How do these places sell alcohol before 10:30 is it a wink wink job or do they have a license for it? I've often wanted early pints but didn't think It was possible.

Ma Ryan's next to Dolan's has been gone a few years now. Half expecting Mick Dolan will take it over at some stage.

You cant get those market licenses any more if memory serves but they used to be in place like the other poster said near markets, hospitals, docks. It was essentially so shift workers can have a drink. I worked nights alot throughout my life and have frequented many a early house and they are frequented by 3 types of people, shift workers just having a pint, auld lad who get up at the crack of dawn and start drinking and people on a roll over from the previous night.

There were around 50 early houses back in 2008 when the government banned the issuing of new licences. Recession, Covid and lack of business seems to have worn that down to a handful. There's only 5 left in Dublin as well as the the aforementioned Welcome Inn in Cork. I like the Welcome Inn when waiting for a bus from Cork, has a real community feel about the place with a lot of elderly regulars. The last time I was in there the bar man was checking on everyone and organising lifts to a funeral of one of the regulars who died, this was around 8am.

We seem to be leaders in being able to maintain so many early houses. Maybe we should include this in the city's promotional brochures!

The laws are changing soon and you will be able to buy a license, like the taxis that time, will be some welcome changes to the laws.

Mark Murphy's still opens early. Most of the trade is usually done by early afternoon so not uncommon to see it closed by lunchtime.
