Lovely day here in Leitrim blue sky's and sun. Nooooo rain, probably the first day this year it hasn't rained. The ground is saturated but managed to do a few jobs outside.

    (Rain just started) 😬

The majority of northerlies only really benefit Scotland, north-eastern England, North Wales and parts of Northern Ireland. As for us northerlies are next to useless for snow in Ireland except maybe some coastal parts of Donegal and maybe a few western fringes. A northerly needs to be very unstable with embedded polar lows to have any sort of widespread snow across the different regions of Ireland and those are even more rare than an easterly or north-easterly.

I recall many northerlies delivered for us when I was growing up. We used to get them quite regularly in February, some of the more potent ones did have polar lows, which delivered nationwide, but the others did not just have snow confined to Donegal and Western fringes. While most of the shower activity was in the West and North West, some showers made it further east and south in these situations.

Inland Donegal here and northerly’s are good for my location. You’re bit off with your analysis in that regard . I know they’re shite in Meath, I know that more than anything lol

I remember a long time ago this being the case, back when Weathercheck was a mod of the weather forum, that must be well over 15 years ago, before 2010. Since 2010 I don't think we've had a single northerly which has given much of Ireland a dusting never mind a proper fall of snow.

Yeah, that was the last great one.

We don't get decent Northerlies anymore. Back in the mid to late 80s to early 90s they were fairly common. There was also a very good one in December 2000. I think it lasted nearly a week.

For England, thought I’d post it anyway because it sounds like they’re expecting a half decent cold snap out of this- met office issued a cold weather alert this evening . Level 2 alert except for London, the south and south west which are covered with a level 1.

The Met Office says there is a 70% probability of severe cold weather, icy conditions and heavy snow.

I’m meant to be flying from Dublin on Tuesday morning, should I be worried? Had plenty of cancelled flights during the last spell did Dublin. App on phone doesn’t look too bad or yr.

At the moment I wouldn't see much need for a thread, sticking snow will probably be confined to hilly areas of Ulster, Connacht and west Munster, as winds will be between west and north most of the time during this four to five day cold spell. Even there I would expect reports of only 2-5 cm falls here and there. Also, wouldn't be surprised if there was frequent sunny spells in Leinster and east Munster, even some parts of Connacht. Passing flurries with a few flakes or sleet/hail showers in the air possibly. A dusting on top of some hills in the southeast.

The UK Met Office likely getting into the game because of a low that will miss Ireland to the south on Monday but might bring a bit of snow to London and the southeast. It looks rather weak but could give 5-10 cm on the Downs.

Without any easterly component, the only hope here for most of Ireland would be embedded troughs or meso-scale lows and that sort of action seems to be muted so far, but it could show up closer to the time. It is certainly going to be cold enough aloft for snow, in particular on Monday and Tuesday.

I think the North and West will do pretty well out of this MT. Monday and Tuesday the days to look out for. Think Sunday and Wednesday just the usually messy hail etc.

I'm expecting a white morning Tuesday and enough snow for a few messy snowball fights. Needless to say it will be all gone by lunch but we will see.

Very interesting few days coming up before it quietens down later next week.

I disagree that it will only be confined to hilly areas. I think 2-5cm for low lying areas a tad inland in the NW and N that see the showers. Basing that off history of these types of set ups, it’s nothing amazing but enough to get a snow day or two out of it.

    More bloody expense.

Temperatures have finally dropped down to 4c or 5c now. Maybe better not having a thread because there are a lot of trolls in them. We can just discuss snow here in secret!

If we can believe the GFS the weather could settle down towards the final week of January if the high to the north east can hold off the Atlantic. I would not put money on it, though.

Cooler today but nice to see bright sunny spells for local Parkrun this morning. Perfect really for that.

Slighty cooler now, rain and blustery this afternoon.

The northerly pattern looks to be much like other northerly patterns of the last few years, and that is watered down, contaminated muck. I've no doubt that snow will fall in places, even at lower levels at times and more especially by night, but the older, grouchier me really couldn't care less anymore about these scraps that the winter weather gods feel fit throw at us these days. And as OldRio suggested above, the coming weather will just add even more expense to our bills without actually having the benefit of experiencing anything monumental.
