Sorry to go off topic slightly but for a new EV owner in January who will be charging at night and doing a lot of miles am I right in thinking that EV Plan w.Energia w. day/night meter is the way to go?

Yup. The super low rates have disappeared but there is still value in that plan compared to the competition.

I'm coming to the end of my contract with BG in January and would really like to get rid of the smart meter and go D/N. I don't see any D/N price plans on the BG site at all maybe that's why they wouldn't entertain my request for the meter change. Would going to energia on a 24hr plan, changing the meter and then getting the EV plan work? Esbn have told me I can change the meter through my supplier...

How long does it take the existing supplier to swap the meter? We're with Electric Ireland at the moment but will probably be changing the meter for a D/N meter and going Energia to save €200 a year over the next best Smart meter rate I can find. Is there a valid technical/commercial reason why energy providers can't/won't provide a Smart Meter rate that matches their D/N rates?

I requested a meter swap to d/n via Energia and ESB came out to do it about a week later. Smart Tariffs just seem to be an opportunity for price gouging in an attempt to recover the €millions they’ll spend fitting smart meters that nobody wants.

    ElectricityUsage.JPG

Thought might be of interest to some

Picture of analysis of my electricity usage based on smart meter data since end of Sept

On the breakdowns n: night, e: ev rate, d: day rate, p: peak rate

As you can see most of usage is charging the EV.

For those saying smart tariffs aren't worth it, the data disagrees. I've compared it with what is generally consider the best tariff Energia ev and the cost for it is about 8% more per day, the increased standing charge on the BG plan brings it closer but overall the smart plan is still cheaper. Will be interesting to see after a full year how it looks.

Are you on the Electric Ireland Boost plan? This might be my Road to Damascus moment.

Sorry meant to put it in the post, on the Bord Gais EV smart plan

I’m with electric ireland and getting an ev car shortly, Do I call them and switch to a night rate and is it cheaper than a day one ?

I mentioned it on another thread, that I think the answer is less clear these days than it was 3 months ago when D/N tarif was always better.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's because smart tariffs have gotten cheaper - more to do with D/n plans increasing more than the rest. And if Energias d/n EV plan increases the discount to the same levels as the summer, it will be the best deal available again.

What I do know is that on D/N, there's a clear benefit for solar PV in terms of deemed export that will be around for a few years yet. But all the rest of the stuff is at the whim of the pricing teams in the electricity retailers.

so you need to do the maths.. the night boost tarrif.. gives you 20 cents rates between 11pm and 8am and 12 cents between 2am and 4am.. but its 44 cents from 8am in the morning to 11pm at night.. so unless you can move most of your usage to night time rates then you might end up spending more due to the high day rate.. if there's no one home all day etc.. you might be ok.. but consider cooking etc.. it really works out well if you have battery storage where you can bank the electricity at cheap rates and use it during the day/evening avoiding the higher rates

Yes there’s no one at home most days except cooking around 5pm…I could turn washing machine on at night too…so a night rate might suit best

BG rang me today offering me 18% off from the 18th of January (my contract ends on the 17th) giving me a renewal rate of 39.5c (24hr rate) I accepted it as I tried looking on a few sites and no supplier was anywhere near that price for new customers. If something better turns up I have 14 days from the 17th to cancel.

Just remember if you use the cooling off period you're back to BG for 20 days before you can switch to another new supplier. It's a slow process!

Is this something per customer? Recently got solar and wondering what I need to do to get deemed export.

Make sure you don't have a smart meter.

Confirm with ESBN that NC6 form has been sent into them by your installer.

could those on plans with "cheap" night rate energy capped, say 1000kw per month, submit an under reading in winter and over reading in summer to balance

    😎

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,451 ✭✭✭KCross

Not really. The meter reader will take an actual reading 4 times a year so they’ll catch up with you even if you fake a reading or two.

I have a smart meter and am with electric ireland…so does that mean I can get a night rate....is there any benefit charging at night then? What are my options for cheaper charging?

Are you electric only or dual-fuel?

I'm with EI on Home + Boost (elec only)

    8am-11pm : €0.4368 per kWh

    11pm-2am : €0.2155

    2am-4am : €0.1265

    4am-8am : €0.2155

Electric only so home boost looks like the best option, thanks

do you call them to ask them to switch to that option?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

No 5 to 7 peak rate? I find that hard to believe, that's where they really screw you. 2 hours EV rate is almost useless with an EV that has a big battery.

I did it via the phone as was trying to angle for a discount based on some issues last year - but nothing was coming. Felt the deal available was pretty good anyway - couldn't find better myself for a Smart Meter user.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,194 ✭✭✭joe1303l

If you’ve an EV, you should try and have the smart meter replaced with a standard day/night meter. Better rates then available to you.

The Day/Night offering from EI is now poorer than the Night Boost offering on a Smart Meter.

Here are the two options for Day/Night electric only.

Can't be beat as far as I can see.

9 hours of that night rate too.

    That's including VAT too.
