverage of women's soccer per week

Girls don't need to see girls play to play sport or be interested in it.

The entire premise of advertising and promotional campaigns for every single thing on the planet are evidence that directly counters this viewpoint.

    It's incredibly narrow minded.

Girls can't be interested in playing football after watching men play?

Strange that, local soccer club has had a womens team for years which makes no sense seemingly as they would have needed to see women play on tv to be interested.

One of the current members of the Republic of Ireland women’s panel had to play with lads until under 14s because there were so few clubs near her for her to join. I know this because I personally played against her.

Now, that club has a women’s side and schoolgirls sides at nearly every age grade.

Girls will play sport if it’s there for them to play it. That’s not going to be done by only watching the lads play it.

Such backwards nonsense with zero basis in reality. The reason why so many of our international sides are getting significantly younger is because the girls who are 20-23 had so much access to play sport than those who are 30-33 and because of that, their training levels and standards are already higher than their veteran counterparts.

Look at how good Irish women’s boxing is. We’re world leaders in the sport and it just happens to be 10 years after Katie Taylor won Olympic gold in a sport that wasn’t even in the Olympics before 2012.

If girls can see sport is there for them, they will play it. Your suggestion of ignoring it because you don’t like it makes everything worse and is woefully ignorant.

Callan's Kicks have been taing a few swipes at the OTB boys in recent weeks and their right-on wokeness and gambling and alcohol sponsorships. It's amusing if you're a regular OTB listener.

And who did Katie Taylor see winning?

Who did the O'Donovan brothers see winning rowing competitions? Are we going to be world leaders in rowing in 10 years time because of the O'Donovan brothers?

Where are all the women golfers propping up due to Leona Maguires success? 10/15 years ago we were winning world boxing championships and getting medals in the Olympics. How many medals did we get last time compared to 2012?

Any increase in interest is down to increased facilities and access, not seeing people on national tv.

Plenty of snooker on tv yet we don't have any snooker player any good? Why's that?

I really don’t think boxing is an appropriate sport for women really and it’s a bad example to cite here tbh

    What?

So you agree that giving women access to sport means they will play it. Well done.

If you don't think girls seeing women playing sport won't convince them to play it then you're deluded. For years there were problems with the drop off of girls taking part in PE in school because there was no point. It was all geared around lads and around men.

Now, girls can see that women aren't just taking part in sport but that it's also a viable career for them. It's absolutely zero coincidence that the slow-burning increased exposure that women's sport is getting is also seeing more girls teams at grassroots levels than there ever was.

You keep your head in the sand though. While you're at it, turn off the radio for 10 minutes while Off The Ball talks about the WSL.

Rowing in Ireland has seen growth in participants from 4000 in 2014 to over 30,000 in 2019. The O'Donovan brothers won silver in the olympics in 2016. I'm sure you will find that there has been a similar increase in girls taking up boxing since the London Olympics. There is a clear relationship between increased interest and media exposure for international success in minority sports.

Think I heard that, liked the bit where he was making fun of people using woke as some sort of an insult and the irony of them not getting what it means when they do it.

What are you on about PE for? Girls don't like to take part in PE for a multitude of reasons such as they don't want to look all sweaty and have makeup messed up in front of the boys, they have no interest in sport, they're not wearing sports bras and are body conscious or, they simply have no interest in sport.

Women and men are different and men are more inclined to be interested in sport. That's just the way it is, just like they're more inclined to be interested in machinery and farming or being an electrician or plasterer.

I truly feel sorry for women/girls who have fathers/brothers/partners with this mindset. It's stuck at best, in the middle of the last century.

Boys and girls are different dude, that's just a fact. They behave different and have different interests.

Given that OTB are great at discussing women's sports is there any link to OTBs coverage of the LGFAs decision on allowing transgender women allow play football against biological girls and women.

A good job questioning Kellie Harrington this morning on some of her views. Spar will be delighted the PR rep brought their name into it when trying to get him to move on.

My respect for Shane Hannon has gone way up after that.

Typical ambush of anyone guilty of WOKE heresy , what a mischief making snake that interviewer is

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,122 ✭✭✭deisedude

She shat the bed when asked a simple question. No ambush

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,992 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Can you explain what the term WOKE means to you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,906 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

There isn't a shred of truth in anything you said there.

For this particular interview, Kellie was appearing as Brand Ambassador for the Spar Community Fund, a charitable effort to support local community enhancement, like sports clubs, volunteer medical transport and older age support work.

And so, it is entirely legitimate that she be asked to reconcile her support of this fund against social media posts of hers that promote misinformation and dog whistle politics around issues that divide communities, not enhance them. Shane Hannon was questioning the clear suggestion of hypocrisy here.

Now, I'm prepared to give Kellie the benefit of the doubt to a certain point and say that she has been naive.

She's a young gay woman, from a deprived area, not particularly bright, not particularly worldly, but clearly talented at her sport. A sport in which she gets hit in the head day in, day out.

Somebody in her circle of management or advisors clearly saw this issue coming, because they took the unusual step of putting some sort of PR or media handler on the call with OTB. Now its a pity they didn't opt for someone who actually knew what they were doing, because they ended up making Kellie look churlish and precious and cowardly, none of which I actually think she is.

The right thing to have done would have been to put her hand up to being a bit naive, apologised for any offence caused and moved on. Instead, the shite PR operator has turned this into an absolute disaster for Kellie and blown it up into a far bigger problem than it might otherwise have been.

Kellie Harrington has no obligation to subscribe to any particular political / ideological position, the interviewer was like some red guard with his policing of wrong think ,disgusting
