Companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook and Twitter.

So what's the next big industry to come in the World. Could it be Space or something else entirely?

I think Globalism has gone as far as it can, massive corporations are terrible at innovation and ESG will f##k them in the mid to long term, countries with a rich culture of entrepreurship will be fine, others not so much!

I've often wondered if eventually I will be replaced by an AI. Certainly the speed of advancement is unpredictable but I still don't see it. Like people were raving about chatGPT and you can get it to write some boilerplate code from scraping stack overflow or whatever. I just don't see an AI getting the full development cycle down. Gathering requirements,procurement of data and testing data, architecture and design, high performance scalable code, operations and support. Certainly I see it as a tool for each component of the dev cycle but I'm not sure it will reach a point iny lifetime where we can just ask it to produce a daily quant equity factor model and portfolio rebalance for example. Like it's hard for me to imagine humans not directing.

Globalisation has gone into reverse thanks to Trump, Xi and perhaps Covid. This will cost consumers and other a lot in the long run. Protectionism always does, as anyone with an inkling of Irish economic history should know.

I should have thought that innovation is what makes many companies grow big in the first place.

Maybe. I don't know. What's a certainty is that a lot of jobs will. The only roles I see that have any sort of long term security are people-facing roles and anything with a lot of variety. Stuff like data analytics can probably be done by AI either now or very soon.

AI is not self aware, it's suggesting the most likely text block based on prior observed billions of examples. It's using hive mind, but has no conscious awareness of what its doing.

If you ask it a question like, My name is ELM. My mother has 3 sons, two of them are ELM2 and ELM3, what is the name of the other son?, it will not be able to answer.

Where would Facebook and Twitter be without real tech producing companies like Apple, Samsung, Google.

I hate when those clowns are seen as technology companies.

At least Amazon gave a source of cheap products and AWS.

Oh and a lot of Amazon staff let go are not going to be the ones that will drive innovation, development.

Microsoft for all it's history of shyte products at least gives us products that are contributing to daily lives.

Globalisation doesn't benefit everyone.

I know it is loved by some for the very reasons you gave, Ireland did well out of it and you can cheap consumer goods because they are built at slave labour rates by some poor smucks, often kids in some far off land.

We have managed to get the major technology companies here, we have pharma and bioengineering, but it hasn't benefited the old industrial heartlands of major Western economies.

That is a major contributory factor as to why Trump actually got into power.

Oh and globalisation has been very bad for the environment - about the only thing I agree with the greens on.

AI is indeed going to replace an awful lot of processes…and people. There’s a current need for people to learn and work in developing AI, but the idea is that it will develop itself anyway through deep learning. So it will ultimately replace a lot of IT workers.

I think one of the next big industries will be Materials - battery tech, superconductors, that sort of thing.

There are a number of breakthroughs that are (maybe) just around the corner.

If you cannot trust it to relay correct information to you, then what good is it really? It will still need a human to intervene and check it's work, so it will never fully replace humans in various roles.

The human mind doesn’t quite know if it’s right or wrong, it looks for evidence, it goes down rabbit holes of conformational bias and even the most brilliant of minds need peer review. In time to come collective human mind type reasoning might be achieved by AI, but it’s a long way off. I’m seeing theoretical projects, eg in LinkedIn where brain mapping is being utilised to model future AI. All very fascinating.

However human beings are first and foremost going to be the supervisors of AI, after all we cross-check each other all the time.

People-facing roles are always going to be fundamental as we are essentially social creatures and cannot exist well without each other.

exactly - and this is with humans who are capable of critical thinking and abstract thought and whose intelligence is on a whole other level compared to ML models like GPT3

The idea that white collar jobs, or data analytics or anything else will be entirely replace by AI is delusional. Not in our lifetime. Ironically its mostly the people who dont work with ML/AI who make these broad predictions. In reality current gen "AI" is a better set of tools for speeding up a humans tasks than tools that previously existed before. They dont replace anything just as previous incarnation of stuff didnt, it saves time but the human worker is crucial in the process.

Data analytics, cyber security, front end & lots more are relying more on AI tools, so some of those “laptop tasks” are very likely to be increasingly automated. Difficult to predict what exactly it will look like in 5 years time.
