Sad to say I had to turn Ed off last night, the new show has a blatant algorithm generated playlist and Ed is just along for the ride. Blink 182 was the last straw. I just can't understand why Bauer are doing this, it was a successful show and Ed has a good fanbase, why break a successful formula? am quite saddened by this to be honest, the show was part of my wind-down routine.

Has anyone a suggestion for a similar show on another radio station?

I listen to Tom Dunne on Newstalk from 10 to 12. It's more eclectic, and always excellent.

    I feel the same. :-(

I was out last night, but will be listening tonight, tomorrow, and Sunday, if I can, to see what it's like. And yeah, if it's all fairly algorithm-generated stuff, then, well - there's Spotify if I want algorithm-generated stuff! Was he at least taking requests, or was it all just "And now here's some Oasis"?

I don't know what Ed's figures are like (I've never seen JNLRs for that slot at all, even when Paul McLoone was doing it) but he did mention they'd gone up last time. If the figures are still low overall, I guess that would explain Bauer trying to "fix" things, even if they're going to **** things up by doing so, because that timeslot is fairly low for radio-listening compared to all those sitting in front of their tellys watching Love Island and Masked Singer Dancing On Ice.

I've been switching to 8 Radio online to avoid Ray Foley, but obviously I've no idea what the station is like during Ed's showtimes.

Am I wrong in saying Ed played a lot of the rock songs anyway mixed in with a great eclectic mix, but now it's just pure rock so his playlist pool has gotten smaller if anything?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,278 ✭✭✭TaurenDruid

    Exactly this.

And no 'Edphones' means presumably no quieter songs by rock acts, either. No more 80s music (it's been billed as 90s and 00s), presumably no more covers nights or other specials...

Exactly which would exclude any new Irish bands etc. It feels like somebody on a Bauer board missed the whole point of the show. Yes, there was always some 90's "comfort food" alternative stuff but he also played some interesting and more eclectic new stuff and a few requests and theme nights. It is sad seeing the homogenisation of radio. It feels like we are about 10 years away from just having A.I's presenting shows.

    You'd almost miss Fergal D'Arcy wouldn't you? 😁

    This too shall pass.

Yep good show. I actually switched back to Dan Hegarty on 2FM a few months back after not listening for years, even tho he was a constant for me in school/college. It's a great listen too.

Weird move so. Can't imagine he's too happy about it

arent you being a tad pedantic? Considering Dec will have daytime dance tracks on his show.

so that’s 148 hours of daytime music and talk per week vs 20 hours of non daytime music per week.

Ed used to always post the tracks he played on twitter. Last one he posted was from Sunday. "Handpicked" was mentioned in the tweet.

I wasn't been pedantic at all just pointing out its more than 15hrs

I don't think I've ever heard Ed play Coldplay before... 😬

Jaysus they are ridiculous in their pushing of Today FM rocks. Ian D plugged it before and after a song this morning. Then the ad for it was on not long after with the most dreary and overplayed rock tracks imaginable. Puke...

At least it would have stopped Ian talking about the Cash Machine for a couple of minutes.

I turned on Ed for the last time going to bed last night and Coldplay were on, Sayonara. I switched over to Dan Hegarty. I'd forgotten how good Hegarty is. That's probably the end of today fm for me.

Ah no. I thought the earlier poster was joking.

Say it ain't so Ed, say it ain't so

Ray foley covering for Ian Dempsey again next week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,608 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

When Ian Dempsey retires, or decides to pursue other projects, do you think Ray Foley will be his permanent replacement if he is still with Today FM at that stage?

Apart from Marty Whelan on Lyric and Robbie Fogergty on 106.8, The Dempsey show is the only solo presenter breakfast show left on the FM band in Dublin, indeed double header breakfast shows seem also to have fallen out of favour recently, it's seems all new breakfast shows that are launched these days are threesomes

The fact that he's filling in when already having a prime slot means they probably are preparing him as a long term replacement in the future

Before he left TodayFM for 98fm he stated he wanted the breakfast slot on TodayFM and he saw 98fm as his way to get ready for it.

He has since said how he hated his time at 98fm and he always complained about the early hours on redFM breakfast.

Ok, Ed playing Primal Scream and now Wet Leg, and earlier a non-catchy mostly acoustic version of Pride from the new U2 greatest hits album. This is promising... all hope is not yet lost!

This won’t be popular here but….I enjoy listening to Dara Quilty. There I said it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,656 ✭✭✭hold my beer

I've been switching off at 12 and not going back to Today Fm without Foley.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,905 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Today FM was on when I got into the car earlier. Quilty was trying to be funny, coming out of news and sport, and it was one of the most cringe things I've heard on radio as he tried, and failed, to get Phil Egan and the newsreader to play along with him.

Where's Foley the last few weeks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,681 ✭✭✭✭flazio

He covered the Breakfast show a couple of weeks ago after that I don't know.

    This too shall pass.
