I think Wales could win as they always show up at home against us. However they didn't nearly win a series in South Africa. They won 1 game when South Africa sent out the reserves. The deciding test wasn't close at all.

Sexton has won World player of the year and was in the conversation last year. While I rate Biggar, he's not currently near his best and Sexton is playing better.

They have a number of Lions but would any of them get picked if it was this year? Maybe 1 or 2.

They have been on a bad run of form and we are playing pretty good. You can't blame some fans for expecting an Irish win. I think most of us know its likely to be close. I think we are the better team and at home we'd win fairly comfortably(as we normally do). We struggle over there in the 6 nations(probably would have won last time without the red card) but I think the bookies have it right with us as 6 points favorites.

They were winning the first test but they had 4 yellow cards and at one point were down to 12, but for a couple of missed kicks they would have won the first test, and that was a fully stacked team only short Pollard starting. It was a closer series that you’re making out, even the final test was only won by 16 points, two converted tries and a missed conversion between them, wouldn’t say it was a hammering.

The point is, on their day they can be very good, and looking at the selection for today, they look good to me.

I dunno, only 16 points? To me, any 3 score game in a Test is a fairly comprehensive win.

I expect them to put it up to us today tho from the start. But I think we should have enough to win by 8-10 or so in the end.

A final test in a three test series could sometimes be a hammering by 4 or 5 tries, to be fair they were right in there for the first two tests, so I wouldn’t say the final test is the barometer at all.

Aki shouldn’t be within an arse’s roar of the 23

    Happy sixnas everyone!

    My prediction :

Very similar to our game against England last year. Wales to hang in there for 60+ minutes in a tight affair... Probably low scoring. Ireland to score 10+ unanswered points in the last 15 minutes or so to pull away.

Anyone else enjoying the media battle so far, Andy Farrell being very complimentary of Gatland, and saying how they wanted the roof closed for the test of the atmosphere, and on the other side Gatland saying he probably made a mistake not selecting Sexton for the Lions, Sexton responding calmly in his own interview that there is no grudge between them.

It’s fascinating to see how they use their opportunities to change the media spin on the match, for example Gatland saying they have a free hit out, and Farrell laughed at the suggestion and said when do we ever get a free hit in test rugby, and that he has had bad days in Cardiff in his playing days etc.

All the interviews from the players are very straightforward, just focused on themselves and their performance and aware of the massive challenge presented, but there’s a quiet confidence there.

Haven’t seen too much from the Welsh players, just comments about going after Ireland up front.

Today should throw out a few more interviews, will definitely try to watch the build up, Virgin Media to be fair do a great long intro on match days.

Will try to watch the Sharks V Stormers match beforehand on TG4.

    Merry Sixmas!! 😁

However they didn't nearly win a series in South Africa. They won 1 game when South Africa sent out the reserves

    That's very unfair tbh

The full strength SA team won the first test with a penalty with the clock in the red.

This Wales team is better than they're being given credit for.

I think that’s massively underrating Aki tbh. He’s been brilliant for us for years now.

I have seen a number of people saying that Ireland are going to pull away after 60 minutes. This is when our front row will be Healy, Herring and O'Toole, Murray and Byrne will be our half backs. Not sure about that

If the game is in the balance, we're unlikely to voluntarily make wholesale changes.

The nearly won a series in SA?

Come the fcuk of the fuckimg stage there.

Well to counter, the Welsh bench doesn't evoke much fear in me.

This Irish team is younger and more battle hardened in recent times then that Wales 23. We're familiar with each other and Farrell's systems.

If Wales do succeed in keeping the game tight to the 60 minute mark, the only way I can see them doing that is by having a savagely high tackle count.

Those older body's will struggle to maintain that rate for the full 80 minutes.

Stick a fresh (and highly motivated to prove a point) Aki into that scenario with twenty minutes to go... That's what I'm basing my opinion on.

It’s based on the premise that Wales will be out on their feet by that stage. Those players are more than capable of exploiting that.

Though having said that, Ireland aren’t generally a team that finishes strong. We usually build a lead and hold on to it to win.

Yeah it was close in the first game but SA were still comfortable enough to change their whole team and Wales needed a late kick to beats them. Decider wasn't close so Wales weren't really close to winning the series...

I wouldn't mind facing a welsh team with Rhys Webb and Owen Williams at half back. They're not exactly stacked on the bench either.

I rate reffel but the others are a grand total of meh. Their reserve lock, while a promising player, has 17 pro starts to his name, ours has 144 including a lions cap

I'm hoping to see some set piece moves from tap and go penalties. They've worked extremely well for Leinster in the Champions Cup and if Ireland get into position I think we might see a few over the tournament. They appear to be extremely difficult for defences to read.

Stats say Connor Murray is actually faster to arrive at rucks than JGP.

    No worries here

Actually on average only 0.26 seconds longer than JGP.

His game has sped up in the last year.

Expect Rio dyer to be extremely tested under the high ball now

  • Subscribers Posts: 43,423 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

Personally I would have started Casey, but now we will have tempo and zip off the bench

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,920 ✭✭✭✭stephen_n

Would still think Casey is a more like for like replacement.

  • Subscribers Posts: 43,423 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

So would I. The way he plays is more similar to JGP.

    Murray just plays differently.

They point I was making is he's actually not any significantly degree slower getting to and passing from rucks.

It's what he does when the ball is in his hands that's significantly different. Though I'm glad to see from the SA game that he has the confidence again to take on those pillar snipes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,920 ✭✭✭✭stephen_n

Yeah hopefully it has pushed him to speed up his game. It felt like his decision making hampered us against SA but we’ll see today how he can go. Which again is probably good before the RWC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,894 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

It's a hamstring issue for JGP. Doesn't bode well for his availability for the rest of the tournament.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,497 ✭✭✭A-Train

A bad feeling for this match has just gotten worse with the scrum half news. I would swapped Casey in for JGP and left Murray on the bench.

Hopefully Murray plays a blinder now and is MOTM with an Ireland win.

Murray's continued selection is baffling, this is really shaping up to be a landmine of a game.

    Disaster.
