Have a work colleague based near Giants Causeway and he says they are getting buried there, he's quite concerned.

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

The wind at Donegal airport has gone a bit more to the north west and both temperature and dew point have shot up.

How many inches has accumulated up there in Donegal now?

The Northwesterly will kill it. 3c tonight hail and sleet. The back end of showers more snowy away from coasts but all gone very sleety in Northwest with the heavier precipitation mixed with wind

The vista of mountains and low clouds is breathtaking. There is snow atop and further down than a day ago and where cloud ends and snow starts is a mystery. A white merging. I will try to get photos tomorrow.

Looking at the cameras around the house near Ardagh, Longford, there is light snow falling with a temperature of 0° and it's readily sticking. House is at about 100m ASL.

Still the same as about 1pm 7/8cm. Had a graupel shower that turned to snow on the back edge within in the last 30 minutes. I’m inland probably different around the coast. Temperature just a nudge above 0c.

Met office forecast showers turning to rain along the North coast but snow continuing inland.

Back down to 3°c at 4:30pm as the wind backs more northerly

I see a polar low is forecast for parts of Scotland with heavy snow this evening. It started off so well, with the snow sticking and the showers were frequent, but since then there have been too few of them. We need an organised band of showers to come down over the country tonight.

More organised snow coming into Donegal

Unfortunately the North Coast usually covers North Mayo and Sligo too. Can see the rainy stuff to the North on netweather.

If you visit xcweather.co.uk and go to the animation tab, then up it to 12hrs for a better history, you can see that it was only this afternoon you got a breeze in off the bay bringing in marine air and rising those temperatures. The winds look set to turn northerly later though and then coming of the Donegal snowfields should lower your temperatures.

Snowing. Bit of breeze for the first time today

Snow gone off branches of trees here now, a sure sign of a slight thaw in the last two hours. Feels colder as a result of the melting

Band of rain and sleet moving down from the north, will it make it here intact or disappear just as it crosses the border and warmer uppers moving south also, probably very marginal for low level snow. The colder uppers will return tomorrow afternoon before things start to become progressively milder from Thursday.

Lived up in Blackhead, Whitehead Co Antrim in 1967/68 and remember we were totally snowed in and could not go to school for about 2 weeks! When it snows in Antrim, it really snows. Have never seen such snow since. My brother fell into a drift when we tried to walk up the cliff path from Whitehead one day.

Frost didn't leave the ground today in Dunshaughlin despite the very sunny conditions. Looking at the GFS 12z after a brief warm up over Friday and weekend high pressure really gets going over us for the remainder of January and into the start of February with plenty of frosty nights and fairly low daytime temperatures, proper inversion. If this ends up with frost and fog then maybe an ice day or 2 could be expected, despite the mild uppers.

It got milder for 1 hour but colder again and snowing heavy big flakes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 791 ✭✭✭Robwindstorm

Lovely sunny day in Meath alright Gonzo, but it's bitter cold with that breeze. I wonder will that showery band give us a flurry here? Anyone know the minimum temperature last night, I know it was -7 in castlederg at one stage and -6 at a few stations. Last night's frost penetrated the ground quite hard.

Snowing in Mallow apparently and looking at radar suddenly gone far more active in Munster. Fingers crossed here...
