-4c here in Ashbourne aswell. Give me this weather any day over the constant muck we had over the last month. Hopefully the rest of the winter won't be as wet as that and we are past the wettest spell. Well it looks like high pressure will be dominating our weather soon enough.

Great to see a proper northerly delivery snow to areas that can often miss out when we get it from the east, keep the pics coming guys much appreciated.

Kids off schools today up here in Inishowen.

Road conditions yesterday and last night on commute home were treacherous.

Don't expect today to be any easier.

    Remember to feed the birds

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

I think snow showers will become a fair bit more widespread, frequent and heavier in most of Connaught today plus all of Ulster (previously it had mainly been Ulster and "the 6 counties") plus many parts of Leinster, particularly the further west and north that you go in the province however snow is likely to stick in areas close to the coast and with an on-shore breeze and showers may turn more sleety in these areas during the day.

I expect a good covering in many of these areas during today/this evening however remember that they are showers so one person may get lucky and get several centimetres whilst a neighbour a kilometre or two away may get nothing or barely a dusting.

There is a new snow shield in place just to the North of Tuam at the moment, this may be upsetting to some regular posters.

    Nice clean road this morning.

Heavier showers coming but theyl be more of a wintry mix for Sligo still snow inland though. Can see the brown clouds changing black as daytime temperature increases ever so slightly.

I was going to actually mention that it's more likely to be a wintry mix near coastal areas with an on-shore breeze.

Nothing for Dublin or surrounding counties, Northerlies are useless for us. We need an easterly for snow. Our wait goes on into February and if that doesn't happen then March.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,692 ✭✭✭timmyntc

NW snowed under at the minute

Havent had a dusting this heavy for a few years at least

Another polar maritime event producing good accumulating snow and the radar is starting to stack up for inland areas.

3 failed 'easterlies' in a row for us I make it - if you want snow every winter, it comes from this route.

A bit disappointing that. I thought more of Connacht would be included in the warning . I still think most of Connacht will get snow, but it must mean those areas within the warning will get more

Rain and sleet in Sligo now. Dry powdery stuff from this morning being washed away. We've had our fun. Enjoy it other places

Temperature -1c dew point -2c means f all

What is the wet bulb temperature? . Its probably gone the wrong way there. Maybe by night you will see snow again.

We haven't had a successful easterly since 2018 so many parts of the country haven't seen measurable snow since March 2018. Looks like the wait for the snow starved east and much of the south is going to run on and on unless we can get extremely lucky with a perfect SSW, a proper split, downwelling and for it to all occur within February and for us to be on the cold side of the blocking with a long fetch direct hit easterly from deepest depths of central Russia. That's what it takes to get snow into Leinster most of the time. For all I know the wait could go on another 5 years.

Way way more snow than I was expecting.

At the very least its highly likely we are now past the wettest part of this winter. Which is one thing I'm thank full for, snow or no snow. The only remaining question is can we get a decent cold and snowy spell before it ends? Hopefully we can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,869 ✭✭✭✭nacho libre

Unfortunately based on current guidance it does not look like there will be a split of the PV, more likely is a displacement. We could still get a cold spell from this, but initially with the downwelling of westerlies from above we might have a zonal period to deal with first. If we could tap into the air from Siberia it would be frigid given the build up of severe cold there this winter. It would not surprise me if - 20 uppers made it to the South East of England in that scenario.

The standing water in my backyard has all turned to ice and the garden is starting to harden a bit at last and that is most welcome. Long may the dry weather continue until February 1st, then we can cross every toe and finger and pray for something to happen fast in February to deliver some cold and snow to the east.

Yellow - Snow and Ice Warning for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Derry

Snow showers will affect these areas through Tuesday afternoon and continue in many places overnight, and into Wednesday morning. Accumulations of a couple of centimetres are likely at low levels, with higher ground anywhere is the region potentially seeing 5-10 cm, and up to 15 cm for the higher ground in northern Northern Ireland

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,092 ✭✭✭.Donegal.

In work but I’d guess there’s about 8cm . Frequent heavy showers all morning.

Good to see Cork in on that warning, hopefully comes a bit further east tonight although I doubt it. I am a few kms west of the city so got a few cms yesterday afternoon but then the larger fall that gave Kerry and West Cork good falls that evening came tantalizingly close and then veered off south at the last minute and only gave light flurries here.
