Thought they actually got last nights star baker & leaver correct. Had janusz gotten through it would have been purely on his earlier efforts, & thought Paul's remark that his showstopper was either under or over baked depending on the piece chosen did him in the end. Sandro's despite looking cluttered & messy was actually baked properly according to the judges so that was enough to put him ahead of Janusz & into the final.

It really was a toss up between Janusz and Sandro for the last spot in the final. I kinda would have liked Janusz in the final purely because he's so likeable and a bit of fun.

IMO it's Syabira's to lose. Unless she makes a serious mess up she should have it. Sandro is trying too hard IMO, he is desperate for Paul's handshake - I hope he relaxes in the final because he has great potential. Abdul is lovely but he has quietly coasted to the final IMO, he's good but he's not wow for me.

A very diverse final in terms of ethnicities (I hope that's ok to say).

One thing I found about this year's cycle is that a lot of the bakers are very clearly annoyed about Matt/Noel (mostly Matt a lot of the time) nattering with them. At one stage yesterday in the technical Matt was standing right in Sandro's way while he was getting his head around things. The fact that the bakes are much more complicated this year has definitely changed the banter.

I'd be no time telling the pair of them to gtf out of my face!

I presume the rules preclude that, but they must have a watertight condition in their contracts, that someone doesn't give them an earful!

Syabira gave a watered-down version last night ("Is there any way I can help?" "Go away" !!)

Janusz was good fun, but he seemed to have just hit his limit in the last couple of weeks - and his baking wasn't as precise as in the opening few rounds.

I'm definitely rooting for Syabira to win - or Abdul, I don't think he's beyond a storming round, timed just right. I think/fear Sandro will be far too stressed out to do a good job.

But Abdul's timing in the tasks is awful - Syabira always seems so under control compared to everyone else! So definitely hers to lose. And if she keeps wowing Prue with her out-there flavours, she'll def have her vote anyway!

Another thing that flummoxed me in last night's episode was Paul and Prue being absolutely scandalised about Syiabira's flavours for her signature. "Fruit and peanuts?!!!". Surely peanut butter and jam/fruit isn't that out there?

It was definitely the right call on the day to send Janusz home. I think he was running out of steam a little bit. His mini Charlottes looked lovely with the flowers on them but it was a very simple way to decorate, it didn't require any specialist skills. No sign of the drips this week at least 😆

My money is on Syabira to win, she is definitely the best of the three there.

They have to be the most underwhelming final showstoppers ever!! Though I did think the orangutan was cute in a wtf way 😂.

Glad she got it, she'd been so consistent throughout the series.

I did feel sorry for Sandro as he really did try....though I suspect he'll try to hustle some tv deal...he has that hunger.

It seemed a very fast series, time just flying by.

Agree. Was just saying the same, can't remember a poorer final. No one stood out tonight, but the best baker of the series won.

Speaking of TV deals, a bit surprised we didn't see Giuseppe pop up on our screens over the last year.

Giuseppe moved back to Italy shortly after winning.

I thought that the standard tonight was the lowest ever for a final - some pretty poor efforts in the technical. I do believe that the best person won though, delighted for Syabira.

Terribly underwhelming final, but I thought the best baker (just) across the series won. Looking back Sandro had some wonderful bakes but just seemed to lose any semblance of consistency when under pressure from the quarter finals on.

Enjoyed the series, not as much as the previous two though, and agree that it seemed to fly by in no time at all...

Already counting down the days to next years. Assume they'll have some christmas & new years specials again this year too?

Yeah, agree with all the posters above, a very unimpressive final all round.

I'm delighted Syabira won - she was just a total ray of sunshine all round, and by far the most consistent (and unusual) baker of the lot. You could just see her blossom as the series went on.

Sandro's strength was definitely in decoration - I don't particularly remember any of his bakes standing out, but I remember all those elegantly iced finished cakes! (Although Syabira's red and yellow feathery topped cake beat them out of the park)

When I was looking at them presenting their showstoppers (and this happens every single episode!) I just keep thinking of that fella's bread lion from years ago (never saw the original series so can never remember his name) - will we ever see the like again???

I thought Abdul might sneak the win when he won the technical - only by dint of being least worst, though - but while I can remember the other two, I can't even picture his showstopper, and I only watched late last night (maybe too late!)

The catch-up after the show was a bit odd, lots of grumbling on Twitter about it - they didn't mention everyone, or I don't think they did anyway - and then dragging previous series' contestants into it.

Anyway, there we are, another one over - when's the pottery or the sewing room opening???

Maybe with there not being a covid bubble this year the group didn't bond as much as in the last 2 seasons or something? The wrap up after did seem a little rushed.

Standard in the final was very poor. Jurgen would’ve won the show hands down this year if he was in it and he didn’t even make the final last season. Suppose any half decent amateur baker has already entered and taken part now at this stage. I’d say they’re struggling to find decent contestants now.

It's funny isn't it the way some years they are all a super high standard and then other years they are all a bit less polished. I absolutely agreed with Syabira as the winner, I felt sorry for Sandro as he seemed to crumble under the pressure of the final a bit.

    Matt's leaving!

  • Registered Users Posts: 849 ✭✭✭GAAcailin

Ah no, could they not get rid of Noel. Deffo prefer Matt

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,831 ✭✭✭Cork Lass

Glad Matt is leaving - he really grated on me. I don't think he suited the show at all. Bring back Sandy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Sunny Dayz

I think it's right that Matt is leaving. You could see his heart wasn't in the last series, although neither was Noel's. It took me a good while to warm to Matt and even at that I still didn't think himself and Noel were a good pairing or that Matt was the right presenter for the show.

Now.... who's going to replace him?

I've been watching old Christmas and New Year Bake-off shows, and interesting to see that Noel was annoying bakers by hanging around and getting in the way, and getting told to FRO (politely) - I thought that was something that was a recent thing but not so.

I'm surprised he hasn't got a box on the nose yet.

If anyone had to leave I'm glad it was Matt, I just never got him or his style. Seeing Noel and Sandi in the older shows gives me great nostalgia, they were just a lovely pair, with a lovely way about them.

Glad Matt's leaving. He was alright at the start but just became annoying, particularly his time calls which usually just relied on gurning face and stupid voice. Noel & Sandi used to put a bit of effort in to make them somewhat interesting or entertaining.

Noel has been great but didn't seem in great form for some of this year and was sick for parts of it. Would hope he stays on.

Will be interesting to see who they go for next.

I'd like richard ayoade. I think his type of humour works well with Noel, from seeing them on the big fat quiz together

Part of me would love to see a Goth Detectives reunion and have Russell Brand as the 2nd, but I can't see that happening.

Anyone know if they filmed Christmas /New Year specials this year?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,998 ✭✭✭Stone Deaf 4evr

James Acaster or David O Doherty would get my vote - i think you kind of need someone with a bit of deadpan humor, Matt grated on me with his over the top shtick

I've been enjoying JBO the last couple of weeks. Not a fan of Harry Hill, in general, but he is brilliant on this with the kids.

Would it be too unkind for me to say, I want anybody but Thomas to win? Sounds like he grew up as a member of the Royal Family and I suspect his parents have thrown lots of money on bakery course for him on preparation for JBO.
